Check out Edson Steering resources: https://edsonmarine.com/captain-q/ This week we got an introduction to the sailboat from the designer/builder's very own son, Ted Hood Jr. We are taking a look at a Ted Hood-designed 1990 Little Harbor 59 for $795,000. Born as a Little Harbor 58, the hull was stretched by a foot to provide for a larger aft deck (fantail). Another amazing modification for this bluewater sailboat that came at the same time as the extension was the alteration to the keel to reduce the draft another 8" to 4'6" which is really hard to find in a bluewater sailboat this size.... not to mention it's going to sail as well as any Ted Hood designed sailboat (which is to say amazingly balanced and great for bluewater). ======= CAPT Q MERCH ===== https://www.etsy.com/shop/CaptainQYachtHunter ============== Support us ============== Like what we're doing & want to help?? This simple Halyard Shackle Knot tightens on itself creating a round end that ensures the Halyard does not get stuck in mast sheave under load. Once the halyard has been used under load it will be nearly impossible to undo the knot, the best option will be to cut the rope if you need to undo the knot. It is a great knot to use when you are not in a position to splice as it is quick and easy to tie and will not come undone Stop by our website to read more. http://bupboats.blogspot.co.uk/

We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way. Join us for an in-depth tour of the 1998 Princess V40, a fantastic option at the lower end of the price spectrum, priced at just under £100,000. In this video, we'll cover all aspects of this 40ft boat, including costs, finance, and a detailed review of its features. Full boat details: https://www.boats.co.uk/boats-for-sale/princess-v40-2918/ 00:00 - Introduction We often showcase high-end boats, but today we're featuring a more budget-friendly option, the Princess V40, priced at £99,950. We'll give you a comprehensive tour, covering the good, the bad, and the very ugly. 00:54 - Exterior Overview The Princess V40 has a stylish blue wrap, replacing the original gel coat. Despite its age, the boat retains a cool, modern look. The side decks are quite narrow, but still navigable. The platform features faux teak, which is low-maintenance and looks appealing. 02:53 - Cockpit Tour The cockpit is spacious with original upholstery that’s in excellent condition. It includes a small table, a sink, and space for an ice maker. The gas bottle storage is not the tidiest but functional. 04:40 - Helm Station The helm features a double seat with a bolster, an updated chart plotter, VHF radio, and classic 90s buttons and throttles. The wood has faded slightly but the dash is still functional and well-maintained. 07:26 - Saloon and Galley The saloon offers ample space with maple gloss woodwork. It’s equipped with a gas oven and hob, and a Fusion Radio upgrade. The interior features chintzy gold plug sockets and switches, which add a unique touch. 09:51 - Forward Cabin The forward cabin is spacious with a comfortable bed, a big TV, and access to the head. The head features a large shower and plenty of room. 12:21 - Aft Cabin The aft cabin includes a double bed and additional storage. The linings and carpet could use some updating, but overall, it’s a cozy space for guests. 12:52 - Engine Details The engine hatch houses twin CAD 44 ADCs, providing 260 horsepower each. They are turbocharged and supercharged with a good service history. A three-month warranty on the engines and drives is included. 13:21 - Cost Analysis 15:53 - Conclusion The Princess V40 is a great starter boat for families, offering good value for money and decent performance. It scores 42 out of 50 on our JB's Measure of Pleasure scale, making it a solid choice for those looking to enjoy boating without breaking the bank.

Rain, rain and more rain... that pretty much sums up this episode! After 4 long weeks in the yard with no rest days, the cracks have finally surfaced and Khiara has a bit of a meltdown. On a more positive note, Adam puts our cutlass bearing back in, we prepare for painting the decks, and our long lost luggage finally arrives and Khiara sets off on an expedition through the mangroves to go and retrieve it. Correction for the formula that I've shown: Righting Lever (GZ) = GM x Sine0 ( Angle of Heel) Righting Moment (RM) = GZ x Displacement https://youtu.be/IM4HzhwvLDE https://youtu.be/w6FBiW5hQGo https://youtu.be/qoSrvcnvXTU This animated video explains initial metacentric height, center of gravity, and buoyancy. It also shows how the ship floats and the three conditions of the ship's equilibrium. How the righting lever and righting moment were created, and how the angle of the loll formed. The metacentric height (GM) of a ship is a crucial parameter that determines its stability characteristics, particularly its resistance to rolling motions in response to external forces such as waves, wind, and cargo shifting. It is a measure of the distance between the center of gravity (G) of a ship and its metacenter (M). #stability #hydrodynamics #maritime #seafarer #seaman #bsmt #maritimestudents #seamanship

We arrived back to our boat after doing an 2 month Atlantic crossing the day before Hurricane Beryl made land fall in Grenada. It was to late to run to Trinidad for safety. This is a raw uncut video of what we experienced in Grenada. Our hearts go out to all the families that were devastated by this disaster. This is the first hurricane in 20 years to hit this low and it was extreme. So many people lost their homes, land based or floating, their businesses, and infrastructure. It truly is a gut wrenching disaster. If you have the ability to help out there are so many ways you can, whether monetary or material goods. This was a week to remember !! After a few days of preparation on the Sophisticated Lady, the arrangement of small and large things to make the boat suitable for navigation (things of everyday life as in a normal sedentary family home) and the efficient and functioning navigation tools, we were able surf the waves of the sea !! Great success 🎉🎊🎉 !!!! As always, there are some unexpected events, setbacks and inconveniences to be faced but the emotion and joy, after months and months, of being able to have the opportunity and the freedom to raise the anchor and unfold the sails is priceless! .. The wind conditions, from 17 to 20 knots, and the beautiful sea !! The sun to light up our day. Great output: sailing only for the passion of sailing without a precise destination !! This is our great spirit .. finally re-emerged after a long mandatory hibernation !! Great desire for freedom and to feel alive !!! Our lady has behaved very well !! Worthy of its name !! We really think these days have started the next season of exploration of new seas and places still unknown to us !! We have 2/3 months of work and projects to be completed .. some tools to buy to make our boat strong, safe and comfortable for traveling in the Pacific .. Our future destination! fantastic !!! More about our last Open House ever: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/visitor-welcome How could there possibly be ways to do something new while building something as ancient and simple as a wooden boat? We're sure this isn't the first time someone's used a sled to control a tool as it moves along a surface, but as far as we've read, this may be either the first time or a never-talked about/never-published way of removing material from deck beams to get reference points quickly and accurately. Typically a boatbuilder will use a batten to check fairness, remove material, check fairness, remove material, move to a different part of the deck, check fairness, remove material, go back to the spot where one just was, check fairness, remove material.... and so on, telegraphing shape, sweep, bevel and depth across a surface curved in all three dimensions, and upon which must rest straight planking stock. Here we use, primarily, a Makita 7" grinder with a gnarly 40-grit disc and two runs of what is basically deck planking facsimile. What goes into the decision about the shape of the cabin house? We reveal the thought process behind the balances that must be struck between the desire for interior space, the aspects needed for deck accommodations such as propane tanks and extra diesel and gasoline, and the needs regarding the rig and dinghy. It's a lot to hold in one's head, so Steve gets his thoughts out with KP as they think about reducing the height of the cambered cabinhouse. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur boat builder building a 38' wooden boat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat Referral: Need something TotalBoat sells? @boatfools  #sailboatforsale #sailing #worldcruiser A MIGHTY Sailboat That Does It ALL! The Nor'Sea 27 can be trailered and sailed around the WORLD. And at $28,500, Canadian Ken and I think she's a pretty great deal. Designed by the late, great, Lyle Hess, this pocket cruiser was designed to not only be trailered to destinations to be explored, it can also sail around the world. A number of them have. At least one has even ventured around Cape Horn. They are a cult classic and 450 were made by Nor'Sea Marine in Dana Point, CA. They closed their doors in 2019, but these mighty mites live on and are beloved by their owners. IOTA, this Nor'Sea 27 has had three owners and she has said from Florida to Maine and has even spent some time in fresh water up in Lake Champlain in Vermont. She has been kept in wonderful condition with her original gelcoat intact. IOTA is the aft cabin model (which we ended up loving) and has everything you need to start your sailing adventures now. She is ideal for a solo sailo, a couple, or small family. With an overall length of 31-feet (including the bowsprit), a beam of 8 feet (ideal for the trailering aspect), and a draft of only 3.5 feet, she is deal for gunkholing, coastal cruising, or going farther afield across oceans. We simply loved this versatile sailboat! [Note: two people with a boom truck can step and unstep the mast. Though with the right block and tackle it could probably be done without a boom truck!] For more information and to connect with the seller, please email Keith at: kcherklotz@gmail.com. As always, please be courteous and kind. Lastly, please remember we are NOT brokers and we have no financial interest in this sailboat. Friendships are one thing, but the bonds forged with friends on ships while crossing seas…well, those are on a whole other level.  And that is where our dear friend Kate comes in. We first met Kate and her husband Rufus in Panama. It was one of those fast forged, easy-going connections.  We snorkeled, shared sundowners and explored Panama together.  We even rang in the New Year together. Then, an opportunity came about.  Rufus and Kate were jumping ship.  They were leaving their current crew position to move up the ranks.  Kate was able to move on but Rufus still needed to finish training the new crew.  So, we invited Kate to sail from Panama to Ecuador with us while Rufus finished up the job. And well, the rest is history. It was three months of adventures, a lifetime of memories and one of the hardest “until next time” we’ve had to say. Two years of planning and construction, getting all of the details right, merged into fifteen years of cruising, primarily during the spring and summer months up in the Pacific Northwest. The owners also purchased and own the slip at Skyline marina in Anacortes – you can purchase a ready-to-go Nordhavn 62 and acquire the slip to give you a home base. Hull number 34 of 39 built, she had the benefit of seeing the selections made by predecessor hulls which dramatically improved the overall package. Wide body saloon for more interior space (with two larger windows, a nicer feel than the original three). Oval vs. round portlights. Custom fiberglass dry stack mast with antennas. File drawers with metal glides. Stern bustle which adds waterline offshore and provides a convenient dinghy dock platform with the small generator inside. Inside is gorgeous. Gloss cherry woodwork, rich and exquisite. The hallway forward connects to the engine room, owner stateroom, guest stateroom and spectacular VIP forward with an inviting island berth. Each stateroom has a convenient head and shower access. The pilothouse has a well-planned forward instrument dash, settee with table and the practical office with stool. On deck she has a centerline hydraulic crane for launching two dinghies. The upper aft deck is ideal for getting outside, out of the wind and relaxing with a mug of coffee or a glass of wine. Her machinery is dependable. Lugger main engine with dry stack exhaust, Lugger wing engine, two Northern Lights generators, ABT active fin stabilizers, hydraulic windlass and thrusters. Lifeline AGM batteries. The Nordhavn 62 design is a marvelous offshore passage maker. She provides a very safe, solid and smooth ride. Island Greeter has been well cared and always given the best service. She has spent many summers exploring the Pacific northwest and is ready to head right back out to sea. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. After a 300 mile crossing, we arrive in Weipa and take the opportunity to restock our provisions. We run through our recipe for home made bacon, put on a brew and do a little woodwork. As a bonus, you can learn: 13:00 how to coil a hose like a pearl diver; and 26:48 tie the world’s best cargo hitch. We are very grateful to our friends Emma and Leroy who made us welcome in their home and took us into their family. 🔴 LAST CHANCE – Signed Books Disappear July 24. Get the Collector’s Edition of Be The Captain™ before it’s gone → https://bethecaptain.com Ever wondered why so many modern sailboats now have dual rudders? You might think it's about safety or redundancy—but there's actually a deeper story. This video reveals the real reasons behind the widespread adoption of dual rudders on cruising sailboats. We dive into the physics of sailing, explaining how wider hull shapes—driven by racing technology and market trends—have changed sailing dynamics, causing significant steering challenges offshore. Learn how rudder ventilation, weather helm, and the interaction between your sails and hull shape impact your boat’s performance, safety, and comfort at sea. We also hear directly from respected naval architect Matteo Polli, discuss real-world offshore sailing experiences, and clarify exactly what dual rudders can—and can't—do for you offshore. If you're considering buying or sailing a dual-rudder boat, this is a must-watch before heading offshore.
