We apologize for not getting this video out sooner. Some health issues have slowed me down. We promise that more videos are coming and in a more timely manner. This is another video where we attempt to find enough wind to sail. The forecast called for winds from 2 to 4 early increasing to 5 to 7 as the day progressed. Unfortunately, that never happened. The wind did pick up briefly but failed to fill in as predicted. We really appreciate that you've taken the time to watch this video. We could use a little help with our views so, if you enjoyed this video, please share with your family and friends to promote our channel. Please remember to give us a LIKE and provide a comment. Dacron sails, made of woven polyester, have been the cruising standard since the 60s. They're durable, affordable, and tough. Their main weakness? Stretching over time, leading to a loss of shape and performance. #DacronSails #Sailmaking #Yachting #Boating

In this episode we pick up where we last left off--in the middle of the ocean, approximately halfway between Buzzards Bay and the Chesapeake Bay, drifting with no wind. Light conditions persist for the next 36 hours until some solid southerlies finally show up ahead of a strong cold front. But before then we are met with all sorts of wonders, from a giant Fin Whale to a (yellowish) green flash! The Reality of Sailing This African Delta Alone | A Map, $170 Tax, Beached boat & Bloody Foot |S7E30
Navigating the Casamance River delta in Senegal is as magical as it is nerve-wracking. In this episode, a pod of dolphins finds me—first following in my wake, then leading the way through the winding, mangrove-lined channels. These dolphins are here for a reason: they’re feasting on the river's abundant shrimp, and for a brief moment, they brought me into their world. But the beauty of the river comes with a constant challenge: the depth. With one eye on the horizon and the other glued to my depth sounder, I have to navigate carefully to avoid running aground on the hidden sandbanks of the delta A Special Map from Ziguinchor I wasn't just wandering; I was looking for a very specific spot. Back in Ziguinchor, an old French sailor shared his local knowledge with me, handing over a hand-drawn map of a secluded beach perfect for careening. Following those ink lines through the shifting sands of the delta felt like a true mission. But the clock was ticking. I’m not a rich yachtsman, and the reality of cruising in Senegal is that it's expensive. The authorities charge a $170/month navigation tax for the river. My permit was nearly up, and with the last of my funds going toward fuel, cooking gas, and food for the trek back north to Dakar, I was—quite frankly—broke. The Solo Scrape: A 65-Year-Old’s Mental Battle At 65, the stress of a sliced foot from a sharp oyster shell combined with the financial pressure was heavy. To prepare for the long trek back north to Dakar, the hull needed to be spotless. With the help of a local named Gilbert, I managed to beach the boat. But to avoid being "neaped"—stuck on the sand until the next moon’s high tide—I didn't push her as high up as I should have. This meant I had to finish the job alone, standing in waist-deep river water.Locals in Ziguinchor assured me the water here is too salty for crocodiles—they stay much further up-river in the fresh-water tributaries. But when you’re alone in waist-deep, murky water with a bleeding foot, logic starts to slip. Every ripple in the mangroves feels like a set of eyes, and the "spook factor" becomes very real. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #TheCruisingKiwis
Cape Dory sailboats are often prone to leaks at the hull-to-deck joint, which can occur both at the teak toe rail fasteners and where the glued joint edge has degraded. Sealing this area from above is a huge task; it requires either fiberglassing over the entire toe rail and then repainting the whole boat, or removing the rail entirely to glass the joint and reinstalling a rail - which still leaves you with potential leak points at the new fastener holes that could leak. Instead, to save some labor and ensure a seal, here in part 5 of this Cape Dory 30 Refit series we make this deck joint watertight by fiberglassing it from below deck. This internal approach creates a permanent bond without the need for a total exterior refit. By choosing this method, we still have the option of keeping the original toe rail in place and adding some height to the worn down rail by laminating another piece of wood to the top and finishing it with a durable accent paint rather than high-maintenance varnish. If you have other techniques for tackling these joints or any questions about the process, let me know in the comments.

NMEA 2000 (often written **N2K**) is the standard marine network used to connect instruments on boats—GPS, wind sensors, engine data, autopilot, tank levels, etc.—into one shared system. Think of it like the boat’s internal “internet,” but built for reliability and real-time data. Given you’re sailing and already running systems like Signal K and onboard electronics, this is exactly the backbone tying everything together. --- # 🧭 What NMEA 2000 actually is At its core, NMEA 2000 is: * A **CAN bus network** (same tech used in cars) * Running at **250 kbps** * Using a **backbone + drop cable architecture** * With standardized connectors (usually **Micro-C**) ### Key concepts: * **Backbone (trunk):** Main cable running through the boat * **Drop cables:** Short cables connecting devices to the backbone * **T-connectors:** Where devices plug into the backbone * **Terminators:** Required resistors at each end of the backbone * **Power injection:** 12V power supplied into the network --- # ⚙️ How the network is structured Here’s the mental model: ``` [Terminator]—[T]—[T]—[T]—[T]—[Terminator] | | | GPS Wind MFD ``` * The **horizontal line = backbone** * The **vertical lines = drop cables to devices** --- # 🔌 Components you need ### 1. Backbone cable * Thick cable running the length of your boat ### 2. T-connectors * One per device * Backbone plugs into left/right * Device plugs into the bottom ### 3. Drop cables * Short cables from device → T-connector * Max length: **6 meters** ### 4. Terminators (CRITICAL) * One **male** and one **female** * Must be at **each end of the backbone** ### 5. Power cable * Injects 12V into the network * Typically connected near the middle of the backbone --- # ⚡ Wiring step-by-step ## Step 1 — Build the backbone Start by laying out your T-connectors: ``` [T]—[T]—[T]—[T] ``` Then connect them side-by-side to form a line. --- ## Step 2 — Add terminators At both ends: ``` [Terminator]—[T]—[T]—[T]—[T]—[Terminator] ``` 👉 Without terminators, the network **won’t work properly**. --- ## Step 3 — Add power Insert a power cable into one T: * Red → +12V (fused, usually 3–5A) * Black → Ground ⚠️ Important: * Only **ONE power source** on the network * Do NOT power from multiple devices --- ## Step 4 — Connect devices Each device gets: * A drop cable * Plugged into a T-connector Example: ``` [T] → GPS [T] → Chartplotter [T] → Wind sensor ``` --- ## Step 5 — Turn it on Once powered: * Devices auto-detect each other * Data flows automatically (plug-and-play) --- # 📏 Important rules (people often get wrong) ### 1. Total backbone length * Max: **~100 meters** ### 2. Drop cable length * Max: **6 meters per device** ### 3. Total drop length * Max combined: **78 meters** ### 4. Power * Inject near the center of the backbone * Avoid powering from one extreme end --- # 🧠 How data works (simple view) Devices broadcast messages called **PGNs (Parameter Group Numbers)** Example: * GPS → position * Wind sensor → wind angle/speed * Engine → RPM, temp All devices can “listen” to all data. --- # 🔗 Integrating with your setup (important for you) Since you're already using: * Signal K * Grafana * Onboard systems You’ll likely want: ### 👉 NMEA 2000 → Signal K gateway Examples: * Actisense NGT-1 * Yacht Devices USB Gateway * CANable (DIY option) This lets you: * Log NMEA 2000 data * Visualize it in Grafana * Automate (like your anchor logging system) --- # ⚠️ Common mistakes ❌ Missing terminators ❌ Powering network from multiple points ❌ Using drop cables as backbone ❌ Exceeding cable lengths ❌ Mixing NMEA 0183 directly (needs converter) --- # 🧰 Minimal working setup example If you wanted the simplest network: * 2x Terminators * 3x T-connectors * 1x Power cable * 1x GPS * 1x Chartplotter That’s it—you’ve got a working NMEA 2000 network. --- # 🧭 Practical tip for your boat Given your Bavaria 44 and offshore setup: * Run backbone along **main cable routes (port or starboard side)** * Place T-connectors near: * Helm * Nav station * Engine panel * Keep drops short and clean * Label everything (huge time saver later) ---

SailGP finally got to land in South America, with the inaugural Rio Sail Grand Prix taking place over the weekend. The debut was supposed to be in 2025, but after the collapse of the Australia team's wingsail in San Francisco, structural improvements were needed throughout the entire fleet and it was judged that they couldn’t complete the work in time for the Brazilian event that year. There’s no doubt that Rio pulled out all the stops for the event, and the grandstand was buzzing with the famous samba atmosphere. SailGP has been revolutionary for sailing in many aspects, and provides a visual spectacle unlike any other in the sport. Seeing the fleet of thirteen F50s racing (the fourteenth, the New Zealand Black Foils, are having a new boat built after their catastrophic collision) is impressive regardless of whether you’re a sailor or not. The problem with ‘Grandstand’ sailing though, is the race area is defined well in advance of the event, as it has to take place in front of the spectators, regardless of the prevailing conditions. This is where the conflicts between sport and entertainment become complex, and with SailGP, it is the entertainment which is winning out. To purists, this is an anathema: Sailing should always be on as fair a racecourse as possible, and if the fleet needs to go offshore to get an even wind, then so be it. But let’s get this straight, SailGP is an entertainment product. Fair is very low down in the priority list for a venue, and well behind getting a suitable location for the spectators, corporate hospitality, and iconic backgrounds. For the TV producers, having Sugarloaf Mountain and the 30-metre tall Art Deco statue of Christ the Redeemer framing the fleet is the priority, regardless of whether half the fleet is in full send mode and the others are wallowing in no wind. In this video I walk through the realities of running LiFePO₄ offshore, not from theory, but from lived experience. These systems are incredibly powerful, but they demand respect and understanding. You can’t just drop them in like lead-acid and hope for the best. I cover the key failure points and how to avoid them: – Why alternators and lithium BMS don’t naturally get along, and what happens if a BMS shuts while charging – The importance of proper charge control and voltage awareness – Avoiding dangerous wiring mistakes like cross-connecting or “jumping” systems under load – Why make-before-break switching can be critical — and where it can also go wrong – Using fast-blow protection (T-fuses) and designing systems that fail safely – The reality that if a lithium battery goes critical, you’re not fighting that fire I also talk about something most boats ignore: Why are we still putting lithium batteries deep inside the boat? We’ve had external gas lockers and jettisonable fuel systems for years. Lithium is light — there’s a strong argument for mounting it externally, in a way that allows rapid isolation or even disposal if something goes seriously wrong. Finally, I touch on system philosophy: – Use the tech — it’s incredible – But stay hyper-aware while the industry is still evolving – Build redundancy, including separate backup power systems – Monitor everything — voltage, current, behavior — don’t fly blind This isn’t about fear. It’s about competence. Handled properly, lithium transforms offshore capability. Handled casually, it introduces risks most sailors don’t fully understand yet.
