We have finally dismantled enough of the cabins to start grinding the bulkheads. This is by far the worst job we have done on a boat. The whole inside of the boat gets covered in fiberglass dust, as we take out kilos of fiberglass and rotten plywood. Hence the extreme sarcasm in the title! Follow along and learn how to repair common types of damage to the gel coat layer on the hull of your dinghy. Gel coat is a thin protective layer that is applied on top of the fiberglass core of the hull. You can think of it this way: if the hull is the chocolate inside of an M&M, gel coat is the candy-colored shell. Keeping the gel coat layer intact is very important to the long-term health of any sailboat. If water is allowed to creep into the fiberglass core, it can soften the material and rapidly reduce the structural integrity of the boat. We, of course, understand that all sorts of things can happen to a dinghy throughout a typical day of sailing. Dropping the transom onto the pavement is pretty much guaranteed to happen. It’s OK! It just means that learning how to repair gel coat can prove to be an essential skill and key to maximizing the lifespan of your boat. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. Sailing Solo Across the Tasman Sea : Sailing Alone Series Hello Friends, After more than a year exploring New Zealand it was time to push off across the notorious Tasman Sea. Plan A was to sail to Tasmania and explore its wild islands and coastlines before heading North after cyclone season had finished. Play B was to make landfall at Eden just above Bass Strait and Plan C was to sail to Sydney to clear in. I had been nervous about this passage for a long time as the Tasman is known to be a very dangerous bit of water. I choose my weather window wisely and pushed off on my last leg across the Great Pacific Ocean. We are preparing for cold weather sailing in Patagonia, and review the options on how to heat a boat to stay warm while we liveaboard Sv Brick House. Who would think of a wood burning stove on a boat? Our boat heater installation includes a cubic mini wood stove installation (grizzly), a solid fuel burner really, and an engine or bus heater. A wood burning stove on a boat may not be the way every sailor would choose for heating a boat, but it was right for us. We show our wood burning stove diy installation with Dickinson fittings, and what precautions we took to try to make our cubic mini wood stove installation a safe wood burning stove diy. At the end Rebecca talks about why we chose a wood stove over a diesel heater, propane heater, Refleks diesel/alcohol burner, electric heaters, or other boat heater installations, for our cold weather sailing around the world. We will stay warm & off-grid in our floating tiny home! The 4 boat heaters we feel are the best heaters for our sailboat: 1.Cubic Mini Woodstove - For heating the sailboat at anchor, when electricity and fuel is scarce we are using a wood burning stove. The cubic mini grizzly wood stove (CB-1210) nor the 810 ecofan, on top of the wood-stove, use electricity or require us to carry diesel or propane in bulk. Wood is easily found or purchased. I also have some projects in mind, one of them being a bigger bilge pump and some cables also need running. The keel bolts are looking good so I don’t think they need replacing. So far so good.

This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. So we're enjoying our morning rituals and working away editing videos, when over the radio comes a cry for help for a boat that has run aground on the reef! The message is hard to distinguish at first, and then other cruisers start coming on to relay the information... sounds like a boat has somehow went straight up on the reef in Grenada between Hog Island Anchorage and Secret Harbour where we are anchored.. the request goes out for any dinghies that can render immediate assistance, especially larger ones, so this is one time we know our Yamaha 60hp will come in very helpful! I tell Shascha to grab the dinghy tow line, which is the longest line we have that is also 3-strand so has lots of flex in it, I grab the keys and untie the dinghy and off we go! It doesn't take long to see the sailboat that has run aground, and it is right in the middle of the reef which is going to make it very difficult to reach without putting our own dinghy at risk... so the challenges begin and with all the other cruisers coming out to assist, we manage to put a good end to a day for one very distraught sailor... Thanks to all the sailors that came out to help that day, and especially to Roger from a neighbouring boat who hopped in our dinghy on our way to render assistance with lines... very much appreciated Roger!
