Short run of merchandise available at acorntoarabella.com today: We've got planking offcuts of various sizes, frame offcuts from that closed-up port side of the boat, rejected copper rivets, and challenge coins from @SV Seeker. (Doug's launching in a couple of weeks, hope you're following!) ***BONUS CONTENT***: Also released today—this conversation with our naval architect, sailor, and racing friend Satchel regarding interior layout. We really dig into the details, and we wanted to present it to you totally uncut. See that here: https://youtu.be/RDxneIM3M8c Carolyn is back, and shows us how to prepare oakum (hemp fiber) for this temporary, special, and particular caulking job solely in preparation for pitching the bilge. This isn't like the caulking you might have seen around and about YouTube of late. The hemp, which along with being less expensive than cotton, is also more likely to release from the cooled pitch. We want the inboard edges of the planks to come together again when they're swelled and when we're ready to pay in the real caulking, and we explain how the oakum sets us up for success. What's the pitch? Jeffery's Marine Glue No. 2, which is flexible, rubbery, and solid even at very warm temperatures. It's a combination of bitumen and rosin, and when heated it flows into and conforms to the shape of difficult-to-reach bilge spaces created by the outboard faces of the backbone and the inboard faces of the planks. It's also a very, very good wood preservative. Through all this, we also get a brief look at what Carolyn carries for caulking tools, we receive some beautiful reefing hooks from Med Chandler of Ship's Coy Forge (https://www.shipscoyforge.com/), and you meet the sweet, sweet ladybird who makes the shop her home every summer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Our sailboat has ablative antifouling and it all has to come off. We know there is damage to the boat (obviously) but what we don't know is if there is MORE damage beneath the nasty paint. Pressure washing helped, but it's time to get to work with some sanders, scrapers, paint stripper, oh and we even try an air compressor and soda blaster (lol). This video was filmed throughout the course of many many weeks between other projects! Notice the multiple wardrobe changes as well as changes to the bottom of the boat in general as we grind and fiberglass behind these scenes. Thanks for watching- With love The Evans' **************************************** *Our Boat* 2008 Beneteau 49 3 cabin 2 head 4JH4-TE Westerbeke generator Mast, sails and rig are in excellent condition and in storage Here's what we *think* we know about her past. Keep in mind we bought her at auction without ever meeting the owner! The owner was sailing along and ran aground - hard. Hard enough that the keel pivoted and pushed the aft end up into the hull. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. It has the highest rate of mouth cancer in the world, but is so addictive that people chew it all day long, and ent up losing their teeth, or worse. We have a local guide us through the process, with mixed results from the crew... Yacht: 130 CdM Flexplorer Explorer Yacht Yacht Broker: Alex Clarke // Alex@DenisonYachting.com // 954.763.3971 Specs + Photos: https://hubs.ly/Q010lkng0 This is Cantiere delle Marche’s first Flexplorer, a 39-meter explorer named Aurelia is built for adventure and has a fearless spirit. Akin to her robust exterior, the interior is just as magical and spacious. It’s usually a question of more space – a bigger beach club, a gym or a stellar master cabin. But it’s quite rare to get a new boat built primarily to carry a larger tender. Nevertheless, this is how it was for the proud owner of the first Flexplorer to emerge from the young Italian yard Cantiere delle Marche last autumn – 39 meters of elegant go-anywhere yacht. Customization has been key to the brand’s market appeal and the Flexplorer series offers alternative layout solutions without the need for radical re-engineering. There is no doubt that Aurelia is capable of ‘real’ exploring. In the CDM conference room sits a sample of the hull plating used for all its yachts. The heavy steel plate is 12mm thick – 4mm more than the standard required by Class. The extra-thick steel adds robustness but also extra weight down low in the vessel where it is most needed to enhance stability and comfort. Another prerequisite for an explorer yacht is long-range. Aurelia can cruise 5,000 nautical miles on her twin CAT C32 engines with a heavy-duty rating and a fuel capacity of 60,000 liters. Aurelia is also the first CDM yacht to be fitted with two pairs of zero-speed stabilizers. 0:00 Introduction 2:02 Swim Platform 2:48 Gym 3:23 Mechanical Space 3:48 Engine Room 5:19 Aft Deck + Tender Storage 7:46 Salon 9:11 Galley 9:40 Master Stateroom 11:04 Guest Staterooms 12:02 Upper Aft Deck 12:28 Sky Lounge 13:44 Wheel House 15:02 Foredeck 15:42 Sundeck 16:17 Outro Musicbed SyncID: MB01WW0Z27FVFPP

After hearing a rumor of a bat cave running deep under the island we decide to seek it out. We spend the afternoon searching by dinghy and finally run across a man living on the edge of the jungle with his family. It just so happens that the cave is on his families land and he's willing to guide us! He leads us through a narrow, winding jungle river followed by a muddy walk through the jungle where we find the entrance to the cave. We put on our cave gear (swim suits and headlamps) and are led through the darkness into a cave full of spiders and bats complete with a river running through it! After another 30 minutes of walking we reach the end of the cave and take a swim in a cold fresh water pool. Sierra loves it! First off, I AM going to be okay! But we unfortunately do have some lame, sad news to share about my health. Now that we finally have real answers and action plans, I'm ready to open up about it. I have a serious post-viral complication from covid called Cervical Spinal Instability -feel free to Google it, but in a VERY simplified explanation, my brain stem is getting squished, and many of my major nerves like the vagus nerve etc are being compressed. It causes all kinds of problems, as you can imagine. And it's progressive as the tendons and ligaments continue to damage and weaken. The fix is to have a spinal fusion, to fuse my skull to my top two neck vertebrae. There is an experimental stem cell procedure that we are looking into trying first. I'm very sad and frustrated about it but after getting the diagnosis, I've been able to start managing symptoms with chiropractic care and PT and I'm already feeling immensely improved. I'm hopeful that this means my body is responding well and that the alternative therapies will work to heal my body so that I won't need the surgery. We started sailing a couple of weeks ago with the help of David and Holly, who are great friends of ours. They're heaven sent no doubt and getting moving again has really lifted our spirits. Not included in the video is the news that Brett's dad has recently been diagnosed with a very aggressive form of leukemia. Things have been hard here in the Evans' household! We don't know what comes next for us but we are happy to be on the water and FILMING again. Filming is genuinely such a great thing for us, it keeps us in the moment and really encourages us to focus on the good and after such a long period of self isolation we are definitely aching to connect again. Thank you for being our reason to get up and get going again. With love, Jade @ExpeditionEvans @ExpeditionEngineering My symptoms for the curious: All these symptoms began appearing over the last year with the first showing up just after having a bad case of Covid that caused my eardrum to rupture. The symptoms progressed exponentially Shivers up the spine (very frequently) sometimes feels like electric shock Electrical or ozone-like taste when neck, back, or shoulder pops Metallic Taste in the back of my throat -Peripheral vision loss -Darkness and blurring -Ink drops appeared later -occasionally things appear distorted or curved Complete Vision loss for a few seconds upon standing - dizziness / falling Numbness of right eye and right side of face Hearing is muted in right ear + popping and crackling Car sickness!? (I’ve never had motion sickness before!!) Intense facial pain + tension on the right side. Tension pain Jaw clicks when opened Sensitivity to light Restless leg or random leg kicks Itching + Histamine Sensitivity Muscle knot at the base of the skull on the right side Unilateral Symptoms (right side) Intense nerve pain on right side of body Pain and inflammation on right side Joints feel “out of place” Time dilation / disassociation Intense pain at base of neck Migraines everywhere in head Symptoms improve when horizontal Stuck in "fight or flight" but in my body rather than emotions. My body feels stressed Clumsy fine motor skills That's all I can think of right now but that's a pretty good list of my main symptoms. Coppercoat Antifouling is the alternative to antifouling paint we applied after an extensive blister repair job renovating our old 1976 Valiant 40 Sailboat, and then choosing and applying bottom paint to prevent marine growth. We did NOT 100% follow the instructions for this Coppercoat Application, and had a few things go wrong. Will our Coppercoat application for antifouling be a total failure? Or will the Coppercoat succeed despite some changes during the application of the Coppercoat - an antifouling epoxy with copper powder in it? If it is successful, Coppercoat may relieve us of applying antifouling paint for a decade or more. We will review the following points about the application of Coppercoat in this video: 1: Why Coppercoat 2: Mistakes Applying Coppercoat 3: Complications during Coppercoat application and how we overcame them 4: Removing antifouling to Prepare surface for Coppercoat: https://youtu.be/2Myy37X4hG8 5: Blister Repair, and Applying Epoxy Resin barrier coat 6: Mixing the Coppercoat, including Adding Isopropyl Alcohol, copper powder and Coppercoat 7: Rolling on the Coppercoat (We did not spray Coppercoat) 8: Burnishing/Sanding the Coppercoat after application 9: Results from Coppercoat Application -Failure or Success? 10: Future review of Coppercoat We do hope our diy Coppercoat application will be successful, but it may just be a failure, another antifouling nightmare. Everyone we know with Coppercoat raves about it, but the negative videos we have seen go a long way to worry us about our own diy Coppercoat application...we hope our mistakes don’t prove to be a failure. Please feel free to contact us years from now if you are watching this video years after we have released it to ask us about it, and we will give you a reference to a later video, or send a personal email if we haven’t done one yet. We did the application of this Coppercoat Antifouling ourselves, with the help of some unskilled laborers off the street, as well as some semi-skilled and skilled laborers from Fleet Management at Zululand Yacht Club/Boatyard, always under the direction and supervision of Patrick Childress. Antifouling the hull of a sailboat successfully is a constant quest for us..one we may never find! We do believe we will have to continue scrubbing the bottom on a monthly basis to remove marine growth! Also, for those curious...the cost of Coppercoat. We had always thought it was a job that cost tens of thousands of dollars. Because we did it diy and hired some semi skilled laborers, it cost us under $2000 usd for everything, labor and materials...so not much more than a good quality antifouling paint. We would have tried it decades ago if we had known it has such potential for very long term protection!

After living in Key West Florida for a few months we accumulated more stuff than we needed. I feel like most people living on a boat should plan on decluttering every few months. If you have a clear understanding on how you best enjoy your boat life and value things like, FAST transit speed, QUIET and COMFORTABLE ride and LUXURY accomodation for 2 - 4 adults then this boat may be very interesting to you. If you dream of popping across to the Bahamas or down to Key West and being equiped with an ALL WEATHER platform then you should put the Wellcraft 435 on your short list. It's for that style of intimate adventure with a partner or close friends where I believe this boat is going to shine the brightest. While she's capable of the day boat function without a doubt I was left with the feeling that this really is for the man with a mission. Let me know what you think? Please enjoy. In this episode we get almost all of the tabbing done inside the boat, which connects the bulkheads to the hull. It is a huge accomplishment, and we have so much confidence in our repairs, as we plan to take this boat around the world! This series will show never before seen footage of how we straightened and strengthened a 45ft production catamaran, in order to be able to complete a circumnavigation. Located in Linton bay, in Panama, we meet our fair share of challenges trying to rebuild this boat from the bulkheads up...

Time to solve an important problem on our abandoned sailboat. After spending some months deciding what to do, how to solve the problem we finally came up with a plan; and that's what we talk about this week. If you are new here... we are a Brazilian couple that have just bought a 44ft hot galvanized steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200) and is on the mission of bringing her back to life after 22 years abandoned on the hard. Once we are done, the plan is to sail her to our home town Florianópolis so we can finish building our land base, a Tiny Shipping Container House that we are building ourselves without any prior experience. This Yacht is for Sale: https://bit.ly/40EUvN1 Become a NAUTI Member: https://bit.ly/NautiCrew Follow Us Building an Explorer Yacht @NautiGuys https://bit.ly/3yPe1Z5 Today we are checking out the new wallywhy100, and it’s honestly a game-changer. Wally took the demand for a smaller yacht and created this incredible crossover that keeps all the bold design and spacious feel of the larger models in a sleek, under-70-foot package. It’s like a sporty coupé that breaks all the usual yacht rules - it's a Spaceship! One of the coolest features is the single-level deck running from bow to stern—it’s super versatile. With its hybrid inside-outside design, the whole space can totally transform depending on what we’re in the mood for. There’s dining for six, two loungers, a bar, and a galley, and the way the sides and back doors open lets us change the vibe. We can even close off the wheelhouse and turn the cockpit into a cozy movie spot. The interior feels so open and airy. Wally’s signature style keeps everything looking sleek, but the space itself is surprisingly generous. The owner’s suite is midship and comes with smart glass that sections of the ensuite bathroom, adding lots of light and openness. There’s also a large VIP cabin and a twin cabin, both way roomier than we expected for this size. And of course, being close to the water is part of Wally’s DNA, so this boat has a massive beach area with fold-down wings. The hydraulic passerelle doubles as swim steps, and the back platform drops down to make launching and retrieving tenders or toys easy. One of our favorite spots has to be the forward cockpit—just picture us sitting there with a drink, soaking in the view. Please reach out to Wally for Pricing. Enjoy the Tour! 😜 Let me know what you guys think of this one in the comments #WallyYacht #NautiStyles #yachttour //JOIN OUR NAUTI CREW: https://www.patreon.com/NautiStyles From the start, we have decided to keep our independence & integrity, so we do not accept payments for Yacht Tours and do not "work for hire", this way we can choose and only Tour the vessels we find interesting for our audience. BoatUS Magazine's associate editor Mark Corke shows you how to tie a cleat hitch knot. This simple hitch is easy to learn and is a boating knot you should know, particularly for tying up your boat at a dock. While there are several different ways to perform this hitch, for example, wrapping the line all the way around the cleat base before starting the figure eight, the result is similar. We'll show you how to do it a few times, both at normal speed and slowed down. To start, take the working end of the line and run it around the side of the cleat farthest from where it comes in. Wrap it around the base until it's back on the same side as your boat, then cross it over the top of the horn, loop it under, come around the base, then back over the horn to finish the figure eight. Make a small loop, turn it under, stick the loop through the horn, and pull tight to set it. Finish with a neat coil or Flemish to ensure it's not a trip hazard on the dock. ⚓︎ More knot/hitch-tying videos from BoatUS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xapIxuwR8sc&list=PLSrVa8gUFaPxld204vzh0iZQgbYGs1oq4 ⚓︎ Read more about the controversial cleat hitch at https://www.boatus.com/expert-advice/expert-advice-archive/2013/february/the-common-and-controversial-cleat-hitch ⚓︎ Read about more boat knots: https://www.boatus.com/expert-advice/expert-advice-archive/2012/august/boat-knots 🚩Enjoy this video? Each time we sail in bigger seas we're getting more comfortable and feeling more in-tune with our boat. One thing we're not in-tune with is those damn fish! We seem to have no problems catching fish but landing them is a different story. It's frustrating and fun, and whether we reel them in or not we're always smiling. Prout has a proven track record of making great cruising catamarans, capable of offshore cruising. Although small, this boat is no exception and I'd still have to say her interior space is more comparable to that of a 38 or 40 foot monohull. Is this boat a worthwhile project? We think so. Sometimes, boatbuilding is all about big showy pieces coming together. But much of the time it is also working with small details. This week, we focus on some of these details that we are going to have to figure out before we move on from the prop shaft assembly that is still coming together. Joe returns to bore out the Delrin on the lathe for out prop shaft liner. While he is working on that, we test out our homemade rivets and the backing iron that Joe made for us. We also talk about another very important aspect of wooden boat building. Plugging knots. We are going to have to work with the cedar that we have and this means finding and plugging dead knots before the planks go on Arabella. Figuring out all these seemingly small details, will save us a lot of time in the long run! Special Youtube thanks this week to Stu from Dangar Marine who came out to interview us for his channel and to Kaitlin McCall from Ouroboros Armory for making our rove set and a small backing iron. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

The first time we have felt seasick in years. After sailing offshore across an ocean to get here, a quick day sail between islands should have been a walk in the park, but with 30 knots of wind kicking up a rough sea our stomachs were not too happy. The rough sail was worth it though as we tied up in the harbour of the tropical island of La Digue with it's giant tortoises and lack of cars, a gem of an island to explore. We have been sailing around the world for over 5 years after setting off from England in 2016 on board our 37ft sail boat Florence. Join us as we share the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, Sailing offshore across the Oceans and exploring remote locations with our own little tiny house.
