Bringing Yabá from wreck to dreamy! Episode 81 In this episode, we show how much our caulking has progressed. We build a storage step to access the salon from the swimming platform. A storm hits the shipyard. And we build a purple-heart wooden handrail for the roof of our superstructure. We hope you enjoy watching this one! Seakeeper is a computer-controlled gyroscope that eliminates up to 95% of boat roll, according to the company. Its proprietary design, inspired by aerospace technology, centers on a powerful steel flywheel that spins at high speeds in a vacuum, eliminating air friction and allowing weight, heat generation, and power consumption to be minimized. The technology works in all sea conditions, both at rest and underway. For more information on the Seakeeper 1, visit https://boattest.com/seakeeper-1. Not a BoatTEST member? Designers Roberto Biscontini and Lorenzo Argento have created a world of refinement in this 60-footer ocean-cruising yacht. With a hull length of almost 18 meters (60 ft), the Oceanis Yacht 60 has been designed with a remarkable and sophisticated silhouette that preserves its elegant design and excellent marine qualities. OPTIMUM DESIGN FOR SMOOTH SAILING The new cockpit layout provides a sense of ease and security: access to the foredeck is made simple via deep side decks. The two helm stations have been optimized so that all maneuver can be carried out without leaving the helm. Systems such as Ship Control and Seanapps provide control of all on-board systems and allow for easy maintenance. The bimini is available in 2 configurations. The rigid version has a central section that can slide forward to adjust the amount of cover in the cockpit. The crew will always be able to find the best compromise between protection and ventilation. The generous dinghy garage holds a 2.8 m jet-propelled tender. This tender is operated by an electric winch with a double wire system and guiding rollers to make it effortless to launch and raise. Learn more: https://www.beneteau.com/en-us/oceanis-yacht/oceanis-yacht-60 -- About BENETEAU -- The first BENETEAU boats sailed from the shipyards of Croix-de-Vie over 140 years ago. Since that time, the BENETEAU brand has been synonymous with quality and innovation to all those who have taken to the water – first by the fishermen who made their livelihood from the sea and then by the legions of recreational boaters around the globe. Over the years, our commitment to innovating and embracing ideas, no matter how unconventional, has been at the forefront of who we are in order to bring you the best boat possible. BENETEAU was one of the first boatbuilders many years ago to use computer-aided design (CAD) as well as lighter, stronger composite building materials. We’ve also been at the cutting edge of using greener materials and processes to do our part in protecting the incredible world which we explore. However, all this innovation doesn’t mean we’ve turned our back on tradition. One thing we’ve discovered in over a century of boatbuilding is that new-world innovations work best with old-school craftsmanship. This combination has resulted in some of the most iconic sailboats and powerboats in the world – supremely seaworthy yachts renowned for their sense of style, luxury, and comfort along with their creative use of space and new technologies. -- Philosophy -- We’re a lot like you. We love the water in all its forms – the ocean, bays, lakes, and rivers. And we love sharing the boating lifestyle with our family and friends. This love manifests itself in every BENETEAU built in any one of our many manufacturing facilities worldwide. Every BENETEAU sailboat and powerboat on the water reflects the best efforts of the finest architects, designers, and craftsmen along with the highest quality materials and the latest innovations. When you purchase a BENETEAU, you become a valued member of our BENETEAU family. For this reason, our after-sale service is second to none as evidenced by the multitude of National Marine Manufacturers CSI Awards for Excellence in Customer Service. At the core of this outstanding service is our exceptional dealer network. Every one of our authorized BENETEAU dealers will be there for you – from choosing the right yacht to the handover and beyond. Your dealer will be your able guide when it comes to maintaining your boat properly and will help you maximize the return on your investment when it comes time to step up to another BENETEAU – and it usually does! STEAM. Yup, we steam this whole wooden boat for about a week, stoking the fire each day in preparation for the torture boarding. Satchel makes progress on the 12-volt marine electrical system. We test the fresh water tanks that are fed by the watermaker, and Kyle, who is doing all things fluid-related, explains a few things about the boat plumbing. Steve talks more about the base for the main sheet traveler, which when rigged, will be where the main sail is controlled from. Scott's beautiful cherry wood grab rails give a finished look to the saloon. More holes are sawn into the deck, this time for dorade vents and anchor chain inlets from the anchor windlass. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. It's a big moment here in the Acorn to Arabella boathouse. We have been steadily working on closing up the hull and now the oak shutters are going in. After these are installed, we will only have six more planks to go. Two cedar strakes will lead up to the final black locust sheer strakes. Right now though, we are reveling in the sight of a closed up hull inside the boat. It is amazing what a difference closing that gap makes visually. Thank you to everyone watching and supporting, and to all our friends who came to help with these special installations. And of course, a big thank you to Carolyn who has worked so hard these last couple months and who we really hope to be able to get back here soon! In this episode we explain why we sailed onto anchor when coming into Fajardo PR. Hoping we found the source of the problem, we head into town to get new batteries. Which turned out to be an all day event. And in the end, we learned how not to charge lead acid batteries. Hope you learn from our mistakes. The pesky, dangerous maple that serves as an anchor for the boathouse comes down in this episode, and Steve (who has worked in the past as an arborist, and of course, felled the trees for the lumber in Arabella) goes through a couple of specifics about how to safely drop large limbs from a tree, making them do what you want them to do. Then we're back on Arabella, using joggle sticks to create a pattern for the first bulkhead, which will also be the only one to create separate interior space in the boat. This somewhat private arrangement in the forepeak calls for a door, and it's time to hit the inventory of reclaimed frame and panel mahogany pieces that were salvaged from Victoria to see if anything suits the purpose. Thanks so much for watching, hope you enjoyed this one! It's especially important to join our newsletter, we're going to be launching a few short-run, limited availability things from Arabella herself that will be offered to the newsletter subscribers first. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. This is the hardest part about sailing. Choosing to live a nomadic life on the ocean means incredible rewards but it also means saying goodbye...A LOT. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Canon 220d with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. I also use an Insta 360 and have two drones, a Magic mini2 and Mavic pro Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. The bronze floors are done! It's a great feeling complete them and be able to move on to even more tasks that get us closer to launch. Steve keeps on with fitting the main's mast step, and Alix gets to work on figuring out the reuse of Victoria's spars. You may remember from previous videos, just a couple years into the project, that Steve and Alix purchased another Atkin-designed boat, Victoria. She was in rough shape and there wasn't any interest out there to restore her. It was most likely that she was going to get stripped of her parts, which would have been parceled out to the highest bidders before she got cut up—a practical-but-sad end to a beautiful and storied boat. Instead, we brought her to Granby, MA, where we carefully dismantled her with intentions of reusing as much of her materials as possible as we build Arabella. Now comes one of the big moments in that process: her solid fir mast will likely become Arabella's mizzen (the aft, shorter mast) but first, Alix needs to strip its parts, make sure the material is sound, and then reshape it to the correct size. We hope you enjoy this week's video. Thank you so much for following our journey and for your support. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: Acorn to Arabella wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority Jamestown Distributors Referral If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg Recurring support via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Original Soundtrack available at benfundis.bandcamp.com FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

Our third feature on the Rolex Fastnet Race takes a look at some of the top (and my favourite) stories from the spectacular and gruelling 50th edition. This was a race that started with the fleet in survival mode for the first 12-24 hours. After that, things settled down...for a while....before the next front came sweeping through. By then, the big guns had finished their sandwiches after one night at sea and were heading to the finish line in Cherbourg to set a new course record. For many of the rest of the fleet that had battled through the horrendous conditions at the start there was more to come.... This was an edition of the race that will be talked about for some time to come and one that delivered plenty of stories. Here are a few of our favourites. The floorplan in the cockpit and cabin both give the impression of a boat much larger than the Sundancer’s 35’ length, while the propulsion is in harmony with the boat’s physical specifications. She has two sleeping cabins, making her suitable for two cruising couples. The dinette converts to a bed, making her able to handle a large family on overnight cruisers.

We sail from Black Point in the Exuma Island chain of the Bahamas down to Little Farmers Cay. We were able to get dock space at the Little Farmers Yacht Club. The water around the dock is absolutely beautiful although the current can rip through there which makes docking difficult. It's best to get on or off the dock with your boat at slack tide! At this point, we’re about halfway into our river journey from Lake Michigan to the Gulf of Mexico. We’ve transited several locks thus far, but no other part of the route has as many locks as Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. It’s one lock right after another on the Tenn-Tom. Some are more memorable that others, making weird squeaks and screeches we’re not used to. We transit the tallest lock on our entire route, Jamie Whitten Lock (84’), where water spews from the sides of small doors in the lock wall, unnerving us both. All in all, we get another couple hundred miles closer to saltwater by the end of this episode — with only about 400 more to go! More music by Common Jack 🎶 Hope you enjoy, Lauren & Kirk P.S. It's hard to believe that 10 months have passed since we set off from Thailand. Our journey has been full of twists and turns, and it feels like a lifetime ago. We've battled storms, overcome boat breakdowns, and endured countless sleepless nights at sea. But we've also experienced the unimaginable. From trading with fishermen off the coast of Sri Lanka, to making landfall on the barren islands of Madagascar. This year has been a life-changing experience that we'll never forget. Building a boat can seem like an incredibly daunting task. One thing that has gotten us through these years is seeing it a lot of little things that need to be done and pieces that need to go together. This episode is very much dedicated to that ideology. We make a couple more fin head bolts to lock in the grown knees we put in the boat recently. We finish and lock in the sill for the deck house and we clean up the bilge so that we can finish off one more piece of Arabella, her bronze floors! Thank you all for watching and supporting the project in all the many ways that you do. This community has really grown to be something amazing and we really appreciate you all. See you next week! And happy 150th video!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interesting in supporting/helping here are a few ways: Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg Recurring support via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Original Soundtrack available at benfundis.bandcamp.com FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

In this episode of Sailing A B Sea a spur of the moment trip gets us involved in a hotel scam in Istanbul and we realise that in a city of 15 million people there are going to be very long queues for the popular attractions. We should've read the reviews before we booked the hotel, a number of people had left scathing reviews mentioning the hotel scam and even the fake story line that was used on us when we arrived to check in. As hotel scams go it's fairly simple and we wonder how many unsuspecting people have had their holiday ruined by this. For your convenience, we’ve included Amazon links. We have a Volvo Penta md 2030 and had troubles anytime we ran it over 1700 rpms. Saltwater would mix with our freshwater cooling system, the overflow tank would fill instantly and proceed to flow into the boat. This is a diy troubleshooting process that ends in success! Then we meet a hotttt couple who recently bought a boat and they take us out for a beautiful sunset cruise.

Eva is ready, we were able to get the sail repaired and we're all provisioned up...but now it looks like Storm Bret (not brett) is on its way. Forecasted to *potentially* become a decent hurricane and we don't want anything to do with it...so we'll stay in our relatively safe harbor until mother nature says we can go for it! After two years living aboard our beloved "once abandoned" sailboat... it is time to let her go. We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). The last season has been a dream coming true… we are exploring the Brazilian coast with OUR BOAT that we called Odd.. But wait? What happened to the house? Check out our website to know more about it https://www.oddlifecrafting.com/blog We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. Go behind the scenes and see how the VOR Boatyard strip down and re-builds their fleet of multi-million dollar, carbon racing machines. Each boat has taken 6,000 man hours to refit during which time over 750 parts have been removed, serviced and refitted By the time the last boat was launched, the Lisbon Boatyard had clocked up a total 42,000 man hours, ready for another lap of the planet.
