If you own a boat, you know that you will have to fix pretty much every 'working' single part of it at some stage. DIY is the best way to learn about a boat and all of its idiosyncrasies. Thank goodness, Dan & I have been DIY-ing since we met! Paying someone to do it is very expensive and tedious to organise. Essentially you would spend a large amount of time stuck waiting in marinas or on a dry dock if you are relying on trades to answer phones, book you in and show up! We've been lucky this year to have some great trades, but have also had poor experiences over the last 18 months. Dan does the majority of the work on our boat & although our tools and spare parts weigh a tonne, they are essential in travelling safely. Replacing our fridges has been on the 'want to upgrade' list for the last couple of months of our trip. The 240V wine fridge draws a LOT of power & doesn't have flat racks & the other fridge freezes over so bad that it consumes the food at the back of the fridge, ruining many fruit and veges through frost. It's an expense we would have liked to avoid & yes, we could essentially manage without it, but eventually they'll need replacing and if we are out of the country that is going to be a nightmare task! We sailed Carriacou before Hurricane Beryl. Our favorite spot on Carriacou was Sandy Island - just around the corner from Tyrell Bay customs checkin, but another world altogether. Even then it was just sand, coral reefs, palm trees, and salt ponds. Now, there is little of that even left, but in time, it will rebuild itself. The currents that drop sand there will keep doing their natural thing. It needs few words to describe the beauty - just enjoy the video! Sandy island, off Paradise Beach, near Hillsborough, Carriacou’s capital city is a protected marine park. It’s the largest and most biologically diverse MPA in Grenada and is a unique ecosystem that features a mangrove network, coral reefs, sea grasses, and marine and avi fauna. There are mooring balls which we recommend you use. You can also anchor but you must be far off the coral reefs and only in the sand. Snorkeling was fantastic on the south end for big schools of yellow grunts and big coral heads at the north end. In addition to the usual Caribbean reef fish, we spotted large nurse sharks, rays, and turtles, as well as the flashy silversides. The area is popular for humpback whales in their migration path, but we did not spot any. The beach itself is great for relaxing, picnic and swimming. After getting an overload of sun at the beach, we had dinner at Paradise Beach restaurant - run by a former New Yorker, so of course it was good. The owner’s son will greet you upon arrival at Sandy Island and ask you to make a reservation AND he will pick you up and bring you back no charge. Totally worth it for the food and dining experience and saves having to beach your dinghy. Arabella continued her sail north from Mattapoisett. It was great being back where it all started, surrounded by such a supportive and welcoming community. Sailing through the Cape Cod Canal, Steve and Robin were faced with quite a storm. Upon making it to the harbor, Steve requested a special meal to celebrate surviving the harsh weather. Robin cooked up her mom’s “amazing chicken” to warm their souls. It was great waking up in a different harbor. Before heading on out, the day was spent walking Akiva around Scituate, stopping for coffee, and going through the departure checklist once back on the boat. Unfortunately, the wind was not in their favor for making it to Gloucester under sail, so they motored for the rest of the day. The traveling didn’t stop there. In order to get their truck that was parked back in Mattapoisett, a couple rides on the train were required. Gloucester is America’s oldest seaport, and has worked to maintain its roots as a fishing harbor. If you ever get a chance to visit, you’ll see that it’s still a working harbor with fishing boats coming in and out all day. When in the area, it doesn’t take long to spot old wooden boats sailing around the harbor—including Ardelle, built by Harold Burnham. Throughout the build of Arabella, Harold was a great resource who always provided wise advice. Hello Friends! This is one of the last project videos from the boatyard. Last fall we bought a brand new Isolation Transformer that failed to boot out of the box. The isolation transformer not only protects the boat (and swimmers) from stray current, but it also converts unstable or variable shore power to steady 115V. We decided to go with the Victron 3600W auto transformer. Victron handles its warranty fulfillment through the dealers so it did take a few weeks to sort but we did finally get a full reimbursement for the original unit and could not be happier with the second unit’s performance. In general, we find Victron to offer high quality products and are glad to report that when something goes wrong, they stand behind their product. We've escaped the boatyard! After a paint party with Seahawk - three rounds of Tuff Stuff to keep the barnacles from crashing the party, and three rounds of Biocop tf because cleaning the bottom is so last season - we're ready to hit the water. Avec cette météo exceptionnelle, mon capitaine s’amuse à survoler le voilier de nos petits neveux de la mer, en route pour leur retour à Moorea. En mon absence, je sais que mon amour ne va pas avoir le temps de s’ennuyer. En fait, je crois même que mon éloignement va lui faire le plus grand bien. Il paraît que la préménopause rend parfois désagréable ! Et puis, quatre jours, ça passe vite ! Un peu d’antirouille par ci, un peu de maintenance par-là, un peu de navigation dans des conditions piscinales et me voilà déjà de retour. J’ai profité de mon séjour en ville pour un petit check up médical. Car ici, pas besoin de prendre rendez-vous trois mois à l’avance, même chez un spécialiste. Contrôle technique des 48 ans, impeccable ! Et puisque cette semaine à était productive, nous nous octroyons quelques jours à Bora-Bora. Une grosse dépression subtropicale va nous apporter, dans les prochains jours, beaucoup de vent et surtout, une houle importante devrait perturber notre bassin de croisière. La puissance des vagues qui s’écrasent sur le récif est d’une beauté saisissante, un spectacle grandiose de la nature en furie. L’énergie qu’elle met à brasser l’océan se ressent jusqu’au niveau de la passe de Teavanui. Le courant s’y déchaîne, mais la plénitude du lagon reste inchangée. Nous avons bien fait de venir nous y protéger ! Il faut bien avouer que la perle du Pacifique porte bien son nom. #249 ✍️Au sud-est de Taha’a, près du motu Ceran, la passe Toahotu s’étend, calme et posée, absolument parfaite pour être traversée. Je l’ai vue sur les images de drone ! Avec cette météo exceptionnelle, mon capitaine s’amuse à survoler le voilier de nos petits neveux de la mer, en route pour leur retour à Moorea. En mon absence, je sais que mon amour ne va pas avoir le temps de s’ennuyer. En fait, je crois même que mon éloignement va lui faire le plus grand bien. Il paraît que la préménopause rend parfois désagréable ! Et puis, quatre jours, ça passe vite ! Un peu d’antirouille par ci, un peu de maintenance par-là, un peu de navigation dans des conditions piscinales et me voilà déjà de retour. J’ai profité de mon séjour en ville pour un petit check up médical. Car ici, pas besoin de prendre rendez-vous trois mois à l’avance, même chez un spécialiste. Contrôle technique des 48 ans, impeccable ! Et puisque cette semaine à était productive, nous nous octroyons quelques jours à Bora-Bora. Une grosse dépression subtropicale va nous apporter, dans les prochains jours, beaucoup de vent et surtout, une houle importante devrait perturber notre bassin de croisière. La puissance des vagues qui s’écrasent sur le récif est d’une beauté saisissante, un spectacle grandiose de la nature en furie. L’énergie qu’elle met à brasser l’océan se ressent jusqu’au niveau de la passe de Teavanui. Le courant s’y déchaîne, mais la plénitude du lagon reste inchangée. Nous avons bien fait de venir nous y protéger ! Il faut bien avouer que la perle du Pacifique porte bien son nom. Faut-il donc être fous pour, dans ce décor de trésor si spécial, s’attaquer à l’installation de nos nouvelles toilettes électriques ! Fous peut-être pas, mais cela fait partie de nos obligations.
