Sailing with no MAST or rigging in New Zealand The Day the Mast Came Down! This week we are in the Bay of Islands preparing DT to head offshore to Fiji and beyond. We have an annual rig check done by Rob at Northland Spars and Rigging and he identifies a couple of major issues! Unfortunately , the only way to fix them is to take the mast down ! Not cheap or quick, but along with the sails and the engines, the mast and rigging is one of the most critical components on a sail boat. Making sure it is in tip top condition is crucial . So we bite the bullet, hand over wads of cash and take the mast down. Another vital ( and expensive) system onboard is our house battery bank. We have a major issue when one of our Victron MPPT solar controllers goes haywire and fries our less than two year old batteries. Not our best week . Especially when Victron deny any responsibility for subsequent damages and refuse to help out with new batteries.... After our first good night’s sleep and a lull in the blustery weather, we dingy over to Big Mama’s, a lovely yacht club on the motu just off the main island of Nuka’alofa, for our first draft beer in absolutely ages! We head across the bay in Peanut, to the ‘mainland’ and have a poke around the town of Nuka’alofa and manage to find a couple of bakeries and a wonderful market full of Tongan arts and crafts and loads and loads of fresh produce. Sailing to Puerto Rico In this episode we sail out of Dominican Republic and head straight to Puerto Rico. in the process we sadly lose our dinghy motor overboard. Most of the time we have sargassum all over the place, making fishing difficult. But we try to fish as much as possible. We don’t catch much fish but when we do, we catch wahoo. A documentary about an abandoned German town in Namibia. After diamonds were discovered in German South West Africa in 1908, the diamond rush began. Just in 50 years the town was built, flourished and died. Soak up the atmosphere of Kolmanskop and think about the people who used to live and work here. Try to imagine what it must have been like when children ran and played in this monster sandpit, when women in long dresses enjoyed a show in the theatre or local workers dreamt of keeping just one or two diamonds for themselves, when people laughed and cried and made a life here. In the film: It’s the first day of winter in Namibia, June 1. The temperature is about 10 degrees. We are leaving the boat in Luderitz Bay in a heavy fog. Ghost town in fog, what could be more spectacular. After few hours the fog cleared and we enjoyed exploring Kolmanskuppe. Sand is everywhere, silting through windows and doors. The Mother Nature took back everything what was hers. Wir verlassen unseren Katamaran, der in Walfishbay liegt und fahren durch dichten Nebel nach Kolmanskop. Der Taxifahrer ist dicht eingemummt. Es ist saukalt. Wir erreichen die Geisterstadt in dichtem Nebel. Was fuer eine gruselige Atmosphäre, ideal zum Filmen von zauberhaften Bildern. Nach einigen Stunden lichtet sich der Nebel, wir bekommen einen sonnigen Blick auf die Geisterstadt, die schon halb vom Wüstensand verschluckt ist. Sand ueberall, er kriecht durch Türen und Fenster, bedeckt die Böden. Die Natur hat sich zurückgeholt, was ihr gehört. Voici le septième volet d'une modeste présentation de nos 50 jours consécutifs passés à naviguer sur le Lac Champlain en 2019. Nous répétons le même scénario depuis plusieurs années, mais nous n'avions jamais pris le temps de documenter et surtout, de présenter notre expérience. Nous naviguons à 4 (2 adultes, 2 enfants en bas âge) sur un Hunter 30 Cherubini 1980 que nous avons remis à notre goût ces dernières années. Nous tenons habituellement de 8 à 9 jours avec notre réservoir d'eau et le réservoir d'eaux noires. Cette année, nous avons hissé les voiles chaque jour pour lesquels nous avons navigué. Nous avons parcouru une distance totale de 610 miles nautiques sur le fond et consommé 32 litres de diesel en 7 semaines. la plus grande distance parcourue sur le fond fut de 35,2 miles nautiques en près de 7 hrs 30. Il n'y a eu qu'une seule journée entière de pluie... notre vitesse de croisière se situe aux alentours de 5 noeuds. Nous espérons inspirer ceux qui doutent du plaisir que l'on peut avoir à naviguer sur le Lac Champlain avec une jeune famille et partager quelques'uns de nos mouillages et des quelques moments de bonheurs passés sur l'eau. A Tribute to Snorkeling in the Caribbean! This video is dedicated to Mie’s mom. We took her snorkeling for the first time in her life when she visited us Spring 2019 in the Caribbean. But she couldn’t really adjust to the snorkel and mask, so she didn’t see much of the beauty of what is in the ocean and with this video we would like to show her that. Sadly coral reefs are threatened all over the world and particularly so in the Caribbean. In fact, only about one-sixth of the original coral cover is left in the Caribbean and all coral reefs in the Caribbean may disappear in the next 20 years. So maybe video likes this will be the only way to experience the beauty of coral reefs in the future? 😢 All footage in this video is shot while snorkeling, hence no SCUBA while making this video. Unfortunately, our underwater camera leaked while we were in the British Virgin Islands, so this video is also a little tribute to our Garmin Virb Ultra 30 camera.
