🦜 Dear diary… welcome back! In this episode, my humans decide it’s finally time to tackle my hull… and honestly, I’ve never looked worse! 😩 What started as “just a bit of sanding” turned into rust, bare metal, barnacles, old paint, epoxy, wire brushes and A LOT of Graham suffering. The GranOcean W-72 is a Category A offshore power catamaran, and in this conversation the people who build it explain what's underneath the finish: closed-cell foam core with vinylester resin infusion throughout, propulsion systems kept fully independent from the hotel load, an inverter bypass so you never lose navigation, and a raised bridge deck engineered to stop the slamming that keeps monohull owners away from catamarans. Filmed aboard the W-72 with the GranOcean team. QUESTIONS ANSWERED IN THIS VIDEO Why do catamarans slam, and how do you stop it? Slamming happens when waves strike the underside of the bridge deck. It creates noise, vibration through the whole boat, and drag that slows you down. The fix is bridge deck clearance: the W-72 is built with enough height that the waves pass underneath. GranOcean says this is the single biggest reason monohull owners hesitate to switch to catamarans, and it's why clearance increases as their boats get larger. How is the GranOcean W-72 built? The entire boat is composite: a closed-cell foam core sandwiched between fiberglass skins, resin-infused so the resin travels through perforations in the core and forms tiny I-beam structures throughout. That construction runs through the hull, the bulkheads, and every major component. Why vinylester resin instead of polyester? Many builders use vinylester only as a barrier coat below the waterline to resist osmosis. GranOcean uses it structurally throughout, because vinylester is significantly stronger than polyester. What happens if the electrical system fails offshore? The W-72 separates propulsion from the hotel systems and adds a bypass switch. If the inverter fails, generators can power the fridges, lights, and navigation. If the house batteries are done, engine alternators can power the navigation systems directly. The engines stay independent of everything else, so you can always get home. How fuel efficient is a power catamaran? At displacement speed, roughly 8 to 10 knots, consumption is low, and the boat runs about 30 liters per hour at 11 knots. The advantage over a trawler is optionality: cruise slowly and efficiently, or run fast when you need to outrun weather. Where are GranOcean catamarans built? Step aboard WHARF RAT, a heavily optioned 2020 Beneteau Oceanis 46.1 with hull lines by Pascal Conq of Finot-Conq and deck and interior by Nauta Design, lying at Port Annapolis Marina in Annapolis, Maryland. She is a deliberately specified East Coast boat. Her owner ordered the factory ICW-height US Spars furling mast and the shoal-draft cast iron keel together — 63' 6" of air draft against 66' 8" for the standard rig, and 5' 9" of draft — a combination that lets her run the Intracoastal Waterway under the 65-foot bridge standard and work the thin water of the Chesapeake, where most 47-footers must go outside for the trip south. She has been privately owned since new and never chartered. What sets her apart is everything added since delivery for self-sufficiency. A Spectra Newport 400C watermaker, a Victron MultiPlus inverter with Cerbo GX and nine new batteries from Fall 2024, Starlink and an IridiumGO!, 36,000 BTU of three-zone air conditioning on a Cummins Onan generator, a Viking eight-person liferaft, a Para-Tech drogue and a Fortress storm anchor mean she can leave the dock and stay gone. Pace has just got away but they are a bigger boat. We should hopefully have another couple of good days up to Muckle Flugga. Probably won't see much of the sun but that's OK."

Op enkele kilometers van het beroemde Sparta, ligt Mystras, een indrukwekkende stad tegen een berghelling. Mystras was vanaf de dertiende eeuw een belangrijk Byzantijns machtscentrum. Toen het moderne Sparta vanaf 1834 werd opgebouwd, verhuisden veel inwoners van Mystras naar de nieuwe stad. Daardoor is het klassieke Mystras nu verlaten. Doordat het tegen een berghelling ligt is het lastig te bezoeken, maar met de drone is alles goed vanuit de lucht te bekijken!

Velanidia is een klein, traditioneel dorp aan de oostkant van het schiereilan Peleponnesos. Er was een heel kleine haven waar een visserboot lag en dat was het. Dus het bestaat echt nog, rustige plekken waar je bijna alleen bent! Met de drone kun je zien hoe prachtig deze kleine haven ligt.

Day 2 and we were having a few problems with AIS and we can't seem to receive any signals, but people are seeing us. I was concerned its a problem with the connection up at the top of the mast so as it's a nice, lovely day I thought I'd send Sam up the top!
