This week we. have a non boat. DIY project in store. Since we bought this house we let the girls. each pick. their own bedroom sets. We looked at a lot of them and Swab liked the bunk beds that had a staircase going up to them instead of a ladder you climb. We must have looked at 20 different ones, and then she found one she liked without a bed on the bottom, it is a cottage play area but did not have a staircase to the bed. We got it and within a month of having it she said she wished she had the one with the stairs because climbing up the ladder isn't fun in the middle of the night. As the one that tucks her in most nights, I tend to agree. So we decided to build a set of stairs for it using simple materials that will look great and match the overall look and feel. I also told her it would have colored lights built into it so she can light up the steps whatever color she wants. This video explains what we are going to do, shows the current setup, materials and the first part of getting the rough parts cut out for assembly. In the next video we should be able to finish the build and hopefully paint and light them. If not, that may be a 3rd episode. We finally get to use our dive compressor and SCUBA setup to do a little drift dive! When everyone says the water in Bahamas is so clear, its absolutely true. I don't believe we have had such amazing viability. This dive was particularly exciting with a 5kt current carrying us along the ocean floor in an effortless pace. After watching a huge submarine being towed on the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth Virginia we jump on our sailboat. Everyone back home has talked so much about this moment. The start of the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) in Norfolk Virginia. This long stretch of protected waterways runs all the way South to Florida. And here you have to decide if you want to go around the Virginia cut or enter the Great Dismal Swamp Canal. We heard many warnings saying how it wasn't a very deep canal and how the duckweed was extremely thick in areas. However we also heard how some people had made it through and how breathtaking it was. So we decided to take that turn and enjoy the Dismal Swamp Park and it's beauty which came with a very eventful day or days should I say. The best laid schemes o' mice an' men... Well, we had quite the plans for the planking party and though we did get some accomplished, in the end they did go 'awry'. Our plan was to continue planking as we were and hoped that we could have a team scarfing planks while two others were working in the boathouse hanging them. In theory, we felt one could keep up with the others. However, right before we started, we were encouraged to put in stealers to make up a bit of distance to the sheer in the aft end, and this meant that we needed to put in a 'funky' plank above them to match. It turned out, this plank was much more work than we anticipated. This paired with some uncooperative cedar planks, which kept breaking on us, meant that much of the 'hanging planks' part of the party came to a crawl. This compounded with the threat of COVID19, meant that we ultimately decided to shut down the operation and send the team home to be safe. It wasn't all a bust though. Winch cleaning is preventative maintenance work needs to get done, particularly considering that you probably have a lot of money invested in your boat’s winches. For perspective, the chances are that the value of your compliment of winches on 30 to 40-foot boat equals the cost of your engine. Protect that investment with annual cleaning and lubricating and your winches will continue to reward you with reliable performance season after season. The work isn’t hard, and some find it therapeutic. If you do this job once a year, all you need is some old T-shirts to wipe all the parts clean. If the old grease has hardened from years of neglect, the gunk can be loosened by spraying it with WD40 or by soaking parts in fresh diesel fuel. If you do use a solvent, make sure to wipe it all off your cleaned parts before re-greasing making sure to clean each tooth on every gear. Don’t worry about not being able to remember how to put the parts back together, take solace in the fact that most winches come in pairs – port and starboard. As long as you don’t take both apart at the same time, you can always use the other winch as a guide. Pro tip: when disassembling the winch, have a clean, clear surface on which you can place each piece your remove in the sequence right to left as you remove it. Then, to reassemble the cleaned parts, simply go put them back in using the reverse order.

We've had issues with our engine since we first broke down in Penkridge last summer (see our second vlog) and while there some parts that need replacing, the main cause of our problem seems to have been water in the fuel. In this vlog we check our diesel tank for water and.other nasties like the dreaded diesel bug using a pump to extract the red diesel and the residue from the bottom. We're no diesel bug experts, that's for sure! In this sailing video we leave the anchorage at Thompson Bay Long Island Bahamas to travel north to Staniel Cay Bahamas to begin our journey home to Bsoton early in light of covid-19 and concerns about border closures or other unexpected events. Before leaving, Pierre sets a second anchor because of predicted high winds. The next day we start out on a beautiful sail, encounter squalls, and anchor north of Staniel Cay just at sunset. We travel to a more isolated anchorage the next day. Protective DIY face masks made in preparation for arriving home were created with materials available on a sailboat in this "how to" video. The masks are easy to make and have a lining to prevent/reduce virus penetration. The face masks are made with material that sailors and cruisers may already have on board their boats. Small bunge cord can be used for elastic, if there is not sewing elastic available. I made these masks while in lockdown in Bahamas so that we would have masks ready when we arrived in the USA from Bahamas. While we have a couple N95 masks used for working with dusty or toxic material on the boat,they are well used and not appropriate for arriving in the USA where face masks are now in widespread use. Using the mask in the Bahamas before we left was much appreciated in the grocery stores. By wearing a mask, you let others know you care about their health as well as yours when you shop. Update: I have modified the masks to sew two pipe cleaners inside along the top for a better seal. The metal strip from a large bag of coffee also works. One year Review of TruGreen service, so what did we like and dislike about their service. We tried other things before calling TruGreen like Scott's 3 -n- 1 for dollar weeds, and Kentucky Blue Grass to try to get rid of dollar weeds and fill bare spots. TruGreen so far has been the best for getting rid of Dollar Weeds, but the quality of the service changes every service because of employees either doing a great job or not so great.
