In this episode, we build a wooden 'A' frame, to use as a basic crane to remove our mast. We also take the opportunity to remove some of the old ugly, sagging head liner inside the boat when the weather turns bad.

After a few last minute projects and stocking up the boat with water we attempt our longest Passage. We finally get the right weather window to cross from Sandy Hook to Cape May on the Atlantic Ocean along the New Jersey Coast line. In this video we take you through the process of fitting our teak floors on our Island Spirit 38’ catamaran. It took about 2 weeks over all to get it in. It was quite a long process of mistakes and learning, but at the end of the day it was put down and looks great. Teak would not be our number one choice of flooring due to the fact that it is such a high maintenance and easily damaged flooring but it was already part of the materials that came with the yacht. We think it looks beautiful but worry about long term wear on it. For now we have started taking off our shoes whereas before we stomped around the yacht in our shoes - not worried about damaging anything because it was on fiberglass. We take you to our storage unit and show you where we go for our morning runs. Our videos are about 2 - 3 weeks behind the current time and as everyone knows Covid-19 has hit South Africa with a bang. Lock down for South Africa starts tonight March 26th at midnight. Luckily for us staying at the Mykonos marina we are the only live aboards and the other yacht owners have been told to stay at their primary residences and will not be allowed on their yachts. Boats and their problems! Last week we found a leak on our boat and now we fixed it but we found another problem while fixing the first problem!!! We are a Brazilian couple that have bought a 44ft steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200). The idea is to bringing her back to life after 22 years abandoned on the hard. But ultimately we still plan to go to Grenada for hurricane season, unless the situation gets worst. Then we may just head to the USVI’s or Florida. In this episode, I had a good day, no, in fact I had a great day!! We installed a new water pump, we caught up with our provisioning, we finally got our hard drives back! and we were fortunate enough to speak at a workshop hosted by the famous John and Tadji Kretschmer - the workshop was titled sailing to, from and within the Caribbean. With the boat lifting onto the hardstand last week we commence our boat works which predominately included doing some repairs around the prop shaft, sanding back the keel removing rust spots and filling and fairing, epoxy, prime underneath and finish off with some anti foul. While we were doing all this we replaced all our sea cocks with glass composite Tru Design. Losing the ability to steer a sailboat can quickly become a nightmare. We once assisted a sailboat in distress, SV Avatar, mid Pacific to try to fabricate a temporary rudder at sea, and its not something that you want to ever do. Every sailboat needs a good rudder system inspection, before crossing a big ocean, but there are parts of a rudder that are supposed to be hermetically sealed. So Patrick rips apart the rudder on this sailboat, inspects the rudder, and does a partial rudder repair/rudder rebuilt to this old sailboat. Despite our rudder looking fine on the outside, in this episode, Patrick rips open the rudder of our Valiant 40 sailboat, to inspect the condition of the spline to shaft attachments to make sure this rudder will survive another ocean crossing and well beyond. He is happy with what he sees, but he has some welding done between the spline and the rudder shaft, and then builds it back up with polystyrene balls and Cenolite in epoxy. The build up is continued using 1708 cloth and fairing compound. Now, this rudder is stronger and better than when it first left the Valiant factory in 1976. We put on this basic blacksmithing course in Costa Rica with the help of our friends and in conjunction with El Astillero Verde with the hopes of making a difference in the community down there. It was a very rewarding trip on many different levels. In this video we are wrapping up that trip. The course went over so well and the best part was hearing from everyone that took the course saying that not only did they enjoy it, but that they would be keeping up with it and bringing it back to their communities. This was the whole point of the course in the first place, and we never would have been able to pull it off without the help of our friends. Not only did the course go over well but while we were at the shipyard, our crew was able to tackle a couple different projects, including fixing up the student built boat there. Due to the drying conditions at certain times of the year there, the planking had significantly dried up and the seams had opened up, making it unusable. Kit Macchi and Anne Bryant reefed all the seems, installed splines and then Kit double planked the bottom of the vessel to help with any future issues, while Anne and Andrew Guest (from Restoring Rosalind) caulked the boat back up again. It was a tough problem to solve with the time given, the resources and the rough Costa Rican environment but they did an amazing job. We also got to see a lot of work get done on the building on the Ceiba while we were at the shipyard, which is just an incredible project. Not only is the scale impressive but so is the concept of the work and change she is to bring about once on the water. Getting to see such a massive ship coming together was a real treat and we can't wait to see her on the water. Meanwhile, this trip likely would not have gone the way it did without the all of Steve's hard work. After organizing the majority of this trip, he ended up taking one for the team, staying home to get our new thicknesser up and running for our upcoming planking party. We discussed this long and hard but in the long run, he convinced me that I needed to go to Costa Rica to get footage while he wrenched on the machinery here and got things ready. In the end, we are a team and sometimes we need to divide and conquer. At least he got to get out on a quick climbing trip locally. We hope you enjoy this next installment. This was by far the scariest moment our our sailing adventure. With gusts of over 60 knots and a full 180 degree spin we started dragging anchor during a Category 1 Storm. We later found out that what we experienced in Atlantic Highlands was a Bomb Cyclone which also affected New York City. I was terrified and so stressed that we didn't film as much as we wished. But we're still so happy with our Mantus Anchor which ended up holding us in place even though the wind was stronger than what it's meant to work in. We get the maintenance done on 'Town Fox' and then transfer ourselves back onboard for a couple of months of cruising. We spend a couple of weeks in the Hauraki Gulf in Auckland before sailing to Tauranga. Then we leave and sail north visiting Great Mercury and Great Barrier Islands. Dan takes over the video and editing duties and starts making all the music in GarageBand! We are a family of six who are taking some time out of normal life to travel. We’ve pulled the kids from school and are home schooling while on the road and the water. We spend time aboard our 34ft sailing boat in NZ and have bought a motorhome in Europe so as to tour the other side of the world. We’re keeping our memories on video here and the kids write narration and play guitars so we have music to use in the videos.

Jupiter² was built in the Philippines by an Australian designer for Jamie. During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. But his life dream is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China, where they were both working. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie loved about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time. When locked down in Cape Town South Africa we had the spare time to start putting together some videos that we wanted to share with our family and friends. Cruising the world and life onboard, is pretty difficult to describe to people verbally. Making videos about this lifestyle help them understand why we love it. This was the beginning of our sailing channel. The early footage was never intended to entertain, or enlighten, so the early vids are a bit of a patchwork. From South Africa onwards, we actually started filming with intent. Although with only the bare equipment, namely an iPhone and a go pro. We would love to get some better gear to improve our production quality, but due to planet Earth still being in lockdown and our cruising in remote locations, we’ve been unable to even buy a tripod! Soon, we hope. Jamie has spent decades working towards this dream of cruising around the world on a sailboat. However, it was not his only dream. Whilst being raised by a single mum on a single parents pension he would dream of becoming an astronaut! After finishing high school, and realising there is very limited opportunities for space travel growing up in country Australia (whom have no space program!), he got his first job in a factory, and focused his energy on the next best thing….. Flying. After a chance joy flight with a friend, Jamie found a new passion and with his factory job, managed to pay for one flying lesson per week. After 6 years he had all the qualifications to fly professionally. However, finding that first job is the real challenge. That came in the outback Australian township of Mt Isa, starting out on a four seater, Cessna 172 flying teachers, doctors, politicians and local aboriginals to wherever they needed to go. His career now spans nearly 30 years and having flown and commanded both Boeing and Airbus heavy jets around the world he now had the chance to fulfil his sailing dreams. He found the right design vessel, had it built and saved up a kitty. He also found the right girl! Finally it was time. UNTIE THE LINES I hope that our videos inspire other dreamers to reach out, focus and obtain your dreams. Hopefully some inspiration to "Quit Job and Go Sailing". Life is not supposed to be about just getting by. I find it ridiculous to spend your life paying off a mortgage just so that at the end of if, you have somewhere to live. We look at the bite pattern on the ring gears to make sure the ring and pinion bite pattern is good, then we check the oil we drained for metal. Well, it's finally that time! Our trip to Costa Rica has come. We've been planning on this for a long time. Unfortunately, things didn't pan out for both of us to go. So Steve stayed back to get us ready for our planking party and I travelled down with Jack, Kit, Anne and Andrew to then meet up with Med for the basic blacksmithing course we planned to put on. We've put a lot of energy into making this happen and it felt really good to finally be putting that plan into motion. We also could not have pulled this off without the help of everyone involved. Not only did Jack and Med pull off a great class, but we had so much help from everyone to get ready. I can't name everyone here but thank you to everyone at the shipyard, especially Dylan and Mariel for the planning, charcoal making and translation! On top of the course there was so much going on at the shipyard. We watched a frame go up right after we arrived, which was really impressive to see everyone working together to make such big pieces go into places with what seemed so little effort. In this week’s episode, we capture a few intimate moments about living in a boatyard, sanding successes, botched repairs, and possibly a YouTube first with an onboard mini-split ac unit. The Successes: - Amanda was able to sand the entire inside of one hull this last week, having a total of about 10 man-hours! - We were able to remove the tarp from the cabin. - The AC unit kept up on a near 90 degree day! - Fixed the shower with a headband. The Fails: - John miscalculated the panel repair from our last episode and had to cut part of it to try again. - One of the windows wasn’t completely sealed and leaked on the bed during a storm, and almost happened a second time before we sealed it. - John bought the wrong size angle grinder pads . . . again! More on the AC: So we decided to put a mini-split ac unit on our boat for several reasons, a few including: - Extreme efficiency, our unit (22 Seer Pioneer 12000BTU 110v mini-split) draws about 360W on it’s max cooling setting . . . NICE! Other portable AC units can use as much as 1200W, which would force us to run a generator daily to bridge the difference in our solar production. - Portability, which is really important when you do not know what the final layout of your space will be. In our case, we may chose to move the AC to a completely different part of the boat before we finish, which would not work for a marine AC system. - DIY Friendly and takes less than a day to put together, pretty self-explanatory. - Noise, there is none! The indoor and outdoor units are almost completely silent, the ‘quiet’ refrigerator makes more noise. - Dehumidifies, like a lot! Having an old wood boat, humidity is a super big ‘no no’. This unit has done an incredible job keeping things dry, even with massive holes in the side of our boat. So far, we are extremely happy with how this unit performs. Though it looks unsightly now, we will likely be building it into the outdoor section, making the outdoor unit nearly invisible. The lines running across the wall on the inside will be concealed by cabinets in the future, leaving only the stylish head unit. As for the power, we are pretty confident that this 12000BTU unit will cool our 11x11 cabin without struggle, even with all windows open on a 90+ degree days. During the nights, we believe that the unit will be able to cool inside the hulls reasonably well with assisted circulation. All that said, there is just no tradeoff on the power consumption. The unit pulls as little as 50W when a stable temperature has been reached, and no more than around 950W on ‘turbo’ mode. The unit can cool our entire cabin 15-20 degrees in 10-15 minutes, which is awesome! The fact that we still have massive holes in the side of our boat, and even leaving the cabin door open, this unit still keeps up and does it’s job. We have no idea how this unit will hold up in a maritime environment, but even planning for a short lifetime, it is a well worth investment for us and we look forward to sharing updates on it’s performance at sea! On this Episode of Sailing on a Whim, we head south through the Abacos and check out the other side of island life by exploring beaches, spending time with friends on the hook, and reuniting with civilization. We learn that it may be better in the Bahamas but, as they say, it's gooder in Guana, especially on a Sunday... This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching learning how to sail, buying a boat, outfitting her, and how to take off for a life on the open seas. There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share everything we have learned and have some fun along the way.
