Kito Sylvain's Bora Bora Moorings Services ("BBMS") took possession of all the moorings in Bora Bora two months earlier and he gladly took our money without ever checking the condition of our mooring. After it broke, it was up to us to save our sailboat, only to have him deny any responsibility and his insurance companies supported his efforts (Assurcare and Helvetia). His negligence caused us and our insurance company hundreds of thousands in damages and a half a year of disappointment. It's modern day Piracy at its best... The sailboat races to Dauphin Island Alabama was hit my a massive storm system that started in Texas and collided with a 125 entry sailboat race. In all, 40 people were rescued in this horrible sailing disaster, 8 boats lost to the sea and 6 casualties reported. Thanks to Bruce Van Sant’s book, “The Gentleman’s Guide To Passages South,” we learned how to utilize the swell bridle for rolly anchorages. As we made our way from the Exumas to Turks and Caicos, we found that many of the anchorages we went to were open bay anchorages. This meant we were exposed to the Atlantic Ocean and the swell coming in was no joke. It was darn near impossible to do the simplest of tasks, even just brushing your teeth! Nick quickly referred to Bruce’s book and bam there was the answer, the swell bridle to the rescue! It took us a couple of tries to master it but now we have it down pat. The blue hole in Belize is a 125m hole in the reef, 300m wide, in the atoll called lighthouse reef. It is a national park, but we manage to stay inside the blue hole overnight, and miraculously have it completely to ourselves. We SCUBA and free dive our way around the great blue hole, and a absolutely stunned by the energy of this place. SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged 2012 Lagoon 450 Catamaran bought in Tortola, BVI at the beginning of 2018. It has been about 1 year since we took delivery of our Seawind 1170 catamaran and boy has it been a ride. We have had WAY more warranty issues in the past year than we were ever expecting. We have been told that this is par for the course by many with new boats and our friend at Knoll Marine Services suggested that the best we can hope for is for these warranty items to be taken care of on the manufacturers dime and on our schedule. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.
