There are differing ideas out there on what time of year is best to harvest trees for lumber. In our case, winter was ideal. Due to the cold and the lack of heating in the boathouse, we aren't able to work with certain materials such as paint, epoxy, fairing and bedding compounds, etc. All of which we need now in order to fair and shape the keels in preparation to bolting them together. We therefore harvested a whole new load of trees! Event information: - 2018 Maine Boatbuilder's Show: March 23rd to 25th in Portland Maine, USA at the Portland Sports Complex (512 Warren Ave, Portland, ME 04103). Fri & Sat 10am to 6pm, Sun 10am to 4pm. We will be speaking from 2:45pm to 3:30pm right before closing. - The 8th annual Jamestown Distributors Spring Tent Sale! This one-day-only event will be held rain or shine from 8 AM to 3 PM on Saturday April 14th, at 17 Peckham Drive, Bristol RI. - Acorn to Arabella Open House and Birthday Extravaganza! Same as last year, we will be hosting an open house to show off our progress (keels should be bolted together by then!) and meet some of our fans. Plenty of good food and good people! The event will be from 12noon to 7pm on Saturday May 5th. See website for more information and address http://www.acorntoarabella.com --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Bringing Yabá from wreck to dreamy! Episode 52 In this episode, we finally install the missing piece that was holding back on so many other parts to come to life! Also, we discovered some rot on our ceiling and finally made a hatch for the bow locker. The starboard deck is ready and all the cover boards are in place! We hope you enjoy this! We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted 70ft wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the works needed were a lot more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way. Sailing in the Azores has been jam packed with incredible experiences. Hiking a volcano, swimming with sharks, repelling down waterfalls, it’s been one adrenaline rush after another, and diving into these adventures immediately after sailing across the atlantic has been a bit exhausting. This week we finally slow down a little and enjoy the more subtle aspects of living in these remote islands. But in the Azores even a low key week is pretty epic compared to our normal standard. Things go seriously wrong as we leave Staniel Cay bound for Little Farmer's Cay. Just minutes into our sail, the entire hydraulic steering system fails, leaving us drifting with no control. I tear apart the master cabin to activate the emergency tiller and get us moving again—barely. Once underway, we finally reach Little Farmer’s Cay, where we hop in the dinghy to explore one of the most unique underwater sights in the Bahamas: the sunken piano and mermaid statue at Rudder Cut Cay. Back onboard, it’s time to troubleshoot the failure and figure out how to fix the boat before we can sail again. Join us for some unexpected drama, a little underwater magic, and a lot of problem-solving on this leg of the journey. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn't have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane. However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on. In our last installment we started laminating some of the bow and stern timbers. The forefoot was one piece that ended up being a little trickier and we wanted to dedicate an entire video to it. We decided to steam and bend three of the laminations for this piece, which was pretty cool. See how we do that and why in this video. El video doblado en español. Both Randi and I have always been fond of Bob Perry's designs, and this Tayana 48 is no exception to that. This boat is beautifully designed for a couple or a small family to live aboard comfortably and sail the world. It's also designed with performance in mind for those that like to sail! At an asking price of $179,000 I believe this boat won't last long and it's proof that the dream of sailing the world on a big monohull can still be obtained affordably. It's achievable for anyone willing to put the time and effort into saving that money or is willing to sell their house and retire onto a sailboat. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Asking Price: $179,000 More Information: https://www.davidwaltersyachts.com/Sail/48-Tayana-1993/756 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Make sure you make an informed decision on your next boat with this tool: http://sailingsoulianis.com/shop/ltl-boat-buying-dashboard/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We are from South Australia and recently moved aboard our Roberts 40 yacht called Nandji. We have limited sailing experience but believe you can accomplish anything if you are passionate and dedicated to the cause. In this episode we make a make=shift halyard and sail back from the great barrier reef to Airlie beach. We were blessed with some beautiful calm seas and clear skies. Once back on land we fixed our problems and set sail for the spectacular Whitehaven beach and Hills inlet. This is the greatest distance south we have sailed and we are starting to really enjoy the long distance sailing and are becoming more comfortable with blue water sailing. Part way through the build of Arabella, we were told about a boat we should look at in Mattapoisett, MA. Although we didn't need another boat to restore we decided to go take a look and see what she had for parts. Ultimately we fell in love, she was a wreck and would have been a handful to restore but she had character and more beautiful bronze than we could have imagined. We decided that if she didn't get snatched up for a repair we would get her before she went to the scrap yard and that we did. That boat was the very first boat we have owned and we spent many a days and nights aboard (on the hard of course) dreaming about where our project would lead. She kept us going through some hard times and just like the giving tree, she has given all she could. We salvaged as much as we could from that old boat with the plan to incorporate much of her soul into Arabella. We are now at the point where we are restoring some of her knees to instal under the deck carlines to support the house top. While I work on restoring Victorias knees with a could laminations, Steve works on pulling out the deck framing so that it can get sealed and varnished before being reinstalled for good. There are also a couple announcements in this video which we would appreciate people take heed of. One about our discussion in the last video and the other to say... GO VOTE!! Scott Ouderkirk from the channel GLASS GOAT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCu02y4RfEyiHqjTCaYpeq4w Thank you all for the support! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts.
