Quando mi hanno proposto di provare la Nuova Swift Trawler 30 a Palma di Mallorca, non ho perso tempo a decidere: ho detto si! Avevo delle aspettative abbastanza alte, visto che ritengo Bénéteau il miglior produttore di Trawler di questo segmento, oltre che un cantiere tra i più esperti. Ero molto curioso di vedere come si sarebbe comportato in mare il nuovo progetto realizzato da Pierangelo Andreani, sulla nuova carena messa a punto in cantiere. Cosa dirti se non che l'esperimento è perfettamente riuscito. La barca dà la percezione di essere una vera planante, ma poi sotto l'aspetto della stabilità sia in dislocamento che in navigazione semiplanante, sembra di essere al timone di una barca di dimensioni decisamente superiori, con le caratteristiche di stabilità tipiche di una carena dislocante. Abbiamo superato i 20 nodi di punta ma con un comfort a bordo intorno ai 12 che non ha eguali, se paragonati ad altri scafi proposti sul mercato. Una vera e propria rivoluzione. Ho la certezza che le linee morbide della matita di Andreani, sapranno soddisfare anche i palati delle persone che fino ad ora non si erano mai avvicinate ad un Trawler. L’arredamento è fresco, solare, mediterraneo. L’armatoriale è una delle migliori tra i 50 piedi, a centro scafo, con tanto spazio per il guardaroba. Ha finiture da prima della classe con tessuti di cotone ed ecopelle e mobilio in pregiato noce laccato. E’ equipaggiata con due motori Cummins turbodiesel da 8300 cc e 600 cavalli abbinati a una propulsione in linea d’asse. La potenza non è molta, ma questo non è un difetto. Vuol dire che hanno saputo come sfruttare al meglio ogni cavallo. Hanno alleggerito lo scafo con il miglior metodo di costruzione: resina vinilestere infusa sottovuoto. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. It's hard to say which one we prefer without trying both materials. So for our bathroom, we decided to try out Drywall so in the future when people ask which one is better, plywood walls or drywall, we have an answer. I had the opportunity to sit down with the legend John Kretschmer to discuss the lessons he has learned over the last 40 years logging more than 300,000 bluewater miles! in more than 60 boats (accrued during his time as a delivery skipper). Among his many sailing accomplishments is the doubling of Cape Horn in his Contessa 32 named GiGi (with is the subject of John's first book - Cape Horn To Starboard). About John from his book "Sailing to the Edge of Time": John Kretschmer is sailing's practical philosopher – as much a doer as a thinker. And that is the overarching theme of this chronicle of sailing life. Often amusing, sometimes poignant, occasionally terrifying but always inspiring, his deeply personal account is a welcome reminder of the good life waiting at sea. With hundreds of thousands of nautical miles under his keel, John's adventures have taken him several times around the world, with challenging crossings of the Atlantic and the Pacific, a narrow escape from a coup in Yemen, an unlikely deliverance from a coral reef off Belize as well as more serene, introspective passages where trade winds are blowing and stories are flowing. She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for a video is filmed over a period of at least week or so. The editing of each episode is normally done over a day. There are times however when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Our dream of sailing offshore in our wooden Ingrid ketch has come true. We sailed down the US West Coast to San Francisco Bay, with stops in Newport, Coos Bay, Eureka, and Drake's Bay. This was the first time we had Julia on the open ocean, and she handled it beautifully, safely delivering her crew under the Golden Gate Bridge. Julia is an Ingrid Ketch, designed by William Atkin and built in 1960. She is a traditional wooden boat, built of doug fir planking on oak frames. We sailed through the Atlantic Ocean from Hampton, VA in the Chesapeake to the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean on our Leopard 45 Sailing Catamaran. We had to postpone the Gulf Stream crossing by a couple of days and tucked into Beaufort / Morehead City. It was a rough sail in bad weather (for us). The Bermuda Triangle did not disappoint and kept us on our toes. Thanks to Starlink, we were able to download frequent weather reports and FaceTime with our kids which made it more bearable. The reason we hired out the job in the first place was because we wanted a custom arch that would match the lines of our boat, provide support for our solar panels and include integrated davits for our dinghy. This week I install Starlink aboard Athena. This will allow us to have a fast, stable internet connection even in the most remote anchorages. Since recording the video, we have used Starlink for a couple of weeks, and it's been nothing short of amazing. A fast and stable internet connection. We even had internet the entire way across the Bay of Biscay. It sounds like there are areas in the US that are struggling with congestion (slow speeds). We don't know what the future will bring in terms of using the RV version offshore, and there is the ominous-sounding section 5.3 in the TOS. But for right now, for us, Starlink RV is nothing short of amazing. Starlink is evolving rapidly. Since recording this video, there are now rumors that RV and Residential are disabled when moving faster than a certain speed. I don't believe the limit is known. We have not yet encountered anything like this at 7-8 kts. Starlink Terms Of Service section 5.3. "... Starlink for RV can only be used within the same continent as the registered shipping address.
