Thanks to Athletic Greens for sponsoring today’s video! We left our anchorage at Pipe Cay to make our way to Staniel Cay. You know what that means - swimming with pigs! We showed off our sea-built muscles to mom as we took her on a proper sailing adventure. Follow along for varying shades of ocean blue, sea-faring pigs – some cute, some intimidating, and zig-zag tacking all the way down to Georgetown! Mom is proving to be the best crew member on Expedition Evans. She knows the drill when it comes to getting ready for sailing, and even cleaned the entire galley! With mom’s help, we got ready for a short sail over to Staniel Cay. We decided to take the scenic route so we could relax and enjoy the sail through the shallow, pale turquoise waters as we made our way to the cay. The sun was low in the sky as we arrived at the cay, and although the anchorage was congested with boats, there wasn’t another soul on the beach. We endured the early evening bugs to enjoy solo time with all of the swimming pigs! They were friendly and loved munching on carrots and playing with us in the water. We couldn’t get enough of the adorable pigs so we stopped by Staniel Cay again during the day, arriving at a much more crowded beach than the day before. The water was crystal clear and we got to see sharks and a massive ray. Stopping in town for provisions proved not entirely fruitless as Jade snagged a freshly fallen mango off the ground, but all of the shops were closed. The unrelenting heat on the cay let us know it was time to start heading south to get mom to Georgetown in time for her flight home. Taking the most direct route south took us out into the Atlantic Ocean again – the 400 feet of deep blue water made a huge contrast to the 4 feet of clear water from earlier in the day. As the moon peeked out above the clouds, the misty sunset colors over the Atlantic reminded us of someplace off the coast of California. Onward through the night we sailed, until we decided to take a sleeping break at High Cay in order to let the stormy weather and harsh waves pass us by. We got up before the sun to continue our sail down south. We were eventually greeted with radiant pink and blue sunrise colors over the ocean, which then turned into a perfectly sunny sailing day. The sail to Georgetown was entirely upwind which meant zig-zag tacking the entire day. We arrived at a windy anchorage with no bugs – hooray! – and that signature bright turquoise water. There are many steps in the boat building process that some people may not know of or think about when picturing the work being done. Most see the centerline timbers going up. Then the frames, the planks, deck, spars, etc. And Boom you have a boat! However, there are so many more intricate parts that go into the process. One of those that many may not think of in wooden boats is something called stop waters. In this installment we fair up the rabbet to its final shape to accept the garboard plank, instal one more floor up in the bow and drill some holes in our timbers to instal the stop waters. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. After having stripped Victoria of her interior, we now move on to disassembling her hull by removing her cockpit, aft deck and then her rudder. Almost all of the mahogany that is being stripped from her is being saved and we will reuse as much of it as we can in Arabella's build. As for her rudder, the hardware is priceless to us. All of her rudder hardware, excluding the tiller head, will be reused. Wilson's Legacy is such a cool boat! She would be an awesome cruising trimaran for someone looking to finish the build and go sailing. Please understand that the scope of this project is massive. If you're looking to take it on be realistic in that it will take years to finish if you DIY and a ton of money. If you're looking to pay someone else to work on it, be aware it could end up costing tens, to hundreds of thousands of dollars. The biggest issue is logistics. It's really hard to find an affordable place to store a boat that's 31' wide. You're going to pay thousands and thousands in storage. The best case scenario is if you own some land on the water where she can stay moored or dry stored for free while you finish her. Once she is sailing, we are planning on taking Arabella all around the world on adventures and in all kinds of conditions. A bluewater sailboat like her needs to be tough and be able to stand up to all kinds of conditions. Atkin designed her with these considerations in mind, but there is one more element to wooden sailboats that we feel is important. This element is something that has been used a lot in the past but was also often omitted, despite evidence of its usefulness in tough conditions. This element is diagonal bronze strapping on the hull. Sailboats are very structurally stable bow to stern and starboard to port but they are not particularly stable when torsionally strained. The bronze strapping ties the frames all together along with the planking to add extra strength in this dimension. In addition, they can also act as a slight protection to the frames if a boat is ever washed up rocks.
