This island was once full of life… now it sits in complete silence. Exploring an abandoned resort as nature slowly takes everything back. In this episode of Sailing with the Jameses, we anchor in the bay of a once thriving and popular holiday destination in The Whitsundays and head ashore to explore an abandoned island resort that time — and nature — are slowly reclaiming. What was once a bustling destination built for paradise has been left behind, with empty buildings, overgrown paths, and breathtaking views standing as reminders of what once was. We last visited this place a couple of years ago, and the changes since then are impossible to ignore. Nature is quietly taking over, transforming a once-thriving resort into something both eerie and beautiful. As we hike inland, we’re rewarded with incredible views, dramatic cliff lines, hidden corners, and one of the island’s most striking natural features — a massive rock balanced in a way that feels almost unreal. If you enjoy abandoned places, island adventures, sailing life, and seeing how nature reclaims what we build, you’re in the right place :) xx --------------------------------- 🎉 WANT TO KEEP VIDEOS COMING? What happens when you pull up anchor knowing a storm is coming—and sail straight into it anyway? In this episode of our liveaboard sailing adventure, we leave the safety of the anchorage and head directly into deteriorating weather as part of our real-world preparation for sailing around the world. Living aboard a sailboat full-time means learning to work with the weather, not just waiting for perfect conditions. As we hoist sails and turn into strengthening winds, this sail becomes an important heavy weather training session. We practice reefing early, managing sail trim, handling rough seas, and making calm, deliberate decisions when conditions are far from comfortable. This episode is about far more than rough seas and dark clouds. It’s about building confidence offshore, understanding how our sailboat performs in challenging conditions, and developing the skills every sailor needs before taking on long-distance cruising and bluewater passages. Whether you’re new to sailing or an experienced sailor, heavy weather is something all sailors eventually face—and learning how to prepare is essential. If you’re interested in liveaboard life, sailboat cruising, or preparing for ocean sailing, this video offers a realistic look at what it takes to get ready for full-time cruising and long-term travel by sailboat. We share honest moments from onboard as the weather builds, giving you an inside look at the decisions, teamwork, and seamanship required when sailing in less-than-ideal conditions. This channel follows our journey as liveaboard sailors preparing to sail around the world, sharing the highs, the challenges, and everything in between. From storm sailing and anchoring techniques to everyday life on a sailboat, we document the reality of choosing a life at sea. If you love sailing videos, sailboat adventures, liveaboard sailing, and traveling the world by sailboat, make sure to subscribe and join us as we continue preparing for our global sailing journey. Thanks for watching and welcome aboard! Each experience we have and each new sailing skill learnt just keeps bringing us closer to taking off to sail around the world in our Beneteau Oceanis 430 @SailingAstridTheWombat living our boat life dream. We are Gav and Shezz an Aussie couple with a dream to sail and scuba dive around the world. We bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 in October 2023 with zero sailing experience but the belief that we can do this. We have filmed our journey from looking for boats, buying the boat and downsizing our house so we can liveaboard and all the messy wonderful life stuff in between. Join us now as we start to get our boat prepared for liveaboard life. As new sailors we want to share all of our learnings and keep it real in our videos. We want to show step by step what it takes to choose a boat, buy the boat and learn how to sail. Our sailing learning curve is steep so come along with us as we learn and grow as liveaboard sailors. His biggest fear? What if he came alone and didn’t connect with anyone for a whole week on a yacht? But once he stepped on board, he realised something most people who choose sailing have the same mindset, the same energy, the same curiosity about life. Very quickly it stopped feeling like strangers. It became teamwork, shared tasks, shared jokes… a small little family for the week. This is the magic of sailing you don’t come alone, you just arrive alone :)

After 2 nice days we thought it was all good. Then we couldn't take the sail down Being out in the ocean with full sails up is great, until you can't take them down. After the holidays, getting back into the refit has been harder than we expected. In this episode of the 1€ boat refit, we return to Seabird and try to find our rhythm again, but bad weather, low motivation, and the sheer amount of work left make it a real struggle. This boat refit has never been easy, but this week really tested us. Cold days, rain, and a long to do list make us question how to move forward and how to stay motivated when progress feels slow. If you’re restoring a boat, tackling a big DIY project, or just trying to get back into routine after a break, you’ll probably relate to this one. Sailing deep into Norway's Fjords we find one so long that it almost cuts the country in half, enabling us to reach Sweden. Majestic peaks, coupled with spectacular waterfalls, join us as we sail through the narrow channels of Northern Norway and explore this magnificent environment. The eagle that you see both in the trailer and this video itself was perched on a channel marker. We were expecting it to fly off before we got close with Florence but it stayed put until we were just one boat length away! We couldn't believe our luck at getting such a close encounter with this magnificent bird. For our real time location tracker and extra content, join the crew at www.patreon.com/SailingYachtFlorence We have sailed over 60,000 ocean miles around the world including a complete circumnavigation on our 37ft boat, Florence. After 9 years of experience sailing in the tropics, this series presents a new challenge and a chance to learn new skills as we sail north to the Arctic. Join us as we share the highs, lows, and challenges of travelling around the world by boat, sailing offshore across oceans and exploring remote locations. #sailing #boatlife #boatlifestyle #sailingboat #circumnavigation #sailingyachtflorence #yachtlifestyle #syflorence #sailingaroundtheworld #ArcticSailing #norwaytravel 00:00 – Intro 00:50 – Sailing Northern Norway 08:15 – Fjord sailing shortcut Norway to Sweden 20:27 – Next Time Music in order as played: Be Epic - www.hooksounds.com – Licenced Summer Memories - www.hooksounds.com – Licenced A Time to Shine - www.hooksounds.com – Licenced Spirit Momentum - www.hooksounds.com – Licenced Belief in Faries - www.hooksounds.com – Licenced Beyond Life - www.hooksounds.com – Licenced Good Morning - www.hooksounds.com – Licenced Journey Echos - www.hooksounds.com – Licenced

This episode shares the reality of passages, the reality of the day in, and the day out. We get some great winds that give us awesome speeds, but the seas keep us on our ass lol! Day trip Island hopping throughout the Windward a Leeward islands of the Caribbean does not compare with passages that include 3 or more days let alone the month long passage it takes to cross the Pacific Ocean to that first landfall. Trade winds of the Caribbean are a wonderful thing for longer passages, if you can handle them. Please consider supporting our videos on Patreon. Guide to Port Entry is a vital nautical publication used by navigators and ship operators to support safe and efficient port approaches. In this video, we examine how to properly use the Guide to Port Entry as part of the passage planning process, focusing on ports, approaches, pilotage, and port-specific operational information. This tutorial explains how to interpret both the text volumes and plans volumes of the Guide to Port Entry and how they complement nautical charts, Ocean Passages for the World (NP 136), ENCs, and other Admiralty publications. Using practical examples, including Port Said, Egypt, the video demonstrates how to extract key information such as geographical positions, traffic flow, pilot boarding grounds, anchorages, and approach procedures, and how to apply this information to refine an initial route into a more detailed passage plan. This video is intended for deck officers, cadets, and maritime students who want to strengthen their understanding of port information, pilotage requirements, and safe port entry planning in accordance with good seamanship and passage planning principles. #passageplanning #voyageplanning #routeingchart #seamanship #maritime #seafarer #seaman #bsmt #maritimestudents #ecdis https://youtu.be/Pmxkac8hyTs https://youtu.be/Yj3zcLi88HY

We set sail on one of those rare, perfect days in French Polynesia—a slow, easy cruise from Tahaa to Raiatea. No rush, no schedule… just smooth water, warm sun, and island vibes. We enjoyed lunch underway while Chloe relaxed on deck, soaking it all in, before arriving at a stunning anchorage. From there, we took the dinghy up a peaceful river to explore a beautiful botanical garden tucked away in the jungle. As the day wound down, we moved the boat out to the reef to spend the night, then headed ashore for happy hour and dinner at a gorgeous resort—one of those moments that reminds you exactly why sailing life is so special. I caught an 8-pound catfish from Lewisville Lake, TX and brought it straight from the water to the cutting board. In this video, I show how I clean and fillet a big catfish the right way—no waste, no shortcuts. This is Part 1 of a 3-part series where I turn this catch into homemade fish balls from the galley. Part 2 covers prep and seasoning, and Part 3 shows the full recipe. Life afloat, from catch to cook. Sailing Into Nirvana. Cheers!

► On the second-hand market for boats under 40 feet, the Lagoon 380 has become the must-have. Admittedly, this bestseller, which saw more than 900 examples built, has aged pretty well and offers remarkable comfort for its size... but for budgets just over €100,000, there are other models to consider, such as the Athena 38 by Fountaine Pajot, which offers two advantages: it is more affordable than the Lagoon and is faster under sail! ► Launched at the La Rochelle boat show in September 1994, the Athena 38 was positioned between the Tobago 35 and the Venezia 42. All the models in this second generation, designed by Joubert/Nivelt, are characterized by their blunt bows, very rounded shapes on the inside (the miracle that polyester GRP must have been for naval architects long familiar with wood, steel, aluminum, and chined bilges!) and finally the overhanging coachroof cap, which is the one feature that would be retained and still remains today. ► Lightweight and well-canvased, the Athena 38 is lively and fun to sail from the single helm station – positioned on the aft face of the coachroof, on the starboard side. Obviously, the relatively short length and skeg keels reduced do it no favors when close-hauled in bigger seas, but in all other conditions, this little catamaran will surprise more than one helmsman with its performance - which can be boosted by decent sails and the installation of folding propellers. ► The model Graham presents to us is from 2001 and is a three-cabin version - the entire starboard hull is dedicated to the owner. The nacelle offers a rounded saloon that can easily accommodate six people, a chart table/desk, and a U-shaped galley. Logically, there is only one bathroom per hull. On the starboard side, Graham has a fully equipped workshop. Admittedly, the comfort is somewhat rustic, the sill at the entrance to the nacelle is a higher than we see today, the sugarscoops are not particularly wide and the paneling is a little worn in places... but for a nearly 25-year-old multihull purchased for €115,000, the Athena 38 still has a lot to offer and, above all, can take you anywhere: An excellent base for refit! ► Technical specifications: Builder: Fountaine Pajot Architect: Joubert/Nivelt Interior design: Olivier Flahault Length: 38’ (11.6 m) Beam: 20’8” (6.3 m) Draft: 3’1” (0.95 m) Air draft: 59’ (17.85 m) Light displacement: 12,125 lbs (5.5 t) Sail area: 947 sq ft (88 m²) Motors: 2 x 20 HP Fuel: 180 l Water: 360 l Second-hand price: from €100,000 ex-tax ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests!
