This week Deb had been scheming and planning and set up a surprise birthday party for me for my 50th Birthday. Sadly I said to her, I have to Travel on Sunday and I could tell by the look on her face that it messed something up. She told me what it was and I moved my appointments. She rented a big ole fish camp for our family and friends. She had my daughter, grandkids, Mom and Partner, My Dad, Siter, Brother and familes along with our good friends T & O'day and Kenny and Jamie. It was an AWESOME time. I couldn't believe the arranged the flights, the place, the meals, the Charter Boats, and all without me knowing. Located right on the Sungai Kinabatangan, Sabah's longest river. The Borneo Natural Bilit Sukau Resort has very nice accommodation built with native materials. The bungalows have A/C, fan and beds with baldaquins. Nice traditional style but clean and spacious. Rooms with personality! Activities are river tours: late afternoon river cruise to spot many types of birds, proboscis monkeys, macaques, and perhaps crocodiles and pygmy elephants. After this 2h1/2 hour trip you come back at the resort for a buffet dinner followed by a night walk around the property to see some animals sleeping like insects and birds. After a great night of sleep, you can participate to a 6am river tour, giving you more chance to see the wild animals clinging to the jungle bordering the river. Road Trip to the National parks! This is Melissa's first trip to the Gateway Arch and Nic's fourth, but both of our first times going to the top. From the top of the arch to the East you see the Mississippi River and Illinois. This was also where the United States ended up until The Louisiana Purchase in 1803. From the West the view is of St. Louis including the ballpark, the old court house, and various downtown buildings. Construction began on the Arch in 1963 and was completed in 1965. The workers took no days off and it was anticipated that 13 casualties would occur from the difficult nature of the construction and thankfully they all survived St Louis is a beautiful, clean city with sprawling parks and outdoor spaces. So every year we take a couple of weeks off work/school and go sailing, as a family, up the east coast of England. There’s two types of sailors- those that have run aground and those that lie about it!! We set out to find our friend Torpedinho’s place, which is located up a shallow river, only to find the entrance a maze of shallow sand banks. The GPS coordinates are a little off and we run smack into a sandbank trying to cross the river bar. To make matters worse Delos is being smashed by a running swell beam on, and bashing her keel so hard the entire boat shutters with every impact. It takes some quick thinking but we are able to use the bow thruster and engine thrust to pivot her bow into the swell, and eventually back to deeper water. The backbone is bolted together! We finally have some timbers bolted together and what a great feeling. It has been a long journey up to this point, with a lot more to come, but we can finally start seeing some of Arabella's shape coming together. We had to make our own fin head bolts which was quite the learning experience. This project is all about finding different ways around tough situations. We needed a good way to bolt the stem together with a bolt that had a low profile head. As buying them was a bit more expensive than we liked, we figured we could figure out how to make our own. Now that the backbone in together, we are working on setting up the molds and the rib bands to be ready to steam in the frames. That day is coming right up. The weekend of September 22nd and 23rd. We will be working all day and invite you to come by and watch the frames go in. We explore Kodiak city and some of the surroundings before setting sail north. Our next destination in Alaska is Afognak Island, one of the islands in the Kodiak archipelago. You can really say that the anchorage lived up to all the expectations we’ve had for Alaska. This is why we sailed up here! We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.
