Tough voyage to the island of Helgoland. Beautiful scenery and really worth the trip out here. The Nauticat 38 S/Y Maja sailed out from Cuxhaven in Germany on a rough day in July 2025, and stayed over night. Next day we continued our journey to Delfzijl in the Netherlands. Heligoland is an island in the German Bight of the North Sea. The originally larger island broke up in the New Year's Flood of 1721; since then, the neighboring island known as Düne has existed. The municipality of Heligoland has a population of 1,329 (December 31, 2024). Measured from the eastern shore of the main island to the west coast of the Schleswig-Holstein mainland near Sankt Peter-Ording, Heligoland is 48.5 km from the mainland. The Heligoland and Düne archipelago has been part of German territory since 1890 and is integrated into the Pinneberg district (Schleswig-Holstein) as the independent municipality of Heligoland. Special tax regulations apply to both islands: Although the municipality is part of the German economic territory, it is neither part of the customs territory of the Union nor are German excise taxes levied. A sailing yacht encounters trouble, leading to a dramatic rescue at sea. The bright orange rescue boat arrives and begins the tow, which takes about three and a half hours. See the rough waves and the arrival back to port after the heavy seas. We had to call for help after losing control of our boat. The Danish rescue service came to our rescue and towed us to shore. Everyone was very professional, both the coastal radio and the rescue boat. About an hour after calling for help the small rescue boat came to help us. After getting the lines aboard our boat they towed us for almost four hours to the closest port, Grenaa in Denmark. We want to thank both the Danish coastal radio (Lyngby Radio) and the Danish maritime rescue team for a very professional and well performed rescue operation. Although we had this situation far off shore and in heavy weather we were never afraid and we understood that we would be well taken care of. Our boat is a Nauticat 38 ketch motorsailer made in Finland in 1982. S/Y Maja is hull number 156. The Nauticat is a heavy and seaworthy boat. After months of hard work with the boat maintenance, the boat has a beautiful new teak deck along with a bunch of other fantastic upgrades and equipment installations. In this video, I take you on a detailed tour to show you exactly how everything turned out. How expensive was it, and is it worth it? Another boat undergoes a complete boat restoration! This sailing journey highlights the realities of boat life and the commitment it takes to maintain a yacht. From minor fixes to major overhauls, owning boats is a labor of love, much like restoring a classic sea ray. This project has definitely turned out to be quite an investment — way more expensive than I initially expected — but I’m not going to reveal the exact cost. We finally get stuck into our sailboat refit, starting with the removal of our old, leaky hatches and windows. What begins as a straightforward job quickly turns into a bigger project when we uncover even more hidden wood rot beneath the frames — just what every sailor loves to find… With no working engine (our prop shaft snapped), we have to figure out how to move our 45-foot sailboat once again. The plan? Tow her up the Cairns inlet using a couple of small tinnys — a DIY towing mission that’s becoming all too familiar. Between the window removal, surprise repairs, and yet another sailboat towing operation, this week is all about making slow but steady progress on our floating home.
