Sailing offshore with only two people onboard can be a challenging thing. When one person sleeps, the other is, in charge of the boat, completely on their own. Ideally we do 6 hours on and 6 hours off. And let me tell you this midnight to 6AM shift is not easy. But now that we’ve got a baby on board following this watch cycle is just not feasible, which means that on our 48 hour sail from Sicily to Greece, I’m going to be in charge of the boat for most of that time all on my own. And Desiree is going to have to take care of Isabella all on her own. And finally we really don’t know how Isabella is going to handle all of this. So if we’re going to sail the world as a family, we’re going to have to find a new rhythm for passage making, or else everything that we’ve worked so hard for is going to have to be put on hold. The most famous Bestevaer -besides Gerry Dykstra's own perhaps- is for sale! 'Tranquilo' is an aluminium Bestevaer 56, built in 2007 at our yard in Makkum. The owner sailed her single handed twice around the world and twice through the Northwest Passage. Now that he is sailing on his new KMY built custom expedition yacht, it's time to sell Tranquilo. The yacht has a classic appearance from the outside, but the interior is modern and contemporary. Her lift keel ensures entrance into smaller bays and harbours. Thanks to her water ballast and carbon rig her sailing performance is excellent with ca 180-200nM per day on average. She has been refitted extensively over the past year with a new hull paint, new antifouling, check of the hydraulics, keel and rudder, teak deck re-sanded, new rod rigging and more. Having sailed almost 150.000nM she is a proven yacht, fully outfitted and ready to go out again with her next owner.

I set out on my first test sail. After fiddling around with the engine we soon get underway. The wind was around 15kts but eventually died down to 4-8kts. The sails went up easily and got us moving right along. I also tested the tiller pilot and chartplotter that came with the boat. I think those will come in handy. My first impressions of the boat are very good. The motion feels a little more dampend than my Ranger 23 but the tiller steering still provided a nice connection to the water and a responsive feel. We sailed around for a few hours and had some drinks and snacks before heading back in. It was a pleasant surprise that everything went so smoothly. I was expecting a lot more stuff to go wrong or break. I'm looking forward to getting this boat out in some stronger conditions to see what she can really do. After the two week ocean passage to Fiji, we settle in to the little town of Savusavu. Now we’re planning to sail up and down the west coast of Michigan, during which we want to spend some time at anchor. This multi-week trip will serve as our shakedown sail for leaving our home port of Racine, saying goodbye to Lake Michigan and heading south. Our Tartan 37, though liveaboard capable, was not liveaboard ready when we bought her. The previous owners used her for summer sailing, then tucked her away for the cold months. Since buying the boat, we’ve kept her in a slip at West Shore Marine (the slip was already paid up through the season) which has proved wonderfully convenient for moving aboard and getting to know the boat. But, a sailboat in a slip is more floating apartment than anything else. We have a lot of work to do to prepare the boat for leaving the dock. In this video we start to tick off a handful items on our looooong cruising prep list. The jobs are arguably small, but hey, we have to start somewhere. Hands-only CPR It's not as hard as it looks, British Heart Foundation Vinnie Jones advert. This video has saved lives, would you know what to do if someone collapses and stops breathing. This is a great video which we show on Royal Yachting Association First Aid Coursers to spark conversation on CPR, when is hands-only appropriate and why was this video made. Hands-only CPR, also known as compression-only CPR, is a technique used to help save someone's life in the event of cardiac arrest. Unlike traditional CPR, which involves both chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing, hands-only CPR focuses solely on chest compressions. This method is easy to learn and can be performed by anyone, even those without formal CPR training. Here are the steps for performing hands-only CPR: Check for responsiveness: If you come across someone who appears to be unresponsive, call out to them and gently shake their shoulders to see if they respond. If they do not respond, call for emergency services immediately. Begin chest compressions: Place the heel of one hand on the center of the person's chest, between their nipples. Place your other hand on top of the first hand, and interlock your fingers. Position your shoulders over your hands and straighten your arms. Then, push down hard and fast, using your body weight to help you compress the chest. Compress the chest at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute. Continue compressions: Continue performing chest compressions until emergency services arrive or until the person starts breathing on their own. It's important to note that hands-only CPR should only be performed on adults and teenagers who have collapsed due to cardiac arrest. For children and infants, or in cases where the person is unconscious due to a respiratory issue, traditional CPR with rescue breathing is recommended. Hands-only CPR can help improve the person's chances of survival by keeping oxygenated blood flowing to vital organs until emergency services arrive. However, if you are trained in traditional CPR, it's recommended that you perform both chest compressions and rescue breathing.
