Just a little. I have loved sailing lasers (fast dinghies, kinda) and used to sail my friend's 26 footer when I was single, and spent a week, once, cruising (with skipper) islands near Corfu. But, in fact, I must learn to sail and in particular sail Wahine! 2. How long will the crossing take? 2-3 months 3. When are you leaving? At the latest, May 2024. But, it could be a year or two earlier if all goes well in my training and the upgrades to the boat. 4. Are you Crazy? *This question comes in a variety of forms which have included, "Why not run a marathon?", "Do you have a death wish?", etc. I don`t think so ... 5. How big is your boat? 40 feet. A certified for Blue Water Gibsea 402 (1988). 6. What if your engine fails? I sail. Actually, I am thinking of converting from diesel to electric motor. Looking into that now. 7. Why solo? Hmmmmm ... good question ... just something compelling about being on my own in the middle of the ocean (Nemo North) contemplating the expanse above, the depths below, and inevitably the mysteries within. 8. Can you swim? Yep, but I hope I won't have to. 9. Will you fish? It would be silly not to have a hook and line in the water. But, to be honest, I do not expect to catch anything during the entire crossing! 10. What does Kande think? *Kande is my wife. and this is probably the most-asked question. Ask her! In this episode of our cruising life we show you how we switched Vela Nautica to Lithium power and integrated a lithium batterie in the ships energie system. This giant change is part of the extensive refit we spend our Vela Nautica to get her ready for more adventures. The change to Lithium power is an archievement that improved the comfort, living on this boat, for 100%. We choose the thorny way and did not use the overpriced "drop in" batteries, that are offered for boats. We build one huge batterie with 14.4 kWh controlled by an PowerBMS controller. This controller is accesible by WiFi and shows all batterie data and alarm systems. In this episode we sail to the Dominican Republic's south coast from the little island of il e Vache, Haiti. What is it like to sail the south coast of Dominican Republic? The mountains! Much different than what we know of the flat Bahamas. We overshoot our original destination of Bay of Eagles and ended up in Pedernales DR. You can't check into the country there, as there are no customs nearby. but we were visited by officials to make sure we weren't smuggling in goods. We were able to catch up on editing and repairing our genoa to sail on through the way to the rest of Dominican Republic. The corner before the bay islands is renown pirate territory, and extreme caution must be taken when sailing in these waters. Hi everybody—here we go! Happy Together is ready for her first cruise and living so close to the Bahamas this was a no brainer. We set sail for Bimini across the Gulf Stream and then visited some of the other islands before arriving in the Exuma‘s. The boat performed beautifully and our time in the Bahamas was sentimental because Lennie and I have spent so much time there over the years. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. Deixamos Vitória, em uma manhã muito, muito, muito, muito fria! Claro, só subimos com as frentes frias vindas do Polo Norte. E tem que ser uma bem forte para vencer a geografia da costa brasileira e não virar para o mar na altura de Vitória. Ficamos acompanhando a intensidade das frentes por 20 dias até identificarmos uma que sabíamos que chegaria com força para nos levar a Abrolhos. A saída, apesar de fria, foi linda, uma chuvinha pintou um arco-íris no céu cinza, foi muito linda! Depois o sol se fez presente fazendo com que nossa flotilha navegasse no mar azul e com um céu dourado... foi quase uma poesia visual.
