The water is shallow and the holding is good, but there is nothing there...no stores, no houses, no land, no people...nothing but blue for as far as the eye can see. The reef offers little protection from weather or big swell, but those brave enough to venture there are rewarded with unbelievably clear water - arguably the clearest in the world! - and coral teeming with wild life that have little fear humans...which, it turns out, is great for fishing, but not so good when it comes to sharks.... So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life. We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. After Shaima arrived from its Pacific "Milk Run Crossing" in October 2022 we left her in Opua Bay of Islands Marina and went back home. In December we flew back to New Zealand to cruise and tour the North Island. We stopped in several offshore islands between Opua and Auckland returning following the Coast North up to Wangarei where we hauled out Shaima for her anual maintenance/refit. We were amazed on how many beautiful places we visited, including Bay of Islands smaller islands, Poor Nights, The Mokes, Great Barrier Island, Coromandel Peninsula, Waikehe, and on our return Matangi and Kawau Islands. The wildlife was also impressive, the water cristal clear and the villages both beautiful and historic. From Auckland we rented a car and went to Rotorua visiting lots places and natural sites along de way. Most of this we shared with our youngest daughter and her husband who were in the start of our honeymoon. We were so pleased that they wanted to share the start of their honeymoon with us! Steve and Robin are back aboard Arabella after a long week in Granby. The plan is to make their way to Rockland, about 80 miles up the coast, to help with the final touches and the launch of the schooner Hindu. It will take a few days to get there, with plenty of potential stops to hit along the way. Searching through a guidebook for the Maine coast, Robin discovers Damariscove Island located in Boothbay, Maine. It’s known to be a place of wild and desolate beauty filled with rich history—worth a visit, for sure. It’s crazy to believe, but Arabella celebrates her 1st anniversary on the water. And while she hasn’t ventured too far just yet, she’s been able to explore some beautiful areas close to home. While Robin and Steve continue to dream of sailing to destinations far away, there’s still plenty of learning to be done in the meantime. This not only meant it would be easier to repair/replace in the future but it also gave us (and future owners) far easier access to the water tank below. The morning starts with a delightful encounter with a seal sporting a charming red crest at the jollen spot. After some last-minute preparations, including shopping and dog walks, the crew casts off at 11:15, just before the tide comes in. The initial leg of the journey sees the boat making impressive speeds of over 8 knots, thanks to the tide and a favorable downwind course and the strategic use of the Genoa/jib. Around 2 PM, we smoothly navigate through the Brünsbuttel lock, a solo passage that costs them €21, paid online in advance. As we enter the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal (NOK), the weather remains mild with only small, wispy showers. The cutter jib proves to be an excellent choice for the sheltered, winding channel, providing consistent speed and easy handling. This calm passage is particularly enjoyable for Reef, the ship's canine companion, who relishes the freedom to roam the deck and observe the abundant birdlife. Despite reaching Channel Gieselau at 18:30, we decide to press on, aiming to make significant progress through the NOK. They notice an increase in motorhomes along the shore, with more people waving as they pass. By 20:00, they reach Rendsburg, where they find a welcoming berth at the BYC harbor, a fortunate choice given the poor maintenance and lack of availability at our usual port. The following day brings a more leisurely start, with the crew and dog waking at 7:30 and taking their time to depart. The navigation proves challenging due to heavy ascending freight traffic, requiring frequent adjustments to their speed. Despite these obstacles, they manage to join a lock alongside a large vessel and several other small boats, a slightly nerve-wracking but ultimately successful maneuver. Concerns about Reef's wellbeing and the crew's own fatigue lead to a change in plans. Instead of pushing on to Maasholm, we opt for a shorter journey to Laboe Harbour. Here, they find a pleasant berth and enjoy some sunshine. The evening is capped off with a refreshing walk for Reef on the Hundestrand and dinner at an Italian restaurant by the harbor. The next leg of their journey takes them from Germany to Denmark. An early start sees them departing Laboe at 10:00, initially sailing at a leisurely 5 knots before picking up speed as the wind increases. Despite some showers, we make good progress, reaching speeds between 7 and 8.5 knots. They arrive in Sonderborg at 16:30, navigating through a bridge opening before mooring at the high quay. The following day in Sonderborg is spent at a relaxed pace, exploring the lively city center and preparing for the upcoming Midsommer celebrations. They even encounter Bodil, a famous Norwegian Forest Cat known to roam the town. After restocking supplies, albeit at inflated prices, they set sail for the Dyvig anchorage, maintaining their policy of minimal engine use. At the anchorage, they enjoy the peacefulness of being at anchor, taking Reef for dinghy rides and walks ashore. They indulge in some wine at a pricey but charming hotel restaurant before returning to their boat for dinner. The final day of this video finds us still at Dyvig, where inclement weather encourages a day of relaxation on board. We make a morning trip ashore for supplies and enjoy Reef's newfound enthusiasm for dinghy rides. Steve and Robin moved on from Gloucester and made their way to Portland, Maine. While Robin was away for a few days to lead her company’s retreat, Steve and Noah moved Arabella north for a 2-day trip to Cape Porpoise and southern Maine. On the 2nd day of sailing, the wind was not in their favor, and they had to motor the whole way. However, it was really nice waking up to a quiet, beautiful day in Maine. Steve and Akiva enjoyed a few days in the harbor before Robin returned, and they all decided to extend their stay in the area. Until recently, it had been quite a task getting Victoria on deck. Now with a refined system, Steve no longer needs to worry about hurting his back. After running through the checklist—fire up the systems, check engine oil, fire up the diesel, and pull the anchor—it was time to get out of dodge. Along the way, Steve got news that his mom had been taken to the ER, so their stop in Portland would just be an overnight trip. The plan was to head deeper into Casco Bay to a mooring in Freeport where Arabella could stay while Steve and Robin returned to western MA. When leaving the harbor the following morning, they spotted a NOAA science vessel towing a dead humpback whale that unfortunately became tangled in fishing nets and drowned. French Polynesia consists of archipelagos which are all very different. I will visit three of them. Marquesas, Tuamotus and Society islands. In this video I have engine problems after doing maintenance. I try to find help from other sailors. The Marquesas are mostly steep-to, high volcanic mountains. The Tuamotus are the atolls, het original volcanoes now completely submerged; the society islands are at the phase in between, with high volcanic mountains ringed by shallow lagoons with a fringing reef. De distances between the archipelagos require a shift back into passage mode on board. The Marquesas are some of the most remote inhabited islands on Earth. Once you have sailed the long passage from Panama, like I did, after 4000 NM I found myself in awe of this beautiful scenery. The high islands are the sentinels as you arrive in French Polynesia. I was impressed by the culture and the warm and generous nature of the people. In this video I will show you the island Nuku Hiva also my engine fails when at sea.
