Day 2. Today the trip took a completely different turn. When I left Horta, I was very locked into this mindset of: either I go to France, or I don’t leave at all. Those were the only two options in my head. But then, out here sailing, I suddenly realized something very obvious: there are islands everywhere around me. Just because I left doesn’t mean I can’t stop somewhere. And with the wind forecast dying completely, my options were basically to drift slowly in the middle of nowhere for two days… or go explore an island. The second I realized that was actually an option, something shifted in my brain. So I turned toward Terceira. And honestly, I’m so unbelievably happy that I did. Because today reminded me why I love sailing so much in the first place. Not the miles. Not the goals. Not the schedules. But the freedom of it. The fact that you can wake up one morning and decide to go somewhere else. That the ocean can suddenly open doors you weren’t planning to walk through. I think after the Atlantic crossing I got a bit stuck in “transport mode.” Just get from A to B. Keep moving. Keep progressing. And today reminded me that sailing is so much more than that. It’s arriving in places you never expected. Meeting people you would never otherwise meet. Being welcomed with open arms by a sailing club on a random island in the Atlantic. It reminded me that this lifestyle is not just about crossing oceans. It’s about what happens along the way. We lucked out! It seems the docks on the Islands are still pretty full, even after Labour Day. We expected to maybe cruise around and find nothing for the weekend, which would have kept us at the dock. I noticed that some friends were out, so I texted them and asked where they were and if there was a spot. They replied that they were on an Island, there were no extra spaces....BUT...they were leaving Saturday morning so if we got there around 10:00 am, we could swap spots! Tremendous! It was really windy and gusty by the time we left the marina on Saturday morning, but we got to Grenadier Island in plenty of time, swapped out the spots, and started to get settled. Some other friends contacted us, and we let them know that there was a free spot for their boat. So a great weekend was had with good friends! Chloe was the Star of the Show, and the weekend. She was constantly sniffing, tracking, and chasing any critter she could see. It was so much fun to see her so serious and alert as a Hunter! She caught nothing, by the way. On Sunday, heading back to the marina, we stopped into Huck's Marina for a fuel-up and pump-out. What a beautiful facility and really helpful staff! As the bad weather starts coming in, it's more important for us to take advantage of every weekend on the boat!

We call Unit 2 in the new Harken integrated ILCA kicker/boom vang system “The Twiddle”. It’s the component that lives moving up and down in the middle of the purchase system. Until now, every 12:1 or 15:1 ILCA vang system ever designed has employed a traditional double block right there. Those sheaves manage different loads and spin at very different rates. So every conventional double block tips over, the line becomes unaligned and chafes the sides. The Twiddle is a fiddle block with a designed-in 45 degree twist. The Twiddle stays aligned and erases that chafe. This has not taken very long: sailors in other Classes are grasping the Twiddle’s potential to vanquish friction and improve responsiveness in purchase systems. Good on ‘em! The Twiddle was certainly designed for the ILCA but there is no reason you can’t put one to work in halyard tension or on the cunningham or anywhere else you figure they’ll work better. The recent signing of the AC38 protocol created a flurry of news stories and speculation as to how the next Cup would play out.
