I'm Renx and this is my first blog (or vlog!) to document my dream of buying a boat and go sailing around the world with my husband and three kids. There's a lot preparation involved and no template to follow, so I'll be vlogging everything from buying the boat and decluttering the house, to home education and off grid living. Although my two greatest loves in life are ocean sailing and my family, I'm under no delusion that combining the two will not be all plain sailing - but as with everything in life - I'm looking forward to the challenges ahead. TRANSCRIPT: So we've got some adventures planned and we want to keep a record of what we're going to do. And that's why we're vlogging it rather than blogging it, because vlogging is supposed to be the 'in' thing. OK, so our adventure that we're planning, is to go sailing with the kids. Maybe we'll go all the way around the world. Maybe we won’t. I think I remember talking about it over ten years ago, maybe fifteen years ago about doing it. So, I'm going to be doing blogs on this whole process. Some blogs on finding a boat, then maybe something on home education, because we'll be having to home school the kids - and maybe on planning the route as well - what route we might take. There's going to be some on concentrating on how you de-clutter and clear your house out. There'll be some on the kind of work that I do. Lifeboat crew - that's voluntary - so I'm sort of stand-by lifeboat crew when I'm working, doing stuff around the house. I work down the marina on yachts down there. I help out my husband on his business. Yeah, he made this whole kitchen! Kind've like team work effort on everything really. Then by three o'clock its time to go and pick the kids up. So then it's all kids then I do stuff for myself in the evening as well. So the way that we're going to pay for this trip or these travels is from renting out our house. I love travelling. I love seeing new places. I think if we're careful, we'll be able to afford it. We won't be having any bills because hopefully we'll have solar power; we'll have wind power. We won't be paying any rent, we'll be anchored out most of the time. We won't have to worry about clothes so much. So there's been a lot of preparation for this trip and it starts with trying to clear a whole house. Ebay, Gumtree car boot sales, boat jumbles. Some of it given away and some of it going into storage. Yeah, so getting the kids ready for it is another thing in itself. Getting vaccinations, medical insurance, tips on alternative medicines. Also making sure that our first-aid is up to date. Quite a few people probably think its a really bad thing to do for your children , to take them out of the security of the house and a school. You could get illnesses, you can meet pirates. On one hand it'll be really great, because we'll be with the kids all day and every day and that's a fantastic thing to do while the kids are young. But on the flip side it could be quite difficult teaching children age five, eight and eleven by then. Making sure that they're not behind all the other kids and that they're enjoying it. I do take them down to a sailing club where they're learning to sail little boats themselves which gets them into that idea. They seem quite excited. They don't seem to mind the unknown as much as adults. I think kids are quite adaptable.. Music by Really appreciate the support, check out the Patreon for more access and perks: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon If Patreon isn't your thing, I also have a Paypal.me link: paypal.me/ShelbyandSimon I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel to world. I make travel vlogs about my Vanlife, sharing vanlife ideas, vanlife tips, and travel diaries. Instagram: @Finding_Simon Snapchat: Finding_Simon Twitter: @FindingSimon Donations: paypal.me/ShelbyandSimon Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/FindingSimon Merchandise: http://simonstiles.com/finding-simon/ :::::::FAQ::::::: - How do you afford to travel constantly? A: I live in a van, which certainly cuts costs down but still I need to make some money in order to afford to continue, currently I make 90% of my income through working as a photographer/videographer. I regularly work for Airbnb as a real estate photographer and I also take on bigger commercial contracts whenever I get the chance. - How much does it cost? I spend on average $2000 travelling, most of which is gas, some repairs, food, and on average less than $200 on any eating out, shopping or extra curricular expenditures. I make $200 a month from YouTube and $400 from Patreon. The rest I make from my work. - What camera do you use? Sony A7ii, Nikon D810, Sony RX100 iii, DJI Phantom 3 Advanced, Rode Videomic with Deadcat, Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, Underwater Housing, tripods and lights. - What is your van? 1992 Dodge B350 Travelhome with the 5.9L TBI gas engine. I spent $3500 buying it and so far another $9000 in repairs upgrades and maintenance. - What're your plans? Travel forever. The Arctic this summer, Asia next winter, Sailboat the world after. I want to see this whole world, and I'm playing it all by ear. - How do you find all these cool places? To gain access to my complete research you need to hit me up on Patreon, but here's a few sites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/ https://www.campendium.com/ http://www.atlasobscura.com/ https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - What do you do for Internet? I use coffeeshops and libraries to upload episodes a few at a time, I also use my wifi antenna (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5T9lNM8Mukk&t=2s) and a data package on my phone (10GB) - How do you live in a van with a dog? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with my dog anyways, especially if it's warm out in the middle of the day. If I have to leave him inside the van I cover the front seats so he can't climb up and stare out the window and bark. I cover all the windows with reflectix panels I made for insulation, I turn my fantastic sucking air out on max (replaces all the air in the van every 90 seconds). I crack one window in a shaddy lower part of the van to create a consistent airflow. Other than that the fiberglass roof and insulation do a fantastic job of keeping the heat out. In colder climates I set the furnace on at minimum and close down all the windows same as for heat minus venting. - What happened to the girl? We decided to go seperate ways (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPgxDIXxCjY&t=4s) - Are you rich or something? definitely not. I've spent some quality time homeless, I've struggled financially most of my life, and although I'm blessed with great friends and family as well as being able bodied white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to travel the world. You need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, time with family, and often your career but it is possible. - Why don't you have 10x more subscribers? My channel isn't that old, many of the bigger channels you can compare mine to started putting out videos a couple years before I began. I could always use your help sharring my videos, spreading the word, and connecting with cross promotional opportunities. Editing and travelling tend to take up all my time.

"In this episode of Odd Life Crafting we were living our vanlifers time in New Zealand during our sabbatical time. This time we left Tauranga and visited Napier, Palmerston North, Woodville, Cape Palliser and kept driving until Wellington. The plan was to do a road trip visiting some good friends along the way." Roberta “After I finished my Civil Engineering degree in Brazil in the end of 2015 I decided that I wanted to take an extra step. So with the full support of my long time adventure partner I started a Master Degree at Sydney University and that’s how we sold most of our belongings and moved from Brazil to Australia. But 6 months later we realized that actually that was not what we were looking for. So instead of flying back straight to our country, we decided to take a few sabbatical months and travel until the end of 2016. The plan was simple, we wanted to travel to places where it is cheap and/or comfortable, and take the time to think about our own lives so we could decide what we wanted to do from 2017 and on. That’s the story we tell in this first season of Odd Life Crafting” Duca WEEKLY EPISODES EVERY FRIDAY!! We hope to inspire other people to go out and live their dreams. Our sailing north in the Caribbean has now taken us to SXM, Saint Martin/Sint Maarten. This is the island with two countries in a very small area and it's also the island with a VERY cool airport! We met so many nice people during our time in SXM and we also got to do some boat maintenance on our lazy bag and on the reef winch. Welcome to Episode 18! This week we're all about working hard and playing hard. In Turks and Caicos we have a code zero sail to repair (remember last week? Yeah...) and a spinnaker halyard to mouse, which means a trip up the mast. The good news is the views make it almost worthwhile. After taking advantage of the marina's resort facilities (pina colada by the pool anyone?) we head to Mayaguana in the Bahamas and manage to continue our streak of fishing fails despite birds and fish EVERYWHERE. After negotiating an unchartered reef entrance (welcome to the Bahamas!) we settle down and enjoy the crystal clear water. We're so close to getting in the water, and yet still so far. It's been a hectic time for us as we try to finish all the last projects before splashing. With our centerboard dropped we had the well soda blasted (even though I accidentally say sandblasted about 5 times), which gives Matt and I the opportunity to get fresh coats of aluminum primer and barrier paint into the centerboard well. A much harder job for Matt than for me. With the Awl Grip applied it was time to go back and reapply our Kiwi Grip non skid that had initially been applied in October, but sanded down for reapplication. I taped off the cabin top and combing, and we spent one morning getting a nice new coat on half the boat. Matt gets working in the anchor locker to have a nice clean area for our chain to drop in so we don't have metal sitting on metal, and I have a little whine session about how our decals came back wrong. All in all though, things are getting done and we're moving closer to the water every day! Cheers from the work yard! Thank you SO MUCH to our Patrons. E21 Weekly Blog of our Narrowboat Travels I met a few of the neighbours at Northampton Marina. One great guy helped me out by fixing my dodgy power lead so I could plug into the mains again. I was interviewed by the lovely Lisa from YouTube Channel 'A Life Full of Meaning' and she kindly showed me around the meaningful places in Northampton. Plenty of parcel collections and testing out the different parcel services of Doddle and Amazon. I attended a Castles and Roses weekend art workshop at the Stoke Bruerne Museum and bought a tin of useful painty items from my class. This included three special brushes for use with the traditional Roses and Castles painting techniques. I also purchased folk art paints online. So a very painty week! I'll be practising the techniques which I learnt from the course and playing with all of my new yummy paints. Thanks for watching.

Before we sail to Cinque Terre we wait for the sun to return and the effects of stronger winds further to the south to diminish. Rainy day in the town next to Portofino, but as always plenty to see and do.

I cover two topics: First using prop walk to turn a sailboat in place which is very useful when going down a dead end narrow channel. Second, I show how to motor backward into a slip.
