We have a deadline to get to Crete and have no option but to sail through this storm. Our safety gear is all out and explained and we also manage to fix some major rig issues. Crete is a stunning island with beautiful food and wine (something many of the Greek islands in our opinion are lacking). In this video I design and build a portable lifting hardstand for my RL28 trailer sailer. Based around 4 high lift jacks, it uses 2 x 3m "H" beams commonly used in landscape retaining walls for lifting beams. Stands provide a guide for these beams and stability for the boat. The system can lift to a maximum of 1.2m off the ground and can lower within 200mm of the ground. The beams have a failure load of 2200kg with weight at the centre when lifting at their ends giving more than 100% safety factor with a load of around 600 to 1000kg per beam. High lift jacks are rated to 3000kg with a load on each of 300 to 500kg giving a more than 300% safety factor. Old high tensile u bolts were used as movable safety pins during lifting and lowering in case of lifting mechanism failure. The stands stood rock solid with the 1400kg boat at 1.2m in the air during a 40 knot blow. At $1150 to build they cost a bit but paid for themselves during a 4 week maintenance on the boat with the convenience of not having to travel to a boat yard each day to work on the boat. Even though designed for the RL28, the system would be easily adaptable to many trailer sailers by using different hull support blocks to suit the hull shape. We made our way over to Nassau and got a slip at the Yacht Haven Marina where we met up with Randall's good friend Matt and his wife Linn. They were able to fly in to visit us and will be living aboard Turtle with us for the next 5 days! We are used to living in a small space with all of our stuff, but we aren't exactly sure what it will be like having an additional 2 adults and all of their stuff onboard as well. We just hope that they are as comfortable as possible and that they will enjoy their stay with us here in The Bahamas. After dropping their bags on Turtle and giving them a quick look at our boat, we walked a short distance to Solomon's Fresh Market, so we could buy fresh vegetable and food for our friends for the next 5 days. It has been 7 weeks since we have been to a real grocery store, so as you can imagine, we are looking forward to getting some new meal ideas and stocking up on some food items that we wish we had more of. We noticed while at the store that a majority of the products available to buy are about twice as much the price as it would be back home in the U.S. but also just a little bit cheaper than we found while in the Exumas. Upon checking out we thought it would be fun to take turns guessing how much the total cost of our groceries would come to. Linn guessed $185, Matt guessed $210, Randall guessed $200, Kenzie guessed $250, and the checker guessed no more than $280. We were scared and shocked when the total came to $22,033.93! The checker quickly realized that a product was entered in wrong and after fixing the mistake, brought the price back down to $231.52! WHEW! That was enough to bring our heart rates up! This happened a second time with the total coming to $17,698.71, but we weren't as scared this time around, because we figured the same mistake happened again. After fixing the mistake and getting all of the groceries scanned our grand total came to $245.68! Kenzie was within $4. We are glad that we won't need to sell the boat after that shopping experience. Haha We are stoked to have our friends with us here in The Bahamas and we are looking forward to the many adventures that we will have together! I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

We Dinghy through the most brilliantly colored waters we have ever seen to get to Compass Cay Marina. We hike 2 miles across the island to Rachel’s Bubble Bath and enjoy that before heading back to swim with some more nurse sharks! Their bodies feel soft but textured. It’s hard to explain. As if the day wasn’t full enough already, we then head for the rocky Dundas Caves which blow us out of the water. (Excuse the pun). They are absolutely stunning and make for some great photography! Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** Starry Horizons needed a bit of TLC so we headed up to The Boat Works in Coomera for a spa day/weeks. Tops on the to-do list was a mini electrical refit to replace our AGM batteries with Lithium. This was a complicated project that was beyond our comfort level so we brought in a few experts. Jack from Outback Marine supplied the lithium batteries, BMS, distribution control panel, Victron Solar Controllers and a more powerful Victron inverter/charger while Jim from Odyssey Electrical supplied new Balmar alternators and wired in the whole system. While the battery replacement work was going on, we managed to complete a few projects of our own. We pickled watermaker, re-sealed the windows in the hulls, troubleshooted a pesky water leak, serviced our davits, re-galvanized our anchor chain, repainted the anchor locker AND serviced the winches. Whew!! It makes me tired again just writing all that out! Once all that was completed, Starry Horizons got hauled out of the water so we could store her on the hard while we went and did a six week tour of Australia. Thanks for watching! We have snuck into Raroia to avoid the westerly blowing and end up having a rather rough night. We wake up about 1am to realise we have dragged anchor and according to our navigation system, are sitting on top of the reef! We know we are not actually beached as we are flung side-to-side by the mother natures fierce breath. We move to another spot and head back to a very light sleep… In the morning out dinghy is nowhere to be seen. The line had been cut by the propellor during the night when we had shifted and we had no idea. Luckily for us the beaches are directly downwind, so we take our trusty patchy paddleboard ashore and hunt along the coastline for Roger. We find him at a local pearl farm a kilometer down from the village and a lovely man had bought him off the reef and onto the beach for us. So we were soooo fortunate that everything was safe and sound - boat and dinghy! How different that outcome could have been… Once the wind and rain have petered off a bit, we head ashore to get some incredibly slow internet, and meet some fabulous characters on the way. A young local family takes us in, shows us their athletic prowess, and gift us with some beautiful pearls. We aim to leave as soon as the wind tuns back to the SE, but regrettably look back on this village and this family that we should of stayed for a lot longer than we did. Our next and original destination is Kauehi, and we are not disappointed by its preceeding reputation. A gorgeous anchorage that we have all to ourselves. We cruise the inner reef finding sheltered spots to relax, kitesurf and explore. It is also a great place to spend Adams birthday.
