I once heard someone say that you can learn to sail in an afternoon but it takes a lifetime to get good at it. I’ve lived and worked on boats for over ten years now and have experienced a wide variety of situations on the water. But this week we come face to face with a boating maneuver that has instilled fear in my heart ever since I began dreaming of sailing the world. Personally I regard it as the most difficult boating maneuver that I know of and although it is quite rare throughout most of the world here in Greece where we’ve been sailing for the past couple of weeks, it is used prolifically. And our new found skills get a trial by fire when an unexpected storm descends on the Ionian Islands and the only thing keeping us off the rocks are the techniques that we just learned days before. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. We received a very nice visit (our dear friends from @OddLifeCrafting) and we are finally building and installing our first frame!! The first of many, which is bad but it's also very good! We show step by step how it goes from raw wood to frame on our bow! We hope you find it as fascinating as we do! The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the works needed were a lot more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Kate was a junior sailor in Opti's and 420's while Curtis went cruising in the Great Lakes with his family. We met while sailing in a Melges 24 regatta and have been sailing together ever since. The first time we went cruising together as a couple was on a friends borrowed J Boats J 105 in the North Channel of Lake Huron and Canada (part of the Great Loop). Those few weeks, and watching other channels like Gone With the Wynns, Sailing Uma, Project Atticus, Delos, Nahoa, and Sailing La Vagabonde, convinced us that the sailing life was for us. We bought our boat, a J Boats J/46, in 2019 after spending years searching for the perfect bluewater sailboat to sail around the world. We were interested in a catamaran and monohulls, but loved the performance cruising design of the J(it is faster than most cruising catamarans). We spent six months refitting her in Rhode Island, before selling our house and cars, quitting our jobs, and leaving land life for good to become digital nomads, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn. We have since navigated over 12,000 miles together, through storms, big waves, pandemics, and lockdowns. We sailed to Maine, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Grenada, Sint Maarten, the Azores, Canary Islands, and Brazil, on our way south to Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile to sail around Cape Horn and into the Patagonia fjords. We never intended to become influencers or start a new YouTube sailing channel, but now it is what we do. We love sharing our experience and adventures with you. We have learned to fly the drone and edit videos, trying to produce relaxing and listenable videos for you to sail away and watch at home while having coffee on Sunday mornings.

Sailing offshore with only two people onboard can be a challenging thing. When one person sleeps, the other is, in charge of the boat, completely on their own. Ideally we do 6 hours on and 6 hours off. And let me tell you this midnight to 6AM shift is not easy. But now that we’ve got a baby on board following this watch cycle is just not feasible, which means that on our 48 hour sail from Sicily to Greece, I’m going to be in charge of the boat for most of that time all on my own. And Desiree is going to have to take care of Isabella all on her own. And finally we really don’t know how Isabella is going to handle all of this. So if we’re going to sail the world as a family, we’re going to have to find a new rhythm for passage making, or else everything that we’ve worked so hard for is going to have to be put on hold.
