Avoiding disaster Build Back Better - Sailing Malaysia This week we are hulling out our cruising catamaran at Rebak Island marina, Malaysia for a much needed rudder bearing replacement for both hulls.. The starboard bearings in particular, top and bottom, are in need of an overhaul and once Rob gets a look at them it's clear to see that when they were last replaced, in New Zealand back in 2015, when we first boat our sailing home, there was some quiet shady workmanship involved in their construction. Ivan and Ollie also roll up their sleeves and get involved in the boat work, completing several decent full days of work stripping and preparing the hulls for their new antifoul. The boys work very hard, which leaves them with a sense of satisfaction, but drains them to their core. And our catchup with family around the world includes Declan having fun with the quokka's in Australia, Finn amazing us with a very quick single sculls race at the North Island championship and Rachel discovering world class boat parts being sold not a stones throw from where she grew up. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill # 199 #boatwork #sailing
Episode 030 Since moving aboard our sailboat, Te Tāiko, we have been on a steep learning curve. Two mistakes we have recently made is not knowing the actual size of our water tanks and properly managing our water use. Managing resources is essential when choosing to live off grid. We had been having such a good time that we let this slip a bit. We have chosen to live by the principle of keeping things simple. Therefore, we keep Tāiko as simple as we can so that we can sail and live on her but we're not stuck fixing her in exotic and remote locations. One of the ways we keep her simple is by not having a water maker. Fortunately for us though, we have a custom made rain catcher and we live in New Zealand, which is known as the land of the long white cloud, so we knew it would be only a matter of time before we could fill Tāiko's water tanks again. We could have sailed back to the marina and filled our tanks but that option is not always going to be available to us and buying packaged water is not an option for us as it's expensive and unsustainable. Better to start learning alternative ways now. Plus, this way is far more fun and makes us feel like we've achieved something! We hope you enjoy it! As always, thanks for watching. Sincere thanks to Charlotte Rockstar Jones for composing and recording Te Tāiko's theme song. Please remember to subscribe, like, comment - it helps us out! After a few years of studying and working hard we decided it was time to make a change. We needed a change that would allow us to spend more time together, give us a better work/life balance, and the freedom to travel. While we still had time on our side, we wanted to use it to live rather than use it to chase money. Learning to sail was the answer. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages. With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. In the meantime, follow along with us as we navigate this new lifestyle whilst sharpening our skills exploring New Zealand waters. #boatlife #boat #travelvlog #digitalnomad #lifestyle #sailing #travel

It's been long long overdue but in this episode I finally solo sail and solo anchor on Catalina Island. I've been to Catalina a handful of times on my boat but there has always been a friend or family onboard me. So this is a special trip because I solo sail and solo anchor out overnight at Moonstone Cove on Santa Catalina Island. What's more is that I am buddy boating with my new friend Mark from @keeldragger on his Valiant 40. If you haven't seen his episode of this trip, he's got a different perspective and he makes great videos so give it a watch. @keeldragger If you'd like to support these videos and regular maintenance I have links below. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. We finally reveal a big secret, the route we will take to sail around Cape Horn! Will we conquer sailing's Mt. Everest the hard way? Find out how we do it in this episode! #sailing #reallife #adventure #expedition About Us: We are two young racing sailors that decided to leave life on land and accomplish our goals of sailing around the world and learning about and experiencing different cultures. Originally from the Great Lakes, we left Newport Rhode Island in July of 2019 after refitting our boat DIY style. We then sailed to Maine, and from there down the East Coast of the USA, around Cape Hatteras, to the Bahamas, Back to Miami, and then to the Virgin Islands. From there we headed south to Grenada to escape hurricane season, then back up to St. Maarten where we launched our first Atlantic Crossing to Horta, Azores. We made a quick trip back to the USA in July of '21 to defend our Chicago - Mackinac Race overall title, then it was back to cruising the Canaries, where we launched for our second Transatlantic voyage, sailing to Brazil in South America and on to Uruguay. Now we are rounding the tip of South America in the dangerous waters of the Le Maire Straights, where boats are known to be rolled and sunk in the huge waves and dangerous currents flowing up from Antarctica, the Southern Ocean, and around the infamous Cabo de Hornos! Our goal is to sail around the world via Cape Horn, and that is where we are headed now. Capturing footage to share this epic adventure with you as we round the horn and venture into the canals and fjords of Patagonia, Chile. About Our Boat: We have classic sailing yacht, a J Boats J/46. Like the newer J/45, she is a performance cruiser that can get up and go but is also very comfortable offshore in bluewater. She is faster than most similar sized sailing catamarans and lots of fun to sail, you will surely spill your tea at sea though! She is made of fiberglass and sports a nice wood interior and her interior design is a little less like Ikea than a similar sized Beneteau or Lagoon. She sports a high tech sailing electronics package, the best navigation software, and is set up for off the grid living with a watermaker, lithium batteries, and solar panels and a wind generator. BOAT LIFE in the Pacific Northwest! Navigating fog & rapids in unfamiliar waters | A&J Sailing S2E14
It was an eerie feeling not 'seeing land' for the first time, navigating thru fog across the Queen Charlotte Strait to Deep Cove and onwards thru some gnarly rapids into Drury Inlet, where we had quite the adventure waiting for us.. Ever wondered about cutting and reshaping your jibs? In this video we show how we do exactly that with 2 of our tri radial laminate jibs! We were lucky that NV came with 4 laminate jibs as well as a newer smaller Dacron staysail to go on our babystay. All our laminate jibs were originally designed to be hoisted on a racing tuff luff - which a plastic profile, which fits on top of the forestay and the sails slot into it the same way as they do for furlers - only it doesn’t allow for the sails to be furled and instead they must be hosted up and down after each use. Since we now have a Furler on the front forestay, these jibs are now all too long for this stay as well as our new middle stay, which we added as part of our refit. We wanted this extra stay in order to obtain a wider range of sail configurations and make it easier to manage double handed. We therefore needed to reduce 2 of our jibs; one to fit on the front forestay with the furler and the other to go on the new middle stay which we installed the tuff luff on. In a previous video we’ve already talked about the sail we’ve chosen to fit on the middle stay (watch this video here https://youtu.be/KTlBNZjw-8U), so our first job now was to pick the one to go on the front forestay. As we discussed in this previous video tri radial sails like our laminate jibs are made from triangular panels which radiate out from the three corners of the sail since these are the points the loads are transmitted from. Therefore careful planning is needed before making alterations to these types of sails, as any cut will alter the shape of the panels and result in them no longer meeting at these 3 corners. Our jibs were designed to be used with battens, and so the leech has a positive roach, which means the leech curves over the straight diagonal of the triangle. For the sail we’re going to put on the Furler at the front, we won’t be able to use battens anymore, and without battens, this top curved part of the sail would flap. Therefore part of our alterations for cutting this sail involved cutting the entire leech in order to change it from having a positive roach to a negative roach - in other words, changing the curve from positive to negative - or below the diagonal of the triangle. For anyone that’s interested in seeing how to calculate this curve, we’ve explained it in more detail on our Patreon website **** We decided that our best option was to cut the head as this would disturb the panels the least and to make the cut a diagonal ending at the first batten pocked which we can use as reinforced areas to transmit the loads through. Since we’d cut the head of the sail, we re-inforced this area by stitching the top triangle which we’d cut out at the top, on to the top of where the new head of the sail was. This helps give the sail back the right structure, by helping the forces felt by the sail to continue out to the head of the sail. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you enjoyed this video please consider supporting us on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/SailingNV or with a one-off donation via https://ko-fi.com/sailingnv or paypal https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/sailingnv ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hollyland microphones: https://amzn.to/3GPXuYz and use discount code SailingNV10 to get 10% off -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Caio! On an afternoon sail with our kids in the Florida Keys things get scary when the mainsail rips free and detaches from the boom. What do we do now?! With no sewing experience, or sail knowledge, Nate endeavors to repair it himself. Watch as he struggles to remove the mainsail, gets sentimental about sewing, and does a wonderful job teaching all you other DIYers out there how NOT to mend a sail or re-attach a clew. Somehow or other he manages to get it back up again.... Sailing is about the journey, and on this one we learn a lot, even if we don't succeed.... Thanks for watching! We hope you have a few laughs as we fumble along, and will join us next week as the "journey" continues. Cheers, The SCOUT crew Nate, Megan, Kieran (11) & Eily (9) Music is from Epidemic Sound. Watermakers are an essential piece of kit for remote cruising, so we take good care of our Schenker Zen 30. In this boat work episode, Jamie takes us through how he replaces the membranes. But don't make the same mistake, he nearly lost a nipple in the process! Like most people, we get to know our neighbours in a boat yard and always have a good nose around. Two sailboats up from us, one was having its topsides vinyl-wrapped, something we had never considered before. The process was cheap, quick, not at all messy. Unlike spray-painting there's no need for masks or protective clothing and you don't need to build a tent around the surface to avoid spraying your neighbour. The result looked pretty sweet. Do you have any experience of vinyl-wrapping? What do you think, would you consider vinyl-wrapping your boat? We're splitting up Sailing Asia All good things must come to an end, so after our emotional family adventure in Cambodia it's time for everyone to go their seperate ways. Declan is heading to Australia to spend some time with his girlfriend Chanelle. Finn is flying back to New Zealand to continue his rowing season, Rachel is on a mercy mission to England to catch up with her mother who is in hospital after a fall which fractured her hip and Ivan and Rob are heading back to Malaysia, the boat, Pangkor Marina and boat work. Who drew the short straw? We take a little peek at how everyone is doing in their new homes and Rob and Ivan leave Pangkor for Langkawi with a stowaway on board, meet Ollie, a friend of Ivan's who has come aboard as another set of hands to help out with sailing and boat work. But it isn't all work and no play. After a frisk down from the police in Penang, Rob, Ivan and Ollie get competitive at the 'Flipper of the day' competition held at the Penang water park "Escape" Music David Mumford - Ball and chain Musicbed.com Thank you for helping keep us afloat and supporting the creative process. The plan? To sail around #thecruisingkiwis the world. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #198 #TheCruisingKiwis

Seht selbst, was ich dort erlebe.... If you would like to see more of this 1974 Tartan 30 refit, please subscribe to the channel! Side Note: I have seen where people have mounted the distribution panel without any rubber insulation (i.e., they mounted the panel straight to the wood/fiberglass). While you should make sure all of your connections are mounted firmly to the terminal boards/breakers, and while your panel should never become charged, a short could cause the panel to dissipate heat into the wood. The breakers should trip fairly quickly, but you don't want to really on should and it's better to be safe rather than sorry. It should also be noted that I have a fire port for this panel (i.e., I can get a fire extinguisher behind the panel without having to unscrew anything). Perhaps most importantly, always have a certified marine electrician verify your work.

#Waverover In this video I explain what story boarding is and why craftsmen have been using it for centuries to increase production, accuracy, and test design before ever cutting a piece of wood. I then use the story board to design and build the hatch housing with amazing accuracy. With a bit of hard work and a following sea we will be launching the 8th of July at the Charlottetown Yacht Club. "Forge Your Own Adventure" ***Benefactors Bulkhead Alert*** The Bulkhead is now full. How to made a Dyneema Loop for a Low Friction Ring
We have a huge decision to make! Watch as we battle big waves and strong winds around the dangerous tip of Argentina and the Le Maire Straights, and find out where we go from here, a place few YouTube sailing channels have gone before! Hi loves, here is a snippet of daily life in this simple off-grid community in Autumn here in the heart of the Raincoast, British Columbia’s wild uninhabited pacific coastline to the North.. We really feel at home here on Gilford Island in the beautiful Broughton Archipelago... we anchored our small sailboat in iconic Echo Bay & quickly met everyone who lives in this remote off-grid community, which didn't take long seeing how there's less than ten people here all year round. We ended up moving off our boat and into a rustic and cozy off-grid cottage here.. after a busy Summer moving our floating home around constantly, it's felt really good to be in one place for a while.. We acknowledge the Kwakwaka'wakw people, the original caretakers and stewards of the lands and waterways on which this film was created, on the unceded territory of the Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw First Nations. Capella is a privately owned classic lined motor yacht built in 2001 in Gdansk. She has never been used for charter work. She was immediately transferred to Mallorca, where she has been lying ever since. Capella has been maintained by her current captain since her arrival. There has been an unlimited budget made available for the maintenance which has been religiously adhered to every winter. Therefore, the trawler is in an extremely prestige condition. Capella has always cruised in the Western Mediterranean in all weathers, as a stable and comfortable vessel. More information: https://www.devalk.nl/en/yachtbrokerage/805799/CUSTOM-BUILT-TRAWLER.html
