Why are whales sinking sailboats? Over the last few years, reports of orcas attacking sailboats have exploded across the sailing world, particularly off the coasts of Spain, Portugal, and the Strait of Gibraltar. Sailors have reported killer whales targeting rudders, disabling steering, and in some cases sinking boats entirely. But what’s really going on here? Are these whales hunting boats, playing with them, or reacting to something humans did? In this video, we break down the real evidence behind orca encounters with sailboats, including documented attacks, the science behind whale behavior, and the theories researchers are investigating. We’ll look at why rudders seem to be the main target, how often these incidents actually happen, and what sailors can do if they encounter a pod of curious or aggressive killer whales at sea. If you sail offshore, cruise internationally, or just love strange ocean mysteries, this is a story you need to understand. Need a consult? My $1.5M electric catamaran is finally making progress… but somehow it still doesn’t look like it. In this episode I head back to the Island Spirit factory in Thailand for a full behind-the-scenes update on the build. It’s been a couple weeks since my last visit, and while a LOT has been done behind the scenes, from the outside it’s hard to tell. So I climb onboard and show you exactly what’s changed—and what hasn’t. While at the factory, I also catch something pretty incredible… Hull #6 being pulled out of the mold using massive cranes. You don’t usually get to see how these boats are actually built, and this was wild. Back in Pattaya, I prep my new Highfield dinghy, start planning a stereo install, and show all the tools and spare parts I’ve been stocking up on for the new boat. And then Chloe takes me to a Thai night market where things get… interesting. Durian, pig’s feet, chicken intestines—she tries it all. This build has been a rollercoaster, but we’re getting closer. Watch the full episode here: https://youtu.be/szQUqooUa1o Ahoyyyy Delos Tribe! The nerd-fest continues in this week's episode, but we're taking a slightly different direction in this one. In the previous few episodes it's been all about the tech and what it's capable of, but in this video we're more focused on the practicality of how it's going to actually fit together in the boat. Space is the one thing we never have enough of on a boat, so with the help of Conor we're going to take you on a suuuuper deep dive into how we will go from a tiny, empty room to cramming 20 some-odd pieces of gear and batteries to create an efficient and well functioning layout for everything. We hope you enjoy nerding out on this kinda stuff as much as we do! Watch the full episode here: https://youtu.be/szQUqooUa1o

This is part 2 of answering some of the questions we get asked about living and traveling full time on our sailboat as a family.
In this episode, we sail from Los Angeles Harbor in San Pedro, California to White Cove, Catalina Island. We start with light winds and then manage to get the sails up after crossing the shipping lanes for some champagne sailing. We encounter a fog bank as we approach the island. Fortunately, it clears out as we make our way into the anchorage. --- Keeldragger Substack Blog https://keeldragger.substack.com Keeldragger Great Pacific Adventure T-shirts! https://maritimetees.net/products/keeldragger-great-pacific-adventure-t-shirt?utm_source=copyToPasteBoard&utm_medium=product-links&utm_content=web Tracker: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV_Keeldragger/ Supporting the Channel: We appreciate your Likes, Channel Subscription, and Comments! Alberg 37 Used Boat Review: https://www.practical-sailor.com/sailboat-reviews/sailboats-36-40ft/alberg-37-used-boat-review/ The Morgan 382 might be one of the most overlooked cruising sailboats ever built. Designed by legendary naval architect Ted Brewer and produced between 1977 and 1982, this 38-foot cruising sailboat has quietly built a reputation for being strong, comfortable offshore, and surprisingly capable under sail. With a fin keel, skeg-hung rudder, 17,000 lb displacement, and nearly 40% ballast ratio, the Morgan 382 was designed in the era when cruising boats were built for real ocean passages. Today, many of these boats can still be found on the used market for $20,000–$40,000, making it one of the most affordable ways to own a serious cruising sailboat. In this video we take a closer look at the Morgan 382 sailboat, including its design history, specs, performance, interior layout, common owner concerns, and why it may be one of the best budget cruising sailboats still available today. If you're researching affordable bluewater sailboats, classic cruising yachts, or considering a liveaboard or offshore cruising boat, the Morgan 382 might surprise you. #sailboat #sailing #bluewatercruising #sailboatreview #usedsailboat #cruisingsailboat #liveaboardboat #sailinglife Practical Sailor is your trusted resource for reviews of sailboats and sailing gear. https://www.practical-sailor.com Chat with us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/PracticalSailor/
Filmlänge 85 Minuten in HD-Qualität

In the Galápagos, conservation is a constant effort. In this episode of The Enchanted Isles, Monty Halls visits the Los Petreles Reserve to see how dedicated work is helping protect one of the islands’ most vulnerable species. The Galápagos petrel, a critically endangered seabird, faces threats from invasive species introduced over time. Here, restoration projects are working to rebuild habitats, control predators, and give these birds a chance to recover. *Los Petreles Reserve is owned and managed by the Jocotoco Conservation Foundation Subscribe and join the journey. Paikea refit, sailboat restoration, America's Cup boat salvage, carbon fiber repair, sailboat interior renovation, DIY boat building, Volvo Ocean Race, boat refit series, Valencia boat yard After a huge push, we’re finally at a point where the massive refit of our boat, Paikea, is showing serious progress. We’re tired, but we’re committed, and in this video, we’re giving you a full walkthrough of where we’re at. In this episode: America’s Cup Salvage: We grabbed carbon nomex panels and massive carbon sail battens from an AC catamaran Alinghi 5 that was being demolished. Will it look cool or just warped?! Structural Stiffening: See how we used a carbon batten to fix a flexy spot on the cabin roof and prevent hard points. Interior Demolition & Reconstruction: We’ve ripped out the old liner and are rebuilding the galley, companionway steps, and a MASSIVE new pantry. Upcycled Lockers: Harry is building out his cabin with lockers from the Volvo Ocean Race boat, Trifork/Ericcson 4. Aft Cabin & Shower: The shower/toilet area is finally taking shape! We’re fitting a carbon sink we’ve been saving for years and building a custom floor. Smart Plumbing: We’re installing a gravity-fed black water system to minimize pumps and complexity. Plus new hatches, stanchions etc. We’re getting there! From the "oh sh#t" phase to the "okay, we’re getting there" phase, I definitely think there is a bit of crazy here on Paikea. We leave the stunning Lakka, Paxos before the swell increases, with Vasiliki in sight. About 12 nautical miles from land the fishing line starts singing & the excitement on the boat is high when Hugh lands the biggest fish of his life! You could not wipe the smile of this kids face. This mixed in with some unbelievable drone imagery, a windy destination & travelling with friends, this was a day to remember.

In 2014, I delivered a Beneteau First 47.7 from the Bahamas to Cartagena. Somewhere in the Caribbean, 150 miles offshore, I found myself ankle-deep in water, crew vacuuming the bilge in the dark, batteries dead, no GPS, no autopilot. I didn't know at the time how close we were to losing the keel entirely. When we hauled the boat in Cartagena, I understood what had happened — and I understood something else. That boat had a sister ship. The Cheeky Rafiki. This video is about how production boats are built, why this specific failure mode exists, how to spot it on your own boat, and why the conversation about it has stayed too quiet for too long. 📖 Be The Captain — the last signed First Edition copies ship FREE for 2 more days: https://bethecaptain.com If you own a production boat — especially a fin-keel racer-cruiser built between the '70s and now — pull up your floorboards and watch this first. 🔗 Official Cheeky Rafiki MAIB Report: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/55408664e5274a157200005b/MAIBInvReport_8_2015.pdf Sailing Zingaro | James Evenson 85,000+ offshore miles | U.S. Navy Submarine veteran | Author, Be The Captain Chapters 0:00 The night I almost lost the keel 1:17 The delivery: Bahamas to Cartagena 2:24 Wind builds — and so does the water 4:02 Last night at sea: ankle deep, batteries dead 5:35 We make it — emergency haul out in Cartagena 6:27 How production boats are actually built 8:04 The grid, the glue, and what holds it together 9:43 Why fin-keel race boats stress this bond to failure 11:18 What I found when the boat came out of the water 13:44 The Cheeky Rafiki — a sister ship, four souls lost 15:23 This isn't about bashing Beneteau 16:12 Who's responsible when a boat fails offshore? 17:01 What actually happened to Cheeky Rafiki 19:20 Why I quit doing deliveries 20:57 What you need to do — pull up your floorboards #sailing #sailinglife #offshore #sailboat #boatsafety #beneteau #cheekyrafiki #keelfailure #bluewatersailing #passagemaking #sailingyoutube #learntosail #boatlife #productionboat #sailingzingaro

Panikmache? Was war kaputt? #Segeln #Biscaya #Segelboot #Familie #Weltreise #LebenAufDemBoot #Blauwassersegeln #Atlantik #Notlandung #VIVICAM
