Boat Life Vlog | Sailing to isolated areas Our first days in Fakarava made us think about the life pace in such remote places. During long walks, bike and dinghy rides we made new friends, found out about the tragical history of the Tuamotu and went for our fist dive (dives are looking very promising around here 🦈🦈 ). Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** The Maldives are famous around the world for their luxury resorts. But what is like to explore one that's abandoned? We sailed to the island of Dholhiyadhoo where a 5-star resort was under construction when the project went bankrupt. Now the island sits empty. Just us and crumbling buildings that are slowly being reclaimed by nature. It felt quite odd, and a bit sad, to be walking around what should have been a beautiful resort but was now a neglected ruin. But an opportunity like this... you don't pass up! Thanks for watching! Going from 4.10 to 4.88 gear ratio was well worth it! The little 2.5-liter engine in our jeep really struggled to hit 55 mph with the 4.10 gears and 32-inch tires. Now after the gear ration changes, the Jeep can easily do 70 mph on the highway in 5th gear. Jeep Gear Change Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9vNnMj1ZmcY1OobKHopgTe7UR3p9u9xx In this video, we hit the trails to find some firewood, still a little chilly here in Florida at night. We start out by going through all the gears then cruising at 30 mph in 5th gear. Once on the trail, we slow things down in 4 low as we show you how slow this jeep can go as it crawls down the trail. Finally, we play in the sandpit, then climb some Florida hills on our search for firewood. Next week we are going to change the gear oil in the diffs and look at the gears. Breakin is done with over 500 miles on theses gears and our install of the ratios is making not gear noise and operating as expected. If you missed the gear change you can go back and look at that. We changed the gears in the DANA 30 and 35 along with the steering stabilizer in previous videos. Thanks again for joining us on our Sojourn through the Caribbean Islands! In this video we find ourselves Sailing to George Town the Cruisers Hub of the Bahmas, leaving Staniel Key in light winds we explain how a few passing squalls preceeding a front can actually help you move the boat. Please remember that a squall in stronger winds can be dangerous if you or your boat are not prepared! We arrive in George Town Exumas Bahamas before sunrise and have to wait for daylight to enter the harbour. In George Town we resupply the boat, check out Stocking Island and the local beaches, and check out the "Rake and Scrape" band for a little bahamian night life! Yes, that man is playing a wood saw! #georgetownbahamas #sailing #liveaboard #sailingchannel #traveladventures #yorkie If you like our videos and want to see more/better videos, more often you can become a patreon supporter: https://www.patreon.com/sailingbalachandra If you haven't yet SUBSCRIBED and wan to see more please click the SUBSCRIBE button above, and be sure to give this video a like! Sailing Balachandra is our YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and my partner Nawal as we navigate the globe. We also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard. A2A - Journey of a Wooden Boat - Episode 101: Pairing an 1800s Thicknesser and a Chrysler Flathead 6
Sometimes, pairing vintage machines, is just cool! When we got the 27 inch thicknesser from Ganon and Benjamin a couple months ago, we knew we were going to have to figure out how to pair it with a bomber power source. In the end, everything came together beautifully! We couldn't use the three phase 10 horsepower motor they had on it as we don't have three phase here at the boat yard and it would have been very challenging for us to even get that hooked up here. So we immediately started thinking about what else we could use. An electric motor was not really going to cut it because we really couldn't get enough juice to something big enough. We had the option of running it off the PTO from the tractor but that would have been extremely impractical. So, we decided to go to an engine! With luck, we ended up getting in contact with someone that had this old Chrysler Flathead 6 that was used to run a pine shingle making operation back in the day. It had been sitting out for a long time but we were pretty sure we could get Grampa and Joe to get her running again. And that they did! Now we have an 1800s era 27 inch thicknesser run by a 1947 Chrysler Flathead 6 that also runs an industrial size fan for chip collection. The whole package in one! We are so excited to put this combo to use soon during our upcoming planking party. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com
SOLD! Congratulations and safe travels to the new owners. Sweet Ride is a widebody #KadeyKrogen44AE. The AE designation is for Advanced Ergonomics. She has just completed major upgrades to hoisting system, cooling system, fresh water system, all sea strainers, navigation electronics, canvas, sound down, carpet and many others (upon request). Her water maker, extensive spares, larger refrigerator and pantry space add to the ability to be self-sufficient in remote areas. Sweet Ride has an excellent layout for an active owner operator couple. The raised pilothouse with flybridge above, both with Stidd helm chairs, provide two options for commanding her underway. The entry level has a comfortable saloon featuring two Ekornes Stressless chairs, L-shaped settee, and an ideal offshore gourmet galley. Ultra-leather upholstery, neutral colored curtains, and Corian counters. Is fixing up an old sailboat with 500 huge, rotten blisters worth the time and money? In this episode, we reflect if it worth doing this blister repair job to our old boat, and how much it cost to do the blister repair, and painting. Should we have just bought a new boat without any hull blisters? Or is any sailboat, old or new, just a treadmill of maintenance and repair? In South Africa, we did a huge resin blister repair job on our 1976, Valiant 40 sailboat, named Brick House, which took months and months, a lot of work, and some cash. We then painted the boat, and made some other cosmetic repairs before launching her to continue sailing around South Africa, and eventually across the South Atlantic. Patrick demonstrates how he finished the blister repair, fared, puttied and sanded, and did a total boat restoration on our old Valiant 40. Step by Step, our sailboat is transformed from an old blistered boat to a gorgeous, smooth, sleek looking yacht! A new boat would be nice...but we there is positive economics with doing work in a foreign country and build equity into our mobile home. Unless someone gives us a nice new Swan 48 that requires no maintenance or upgrades yeah right!) , we will keep up the maintenance on our boat to keep is better than new. We go over what we check when our Jeep was Sputtering and Stalling and how to fix it. Look at the intake and vacuum lines, the fuel system, and the spark plugs for any clear sides of damage. Here we talk and show you what to look for when you pull your plugs out, they can tell you so much about how your jeep is running. When pulling the spark plug it did not look to lean either, the plugs looked worn and needing replacement. After everything was done and it has been driving a while we mark this jeep issue repaired. On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, we venture to the other side of the barrier reef for some offshore fishing in a sailboat! We spend the day learning the basics of offshore fishing from experienced fishermen and enjoy a beautiful day in the Bahamian sunshine to catch our dinner. We were so excited to finally cross this experience off the never-ending list! This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching learning how to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas. There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. We are excited (and a little nervous!) to share this journey with you. We hope that you learn a little from our experiences and maybe inspire you to make changes to live the life you want! ***FILMED IN JUNE 2019*** —————————————————— SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW https://www.sailingonawhim https://www.youtube.com/sailingonawhim https://www.facebook.com/sailingonawhim https://www.instagram.com/sailing_on_a_whim https://www.twitter.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— CONSIDERING BECOMING A PATRON https://www.patreon.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— GEAR: Cannon EOS Rebel SL2 https://amzn.to/2y2Hty1 Cannon Powershot G7x Mark II https://amzn.to/2S6rOVu DJI Mavic Air https://amzn.to/2W2OYgz GoPro Hero5 https://amzn.to/2S8FizU Fantasea Line FG7X II https://amzn.to/2xSuY8q Rode DDG-GO Deadcat https://amzn.to/2Y4AT4G DJI Mavic Pro Plantinum https://amzn.to/3eU5tUT —————————————————— RECOMMENDED READING: Learn to Sail – https://sailingonawhim.com/learn-to-sail Cruising Life – https://sailingonawhim.com/cruising-life Maintenance & Repair – https://sailingonawhim.com/maintenance-%26-repair Inspiration & Adventure – https://sailingonawhim.com/inspiration-%26-adventure —————————————————— MUSIC FROM EPIDEMIC SOUND —————————————————— The Abacos area of the Bahamas was devastated by Hurricane Dorian in September 2019. Using our Sailrite LSZ-1 sewing machine, we make some needed curtains for the port lights in our v-berth with mostly remnant materials. And we manage to stay out of the cat’s way! We're Esther and Michael, a couple with photography and writing backgrounds. We appreciate a good bowl of pho, bourbon, comedians (like Tig Notaro, Eddie Izzard, Maria Bamford...), and corny puns. We're especially interested in living small to gain abundance—cultivating sustainable living habits and having more time for nature and art! And we're learning about ways to 'live small' by reducing our waste footprint on and off the boat! Part 2 of our recap video! We have gone through so much since the last recap video that we couldn't fit it all into one episode. From figuring out how to build bronze floor timbers, to saying goodbye to Victoria. A new engine to making sawn frames. And finally, starting to plank. It has been so much work. The work is what we love though. We are continually learning something new. When making the bronze floors, we needed to work with a material we had never worked with before. Then taking apart Victoria taught us so much about the construction of boats and what we should pay attention to. Be it a proper way to do things or things to avoid. There are so many examples of this that we couldn't name them all here. So, here is a quick jaunt back through time to experience these little moments condensed into one video. Hopefully these get you just as excited for what is yet to come. We know we are! Thank you all for the support and we are so happy to have you on this journey with us. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you like what you just saw and want to support this project in order to assure we can make more videos of the journey, please consider becoming a Patron and donating as little or as much as you want. Sailing Eleuthera. Passing Current Cut. Boat engine maintenance in Cape Eleuthera Marina. From the unique Spanish Wells we motored through the famous Current Cut, with its extreme tidal current, onto the bank on the west side of Eleuthera peninsula. Over the next few days, we hopped all the way down the west side of the peninsula, anchored in several interesting bays in the wonderful sheltered lee of the north-south elongated peninsula. Then we again had to run for cover. We found shelter in the rather expensive Cape Eleuthera Marina where we stayed two days and serviced Volvo, ran an anticalc raw water engine flush, repaired the mainsail, did the laundry and gave Cloudy Bay a clean and polish. Busy but productive days. Then finally headed to our original Bahamas destination, the Exuma Islands. 14-19 Jan 2020
Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** Our Maldivian adventures continue with a bit of a look into the darker side of cruising the Maldives: the bureaucracy. After waiting a week for our cruising permit to come back, we were now faced with the task of getting diesel. Should be simple enough, right? Well, not when a new two day old form is required that no one knows how to fill out or even who should fill it out! Fortunately, before this all happened we did get a taste of why you come sail the Maldives. We made a stop in at Utheemu, made a new friend and got to visit the Palace of the first Sultan of the Maldives. The wind was calm, so we took advantage and explored an extremely deep anchorage, snorkeling, flying the drone and enjoying a delicious treat. As with all things in the cruising life, you have to take the good with the bad! Thanks for watching! (Footage from April 2019) Curious for more up to date info on where we are and what we're doing? How do Liveaboard Sailors spend Winter in the Med? Cruising Family Life in Mediterranean Marina Ep63
#boatkids #oppieboat #kidshavingfun #spain Life in a marina in winter isn't much fun - even if it is in the Mediterranean. We're spending our second winter in Almerimar after our attempts to sail the Atlantic last season were thwarted by maintenance and health issues. So we put the kids in a local bi-lingual school and slowly worked our way through our maintenance list. There were plenty of parties and BBQs with our fellow live-aboard cruisers between the storms and Santa even brought us wetsuits in time for a Christmas day swim... oh, and an Optimist Dinghy for the kids! A trip to Benidorm and a visit from a Spanish galleon made for a VERY enjoyable Christmas and New Year break, but it's now back to the grind before the new season begins! This week I have been on a one day course to learn some real basic marine diesel engine maintenance, followed up by an overdue pressure wash of the decks. Then for a little light relief, I managed to get a day in sea kayaking with a mate in our local waters

Progress is being made on Arabella every day, but that last time we checked in on what we have done up to now was about two and a half years ago. We felt that a recap of the last couple of years, to see all the work that has been done, would be a really fun trip down memory lane while we get ready for the planking party we have scheduled in a couple of weeks. So much has happened in the last couple of years that we actually had to divide it into two parts! We went from a bare keel timber to a framed boat in less than a year! All while recording and providing videos of the progress (not a small feat in and of itself!). We are so proud to see her standing where she is now and ready to be planked. Seeing everything that has gone into that process is really a fantastic feeling. From laying the keel to building up the bow and stern timbers, to pouring the lead keel and getting the molds stood up and frames bent in, there is a lot to go over. We hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane as much as we have and that this gets you just as excited to see what is to come! Thank you all for the support we have received and we are very thankful to have you all along for the journey!
