I recently competed in my first ever official triathlon in London, entering the Super Sprint distance. The reason I chose the shorter race was because I’ve been dealing with a knee injury, so my main goal going into the event was simply to complete the race and take it easy on the run section if needed. My plan was to walk the run if the knee started complaining… But something surprising happened. The knee held up, I managed to run the entire run section without stopping, and when the results came in the outcome was far better than I expected. 🏊‍♂️ Swim 🚴‍♂️ Bike 🏃‍♂️ Run Final Result: 🥈 2nd Place Overall – Open Category 🥇 1st Place – Age Group For my first ever triathlon, I was absolutely thrilled with that result. Everything feels a little different now. The way the boat handles and lets be honest, It’s been a while since we’ve sailed... so before taking on the miles ahead, we just want time with Nandji 2 and getting a feel for it all once again. Cape Town weather isn’t something to take lightly. During summer, the high-pressure systems can bring strong relentless south east wind and 50 knots is not uncommon. Then in winter, the lows bring a South west wind and massive ground swells hammering the coastline. Day 4. A very different day from yesterday. The conditions were still good, the boat was sailing beautifully under the triple headsail setup, and honestly, everything should have felt amazing. But my body had other plans. I get affected a lot by low pressure systems, and when the pressure drops, I often get migraines. So the entire day was basically spent dealing with that. I was also just tired. Even though yesterday wasn’t physically exhausting, sailing still takes energy in a different way than life on land does. I never sleep quite as deeply out here, and I think it all just caught up with me. So today became a very slow day. Most of the time I was just lying inside on the couch with a headache, waiting for it to pass. Not exactly the dreamy sailing day you imagine when you picture crossing oceans. But honestly, I’m very grateful the weather was calm. Because it gave me the space to slow down, focus on myself, and just recover a little bit. Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail. EPISODE 337 Seven years. Over 30,000 nautical miles. We've sailed to some incredible places, and Fiji is definitely one of them. Our days have a rhythm: sail, anchor, explore, maintain the boat, edit. The flow is pretty much the same. But somehow, every single day out here is different. This week started peacefully—sailing north through Fiji's Yasawa Islands, fishing, watching thousands of flying foxes fill the sky at sunset. Then the weather turned. A cyclone had formed about 300 kilometers south of Fiji's main island, Viti Levu. We weren't in its direct path, but we were experiencing the outer bands—heavy rain and wind feeding the storm south of us. The forecast had been tracking it for days, and we positioned ourselves in a protected bay, anchored for the predicted wind direction. Except we got it wrong. The wind wasn't coming from the North like predicted—it was hitting us from the west. And that put us dangerously close to shore with not enough room if our anchor dragged. For hours, the wind kept building instead of calming. The longer we stayed, the more uncomfortable we felt. We had to make the call: pull anchor and reposition in the middle of heavy weather. This episode shows both sides of cruising during cyclone season—the peaceful rhythm and the intense moments when the forecast doesn't cooperate and you have to adapt fast. This is why we're one of the few boats still out here right now. You have to be prepared, stay alert, and trust your instincts even when the models say something different. After seven years of this life, we've learned to expect the unexpected. The rhythm stays the same, but the days never do. ⚠️ CYCLONE SEASON SAILING: We're sailing Fiji during cyclone season (November-April) when most cruisers have left. We stay vigilant, watch forecasts closely, position ourselves in protected bays, and are always ready to move if conditions change. Neste fim de semana (16 a 18 de julho), quem acompanhar o carro #88 na Porsche Cup irá notar a presença de uma logomarca tradicional no litoral paulista. É o da 48ª Semana Internacional de Vela de Ilhabela, que ocorrerá de 24 a 31 de julho. Quem levou o tradicional evento para o automobilismo foi Gustavo Farah, piloto de competição e sócio do Yacht Club de Ilhabela (YCI), que promoverá essa divulgação na terceira etapa da Porsche Cup. O carro é um 911 GT3 Cup 3.8 type 991 e integra a categoria GT3 Cup 3.8 Trophy. Nesta sexta-feira (16), os treinos livres foram abertos no palco mais tradicional do automobilismo Sul-Americano. Já no sábado (17), serão disputados o qualificatório e a primeira corrida. No domingo ocorre a última largada da etapa, com transmissão da TV. Martedì mattina ci siamo svegliati con molta calma intorno alle ore 9:30, sapendo che avremmo avuto tutta la giornata a disposizione per preparare la traversata finale per portare Zadig a Marina Sveva. Tutti i modelli meteo erano concordi nelle previsioni che suggerivano di attendere l'imminente passaggio di una perturbazione con forte vento da maestrale, così abbiamo programmato di lasciare Vis nel tardo pomeriggio e traversare l'Adriatico in notturna. Prima di salpare siamo scesi a terra per comunicare, come da prassi, alla polizia locale il nostro rientro in patria e abbiamo riempito di gasolio la tanica di rispetto, nonostante il livello di carburante indicato nel quadro di bordo segnasse ancora poco meno di metà serbatoio (capiente 200 litri). Dovevamo percorrere ancora 95 miglia e ora possiamo confermare che il consumo effettivo a motore, a 2500 giri e 6,5 nodi di velocità, è di 4 litri l'ora (o 1,65 miglia con un litro). Come stabilito, abbiamo salpato l'ancora dalla rada di Vis alle ore 17:45 circa e abbiamo deciso di circumnavigare l'isola da sud per evitarci onda ancora formata da nord ovest. Scelta azzeccata, perché abbiamo potuto aprire subito le vele e navigare prima di lasco e poi di bolina larga per circa 25 miglia con vento apparente di 15-18 nodi, toccando gli 8 nodi di velocità e con la vista su un tramonto mozzafiato. Alle ore 22:00 il vento ci ha ruotato in faccia e abbiamo rollato prima il fiocco e poco dopo la randa. Alle 23:00 abbiamo iniziato la turnazione dividendoci in due squadre da tre, alternando 2 ore di guardia a 2 ore di riposo. Ognuno di noi ha potuto imparare ad impostare e monitorare il radar di bordo, uno strumento di cui d'ora in poi sarà difficile privarsi vista la sua incredibile utilità per affrontare questo tipo di navigazioni in totale sicurezza. All'alba ci siamo ritrovati tutti insieme per vedere sorgere il sole, uno degli spettacoli più belli che la natura può offrire ad un marinaio. La traversata, anche se tutta a motore, è stata piacevole e priva di criticità, solo verso le 7 di mattina una violenta ma rapida precipitazione ci ha bagnati un po'. Siamo arrivati a destinazione alle ore 8:30 e, dopo aver fatto il pieno di gasolio abbiamo ormeggiato al posto a noi assegnato per i prossimi 3 mesi. L'equipaggio, stanco ma appagato da questa esperienza meravigliosa, si è poi prodigato per pulire la barca e lasciarla come nuova, pronta per la prossima avventura...
