Balmain (Henry Larkings, Tom Grimes and Fynn Sprott) won Race 3 of the Australian 18 Footers League’s Club Championship on Sydney Harbour today, but it was Sixt, crewed by Jacob Marks, Alex Marinelli and Matt Doyle which won the 2025 SIXT Spring Championship, and Yandoo Trophy. The Balmain combined great crew work with excellent tactics in the testing, tricky and light ENE breeze to take the line honours associated with the Club Championship by 58s from the young rookie Rag & Famish Hotel crew of Ben Crafoord, Ryan Ewings and Max Nearn, with Smeg (Ash Rooklyn, Niall Morrow and Finn Rodowicz a further 23s back in third place. Major event of the day’s racing, however, was Race 6 (the last race) of the SIXT Spring Championship, a handicap held in conjunction with the scratch race. While Smeg won Race 6 from Fisher & Paykel (Brett Van Munster, Tom Quigley and Logan Radford), the overall Spring Championship victory, and $6,000 prizemoney, went to the Sixt team which finished on 22 points after finishing in 7th place today. Runner-up, and winner of $1,200 prizemoney, went to Club Marine (Emma Rankin, Jed Cruikshank and Brandon Buyink) on 26 points, while third place, and prizemoney of $600, was won by Rag & Famish Hotel on 32 points. This week, American Sailor co-host Whitney Kent sits down with US Sailing colleague and friend Betsy Alison. Betsy has worked at US Sailing for nearly two decades, currently leading the Adult Sailing department. She is a five time Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year winner and has dominated an array of different boat classes throughout her professional career. Betsy coached the most successful Paralympic sailing team of all time. In an ironic turn of events for the Hall of Fame racer, Betsy became a para athlete in 2022 after a battle with cancer. Shortly after her recovery, she was standing on top of the podium in the Netherlands at the 2023 Sailing World Championships with a gold medal around her neck.

This was one of the most incredible whale encounters we’ve ever experienced. While floating in our dinghy near Minerva Reef, a curious juvenile humpback whale swam right up to us — completely unannounced — giving us the closest pass we’ve ever had from a wild whale. I had my Sony camera ready for breaching shots (without the underwater housing!), so I captured the moment from above while Rich grabbed the GoPro for underwater footage. I combined both angles to create this unforgettable clip — the whale gliding past the dinghy, the powerful tail swish, and the crystal-clear underwater view. What makes this encounter even more amazing is that this is the same young whale we swam with later that day. He followed our boat, hung out at the stern, and waited while we geared up to get in the water one at a time. Two other whales stayed deeper in the background, but this little explorer wanted to interact. Fun fact: Juvenile humpback whales are known for being curious and playful. They often approach boats to investigate and can rotate their massive pectoral fins like wings to maneuver gently around humans. This day was easily the best part of our whole season — a rare, magical connection with a wild animal. A beautiful sailing passage with Rubicon3. Departing Vigo, Spain and stopping at Baiona, Spain before sailing offshore to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. A total of 1100 nautical miles. We were in S/Y Bluejay, a 60 ft Clipper Yacht, and were a crew of 12, including our amazing skipper and first mate. A first proper ocean passage for me and I loved it. All weathers from flat calm to gale force 9. Our fantastic crew worked so well together; sailing, cooking, cleaning, navigating, enjoying music, poetry and conversation. Lots of fun and laughs and wonderful memories. This was a RYA Yachtmaster Ocean qualifying passage and those trying to achieve this were navigating through celestial navigation [sextant] and dead reckoning. Thanks for watching. 😊

The ARC is the original transocean rally for cruising yachts. Around 150 boats set sail every year in November, sailing from Las Palmas on the island of Gran Canaria to Rodney Bay on Saint Lucia. The rally attracts people of all ages and nationalities, sailing monohulls, multihulls and even motor boats from 27 feet to 100 feet (8.23m-32m). Over 8,000 boats have sailed with us to the Caribbean since the first ARC in 1986. The 2,700NM Atlantic crossing takes around 18-21 days for the average yacht. The record is 8 days and six hours, set by the maxi Rambler 88 (USA) in 2016. J'ai voulu vous partager leur projet qui est porteur de valeurs qui me parle beaucoup. À la voile, nous avons la possibilité d'accéder à des lieux isolés et de transporter du matériel en amoindrissant grandement notre impact écologique comparé aux avions et cargo. Quoi de mieux que de le faire pour une cause qui fait sens ? Le cyclone Melissa a été vraiment dévastateur... Nous espérons que ce projet puisse apporter quelque chose de positif à la suite de cet événement tragique. La Baleine Blanche ne pourra pas suivre la flottille qui quittera le Guatemala en décembre vers la Jamaique car nous sommes encore en préparation. Avec un peu de chance, nous serons près en Janvier et pourrons rejoindre la mission.
