But Fountain’s new 34 Thunder Cat, which replaces the company’s original 32-footer, was straight-up good fun. In fact, of three boats we spent time in on the Pamlico River, it was the most fun. Some of that, of course, had to do with scale. The Pamlico River presented zero challenge for the 47-foot Fountain and 38-foot Donzi, and as we expected they easily dominated the six- to 12-inch chop on the windblown waterway. For the 34-foot Fountain cat, those conditions were ideal for speed runs and handling drills. And while the ride was smooth—far smoother than what we’d experience in the company’s previous sport catamarans—we could feel the waterway a lot more than we did in the two substantial V-bottoms. Fountain powered the 34 Thunder Cat with twin Mercury Racing 450R outboard engines. With that power, Moore had no trouble running the boat to 125 mph—with a full tank of fuel—but chose not to push it any harder in the gusty crosswinds. After exploring much of Bahia de Ascension (Mexico) and the nearby remote fishing village of Punta Allen we get lost in an extensive mangrove maze that wound its way into a large lagoon. After finding our way back to Atticus we decide to move the boat to an isolated anchorage on the south east side of the bay. The anchorage turned out to be even more beautiful and remote than we had imagined, without a single soul for miles. Mangrove islands full of songbirds and the occasional surfacing of dolphins are the only noises we hear as we prepare our gear for a picturesque snorkeling expedition. This part of Ascension definitely deserves the label of a hidden paradise and we are so excited to have found it! We really can't explain this feeling...Every day is different when you live full time on a sailboat, and it's easy to forget that this is what it's all about After some of the best spinnaker sailing conditions we've had in ages, we arrive to Los Islotes, the southernmost Sea Lion rookery in the entire world. This rocky outcropping is not only incredibly beautiful, it's also home to upwards of 500 California Sea Lions. We get up close and personal with some of its curious and playful residents in the middle of mating season, so it was pretty wild to say the least! And of course little Sierra was the most impressed of all by the antics. And of after a few days of cruiser bliss, something was bound to break on board, so Brian digs into some more electrical system trouble shooting. Thanks to Just Catamarans & Windelo for having me aboard! Check them out here: https://justcatamarans.net/windelo-50 I have been following the Windelo brand via social media since they first started building more sustainable performance cruising catamarans. These boats are extremely unique because they employ the use of basalt fiber in lieu of traditional fiberglass, in their construction along with being a fully electric sailboat with a diesel generator backup. Combine that with a design built for performance, safety, and the best cockpit I've ever seen, and you get the unicorn, Windelo 50. I say fully electric because you don't ever NEED to run the diesel to do anything aboard. There's a large battery bank, 6kW of solar, and twin 20kW direct electric drive motors that provide instant power. They can also provide up to 2kW of regeneration back into the battery bank under sail. The diesel generator is there as a safety feature in the event that you NEED more power.
