Prepping the sailboat for hauling, I was under a time constraint. This was about 3 days of work: unstepping the masts, removing and securing the standing rigging and running rigging in addition to the electrical cables running through the masts. As I got close to the transport date, we realized I also needed to remove more things... due to height restrictions. I really enjoyed being able to dig in to see how some of these things go together in this old sailboat.... something I wasn't quite able to do while the sailboat was in the water. ============== Support us ============== Like what we're doing & want to help?? We are Sailing Media only (plus a few Husky videos of the WoW mascot) so please Subscribe, check the uploads alert bell, Like and Share. Highlights of what happened globally in the sport of sailing in the last 7 days. On a day when many would have looked at the sea-state and opted for a ‘maintenance day’ it was all systems go at Emirates Team New Zealand who were determined to take their AC75 ‘Te Rehutai’ out to experience conditions that the team haven’t sailed before in Barcelona in an AC75. For the team it's now relocate to Auckland before the next event in Jeddah. This is your weekly Global Sailing highlights show, the World on Water, October 27, 2023. On some days conditions can be marginal for a committee to lay on yacht racing. Today at the 44Cup Alcaidesa Marina there was nothing marginal about the wind strength on the Bay of Gibraltar. Despite the first warning signal for the opening day of competition being brought forward by an hour to 1100 CEST, already at 1000 conditions were exceeding the maximum 25 knot limit for RC44 racing to take place. This is the start of the 44th edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race. Partnered by Rolex since 2002, the event is considered one of the world’s most beautiful and challenging offshore races. An international fleet of 110 yachts from 26 countries are contesting the 2023 race. Following today’s start from Grand Harbour, Valletta, Malta, competitors will tackle the 606-nautical mile (1,122 kilometres) course which comprises an anti-clockwise circumnavigation of Sicily before finishing back in Malta. Ironic after a day blown off as severe gale force winds battered the nearby Rock of Gibraltar, day two of the 44Cup Alcaidesa Marina started with barely a breath of wind. Fortunately, right on queue just before the appointed midday start time, the wind on the Bay of Gibraltar suddenly and forcefully kicked in with an offshore breeze stabilising at 13 knots from 280 degrees. Trained at the Olympic school in the south of France, Erwan Israël boasts an eclectic career and track record, cruiser-racing, match racing, Figaro, circumnavigations of the globe, his experience is diverse and extensive! Dabbling in everything, this discreet sailor is also a formidable competitor. A fine tactician, an extraordinary trimmer and a seasoned helmsman, Erwan Israël has managed to carve out a niche for himself among the very best, both on the water and on shore. Indeed, for several years, he’s specialised in navigation and weather route-ing, to the point that he’s become one of the great experts in the domain. Since 2019, as part of Gitana Team, when he’s not at sea, racing as a crew, Kitefoil World Series Italy reached a crescendo of drama as the top 10 men and women contested the new Medal Series format in the south of Sardinia. Ultimately the pre-event favourites, Max Maeder and Lauriane Nolot, prevailed to win gold in the men's and women's events, although there were plenty of twists and turns along the way. All day long the thermal sea breeze was fighting a battle with the stronger offshore Mistral breeze, which made it very hard to set a fair race course. It also made it very difficult for the riders and their caddies to choose the right kite for the ever-changing conditions. Days 3 and 4, the Bay of Algeciras had a complete change of complexion for the penultimate day of racing at the 44Cup Alcaidesa Marina with the southerly wind initially non-existent, then slowly filling in to 8-10 knots. Going into the final race of the final day of the 44Cup Alcaidesa Marina, just two points separated the top four boats and, with nine points on the table, mathematically any of the top six could still win. Added to this was the venue with a third day of racing from a third direction – the east, blowing across La Linea. Crossing the line the Ceeref team was ecstatic complete with fist pumping and high-fiving. This was the first event win for the 2017 and 2019 44Cup Champions since Oman in February.

Welcome aboard the Willem Johannes, where we're installing a Separett dry toilet. This innovative waterless solution is perfect for boats. The Separett dry toilet, such as the Villa 9010 or the newer Tiny model, uses a urine-diverting system to separate liquid and solid waste. This clever design helps minimize odors and reduces the frequency of emptying, making it ideal for life on the water. The Separett dry toilet boasts several key features that make it an excellent choice for marine applications. Its odor-free operation is ensured by a built-in fan that expels odors and moisture, guaranteeing a fresh-smelling bathroom. Installation is straightforward, requiring only a ventilation pipe and a urine drain hose, with minimal plumbing needed. Maintenance is low, as the toilet doesn't use water or chemicals, making it both simple to upkeep and environmentally friendly. The versatile power options allow it to run on both AC and DC electricity, perfect for various marine setups. By installing a Separett dry toilet on the Willem Johannes, we're embracing a more sustainable and practical approach to onboard waste management. It's an excellent choice for boaters looking to reduce water consumption, eliminate the need for pump-outs, and enjoy a more comfortable sailing experience. Whether cruising canals or sailing the open seas, a Separett dry toilet offers a reliable, eco-friendly solution that's as easy to use as it is to maintain. Check out the details to the toilet on separett.com Join us in this shitty business :-) #separett #drytoilet #sailingadventures

Now it's real, our job on Odd is done and it finally feels real and sad, but also happy to start our new journey. Extra content with a tour of our friends' boats (Sail Life and Teulu Tribe) https://youtu.be/ALrjAfF9OKQ Friends in this episode: @SailLife @TeuluTribe Where we were: https://www.spiceislandmarine.com Follow Odd's new instagram: @expedition_karambak We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). POLICE GUNBOAT ESCORT sailing PIRATED waters This week on our sailing catamaran we retrace our steps and sail from east to west, circumnavigating Singapore via the worlds most pirated waters, The Singapore Strait. Luckily everything is working in our favour, the weather, the currents and the attention of the Singapore police gunboats who escorted us through these treacherous seas all the way to Malaysia to ensure that we didn't entertain any ideas of sneaking our live aboard sailing boat beyond Singapores port limit into the country. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #sailing #gunboat #TheCruisingKiwis #229

Austin replaced the rocker cover gasket that had been leaking for some time. Had to order the gasket through a Yanmar dealer. Cost a fortune. He also fixed a water leak in the sea water heat exchange. Bayly and Austin head for the Monaco Fun Fair at Port Hercule. We have been stuck at a Marina for over a week and a half due to insanely huge dangerous swells and extreme wind and storms. Lenny gets to go to the grocery store! The swell enters our marina and leads to some uncomfortable days. Lenny takes his regular walk every morning to the koi fish pond to visit the fish he loves. We walk though the massive rose garden of Monaco. Lenny goes to the vet, bloodwork is back to normal but his gallbladder is still full of sludge on the ultrasound so he must continue treatment to avoid it rupturing. Looking for our weather window to escape Monaco and head for Nice France. We need to go to our health exam for our France passports.
A webinar-style presentation hosted by The American Schooner Association & The Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race This past summer, after a several-week maintenance period in Annapolis, Andy sailed 59º North's Farr 65 FALKEN on the so-called 'Viking Route' from the Chesapeake to Iceland, via the spectacular Prins Christian Sund fjord system in southern Greenland. Andy will share details about the voyage, including the preparation of both boat and crew, how it compared to our passage to Spitsbergen in 2018, sailing amongst fog & ice in Greenland, the stupendous fjord system in the Prins Christian Sund, and the final stormy 800-miles across Denmark Strait to 66º North in Iceland.

The link to join us is on our Patreon feed, and we have 30+ hours of extra content in our Live Archive. https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Rock climbing in the Organ Mountains isn't uncommon, but the rock climbing traverse Steve and Robin are planning certainly is. In fact, research and planning took 10 years for the first person who attempted it. Rock climbing planning involves books and phone calls, and lots of scrambling in remote places with no trail markers. If you can believe it, this week we'll also be seeing the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, mountain climbing in Red Rock Canyon, elk and grouse hunting in Carson National Forest. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. SO HAPPY TO HAVE MY STEERING FIXED! Huge load off my shoulders now. If you have LEWMAR onboard you might have a problem. At least you should inspect your steering quadrants and couplings. The quality is shockingly poor, but thankfully I finally got my hands on the new quadrant and can fix my LEWMAR problems. At least the one that failed as getting things shipped into Tahiti is ridiculously expensive and time-consuming. According to Bavaria, LEWMAR USA, and Tech Support, I was supposed to have a beefed-up version of the LEWMAR COBRA steering. However after receiving the BEEFED UP version of the quadrant I see a significant difference. My original quadrant was like tinfoil compared to the new one. So I'm really curious if this is what I should have had, and if so why did my yacht not come with this. Or if the beefed-up came later due to what I have experienced. Extremely poor quality. What I do know it's no surprise this did not last. From now on I'm sailing solo again, but first need to fix the steering and sort out some other things before I continue toward the west. The next jump will be 1500 nautical miles nonstop to Fiji. So I also would need to fix my autopilots and a few other things the last days I have here. Please be respectful and kind in your comments, we are only human beings. Ordinary people sharing our extraordinary life with you in good and bad. Thank you so much for tagging along, and for the patrons helping to support making this video possible. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WATCHING AND SUBSCRIBING! I used to sail singlehanded and occasionally have sailing friends onboard. But now the permanent crew aboard BE FREE is including Gee from Holland. We are now exploring the Pacific Ocean. Even though this is season 5 on YouTube I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I sailed several seasons in the Mediterranean prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway. PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS! I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things that might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore.

In this video we finally get some much needed shade for the Dumpster Dive, Pearl Harbor Navy Dive Work Boat. It's amazing how much bigger and more comfortable the boat feels with our new EZ Corners Pipe Tent. The plan is to build on anther section for the stern, now that we see how the system fits the boat. They work together quite well, in my opinion. How does the pipe tent structure look to you? Maybe its a little "nautical hillbilly," but at least that's an authentic look for our program... Thanks for tuning in. Aloha Joah

LAHAKAI SAILING // ⛵️ S1 Ep53 // PART 2 // We are in the midst of a DIY project, crafting the head for our sailboat. This week we take a dive deep into the engine room (when I say we, it's mostly Kieran, okey only Kieran). I am busy with other things, stay tuned. Kieran spends hours in the small room, taking the engine apart bit by bit. Finally understanding what has caused all our issues with the gearbox. Last step is to remove the engine all together to give it a proper birthday. Hopefully with all this maintenance both the engine and gearbox will run smoothly in the future when we finally put Merewether II back in the water. This life we keep chasing on the ocean is a long way off at the moment but we feel with hard work and the right people behind up we can get there. As we peel the layers back there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel and it could very well be to an ocean sailing paradise haha. We have a couple days until the next owner of the boat arrives and we still have a lot to do. By the way... if you still don't know we sold our boat in Grenada in the Caribbean and we are getting her ready for the new owner. This week we finally installed the amazing valves we have waited for a long time to get our hands on. For some great quality Marelon valves check their website for more information: https://www.forespar.com/marelon-marine-boat-plumbing.shtml Friends in this episode: @SailLife @TeuluTribe Where the boat is: https://spiceislandmarine.com New owner of the boat: expedition_karambak (insta) We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. The last season has been a dream coming true… we are exploring the Brazilian coast with OUR BOAT that we called Odd.. But wait? What happened to the house? Check out our website to know more about it https://www.oddlifecrafting.com/blog We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. Ocean swim for sailing kitten at mysterious tropical Island We live on a sailing boat with our kitten Mocha who is curious about the water around her. If the worst happened and she fell off the boat she needs to know she can make it back to the catamaran safely so while exploring beautiful Tioman Island Mocha went for her first swim. We also explored above and below the surface of the ocean in Tioman spotting an endangered Hawksbill sea turtle while scuba diving, a chameleon while on a jungle walk and the pièce de résistance South East Asia's Rafflesia flower, the worlds largest blooming plant secreted away deep in the jungle on this mysterious island. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #sailingwithcats #diving #rafflesia #TheCruisingKiwis #228
