Patrick Childress discusses fixing our blister repair, step by step, on our sailboat Brick House, a 1976 Valiant 40, of the blister era fiberglass boats that developed blisters when the fiberglass resin did not set up properly causing not osmosis blisters, but, "resin blisters". These are blisters in the fiberglass that have become not just cosmetic, but quite possibly structural blisters. He discusses the peel job for blister repair that was done 19 years ago and why a peel job would not work to remove these blisters long term on our sailboat. He demonstrates our blister repair job starting with what he did to open up the blisters on our sailboat, and how he decided how deep to go in to each blister. He shows how the blisters were rebuilt up with fiberglass cloth and resin, sanded, puttied and fared, and finished off, and why washing the boat every day was important too to dry it out and prepare it for rebuilding each blistered area. This is part 1 in a 2 part DIY blister repair video. Repairing our sailboat to continue sailing around the world, requires a lot of sailboat maintenance, constantly, and Patrick Childress goes boldly in this sailboat refit for 10 months straight, with very few days off to have fun! This is a video to watch if you want to understand not just the ups, but also the downs of sailboat ownership and boat life! ▬▬ FOLLOW ALONG! ▬▬ ✩Instagram: http://www.Instagram.com/svBrickHouse ✩ Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/SYBrickhouse ✩ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/SVBrickhouse ✩Our blog: :http://www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com ✩Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/PatrickChildress ✩Tshirts and other: https://www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com/store Support us to keep the videos coming: Tip Jar : http://whereisbrickhouse.com/tip-jar/ TWO FREE SAILING COURSES: http://whereisbrickhouse.com/sailing-school PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/SVBrickHouse Start your Amazon shopping here: https://amzn.to/2K9MmuA ✩Tshirts and other: https://www.WhereIsBrickHouse.com/store #sailingAfrica #PatrickChildressSailing #TravelsAnimals Music Credits Islandesque by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1100315 Artist: http://incompetech.com/ Santo Rico by Twin Musicom is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Artist: http://www.twinmusicom.org/

On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, we start living the Bahamas life by taking advantage of everything the islands have to offer by diving, catching conch, and…pizza? Along the way we make some lifelong friends and acquire a vast amount of knowledge about living off the ocean by learning how to catch, clean, and prepare our own food. So far, this Bahamas Life is AH-MAZING! This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching learning how to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas. There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. We are excited (and a little nervous!) to share this journey with you. We hope that you learn a little from our experiences and maybe inspire you to make changes to live the life you want! ***FILMED IN JUNE 2019*** —————————————————— SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW https://www.sailingonawhim https://www.youtube.com/sailingonawhim https://www.facebook.com/sailingonawhim https://www.instagram.com/sailing_on_a_whim https://www.twitter.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— CONSIDERING BECOMING A PATRON https://www.patreon.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— GEAR: Cannon EOS Rebel SL2 - https://amzn.to/2y2Hty1 Cannon Powershot G7x Mark II - https://amzn.to/2S6rOVu DJI Mavic Air - https://amzn.to/2W2OYgz GoPro Hero5 - https://amzn.to/2S8FizU Fantasea Line FG7X II - https://amzn.to/2xSuY8q Rode DDG-GO Deadcat - https://amzn.to/2Y4AT4G DJI Mavic Pro Plantinum - https://amzn.to/3eU5tUT —————————————————— RECOMMENDED READING: Learn to Sail – https://sailingonawhim.com/learn-to-sail Cruising Life – https://sailingonawhim.com/cruising-life Maintenance & Repair – https://sailingonawhim.com/maintenance-%26-repair Inspiration & Adventure – https://sailingonawhim.com/inspiration-%26-adventure —————————————————— MUSIC FROM EPIDEMIC SOUND —————————————————— The Abacos area of the Bahamas was devastated by Hurricane Dorian in September 2019. WELCOME TO SEASON 1! Even though this is not the beginning of our struggle, we invite you to one of the most in-depth refits happening on YouTube. Having only done a handful of work prior on this boat project, this is an awesome opportunity to see the full build process on our 1962 CSK Catamaran. This episode covers a little about the beginnings of our most recent project, refitting a sailing catamaran as a liveaboard for under $50k. We recently pulled it out of the water to prevent it from sinking and have a lot of work to do. Other topics covered include our quest to find the best method to removing 50 year old bottom paint, like sanding, sandblasting, paint strippers, and more! We also talk a little about hull repair, woodwork, rib repair and more. Sanding strategies tried in this episode: - Citrus Strip, worked, but was not cost effective. - Aqua Strip, didn't work too well, comparable to Citrus Strip but more expensive. - Jasco Paint Remover (spray), worked the best of all products for us. - Jasco Paint Remover (gel), was least effective . . . fancy that. - Angle Grinder, a possible solution, but damages the fiberglass too much. - Sanding only, sucks. It can be done, but takes too many man hours. Woodworking strategies in this episode: - Gorilla Glue Wood Glue, works very well. Not waterproof or submersible, but held under pressure for about 48 hours submersed before failing. - Bondo Epoxy Filler, works very well in the joints to seal and protect the repairs. For those that missed the Season 1 Preview, you can find it here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXnaM_UnX44 For those that have asked, YES, we will be releasing a 'Prequel'! What we didn't know was how incredibly friendly the people would be! We arrived into Uligan to complete our clearances and the people on the island welcomed us like long lost family. They hosted us in their homes for Maldivian feasts and personal roti making lessons. To help celebrate Amy and my anniversary, they organized a beach barbeque with fresh caught fish. Talk about an incredible welcome! In between all this socializing, we did manage to find some time to get out and snorkel some of the most crystal clear waters we'd ever seen. In the last episode, we started to work on getting ready to change the roof on the boathouse. After a visit from the local building inspector a little while ago, we were told that we needed to replace the plastic we have with a membrane that is at least fire retardant. So that's what we did as well as strengthened our structure a lot more as well. The last trusses were just straight from the walls to the peak and did not shed the snow very well. On top of that, the cable we had up wasn't very tight and sagged in the middle. So, we beefed up the entire thing with a new pole at the end of the boathouse and used 5/8th inch elevator cable for all the connections. This gave us a very strong and tight ridge line. With that up, we put up the bow shed trusses that we built in the house the other week. These bowed trusses will give us a much steeper angle for the roof and help shed the snow much better, as well as give us a lot more room! None of this was easy work and took about a week to pull off! So, we hope you enjoy this week of tough work condensed into a twenty minute video! haha --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sea Dreamer project: https://www.youtube.com/user/scott2640 Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.
I catch some fish and tackle a few more projects this week. New companion way doors, fenders, solar parts, and fins. I also dive into the motor and get familiar with changing, belts, impellers, filters and oil. On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, we find paradise on an island in the Abacos of the Bahamas. Blue water, amazing people, and lots of new adventures. We never knew places like this really existed but we definitely found paradise! **This episode was filmed in May 2019** —————————————————— SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW https://www.sailingonawhim https://www.youtube.com/sailingonawhim https://www.facebook.com/sailingonawhim https://www.instagram.com/sailing_on_a_whim https://www.twitter.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— CONSIDERING BECOMING A PATRON https://www.patreon.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— GEAR: Cannon EOS Rebel SL2 - https://amzn.to/2y2Hty1 Cannon Powershot G7x Mark II - https://amzn.to/2S6rOVu DJI Mavic Air - https://amzn.to/2W2OYgz GoPro Hero5 - https://amzn.to/2S8FizU Fantasea Line FG7X II - https://amzn.to/2xSuY8q Rode DDG-GO Deadcat - https://amzn.to/2Y4AT4G DJI Mavic Pro Plantinum - https://amzn.to/3eU5tUT —————————————————— RECOMMENDED READING: Learn to Sail – https://sailingonawhim.com/learn-to-sail Cruising Life – https://sailingonawhim.com/cruising-life Maintenance & Repair – https://sailingonawhim.com/maintenance-%26-repair Inspiration & Adventure – https://sailingonawhim.com/inspiration-%26-adventure —————————————————— MUSIC FROM EPIDEMIC SOUND —————————————————— The Abacos area of the Bahamas was devastated by Hurricane Dorian in September 2019. Prout has a proven track record of making great cruising catamarans, capable of offshore cruising. Although small, this boat is no exception and I'd still have to say her interior space is more comparable to that of a 38 or 40 foot monohull. Is this boat a worthwhile project? We think so. Welcome back on board everyone after you’ve needed to have a bit of patience since our last full episode! This time join us on our bluewater sailing adventures from Viana do Castelo along the Portuguese coast until Portimão. Here we did some maintenance work on board with some unexpected surprises and explored the scenic limestone landscape of the Algarve. Numerous dolphin and bonito pods then joined us on our longest trip of 538nm to the Canary Islands. Be ready for some magical ocean blues at sea!

In August of 2017 I sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is our YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and my partner Nawal as we navigate the globe. We also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard in a cold climate.

One Year Tankless Water Heater Review and we still love it. After a year of using our tankless water heater, we are going to go over what we think the Pros and Cons are comparing it to a tank water heater. Most of our cons are not really cons to most people, we just like to live as frugal as possible. In this video on our tankless water heater, we go over power usage, maintenance, and things we have noticed in the year of using it. The only thing we have noticed as far as having hot water in our home is that there is a lot more of it. With the hot water this tankless water heater produces comes with things like endless showers, power washing with hot water, hotter water for less electricity for cleaner dishes, and the list goes on. Also, be sure to check out our other blogs and videos on this heater before you replace your hot water heater. Whilst the boat is lifted we also complete a few of the basic maintenance jobs such as sanding, painting and skin fittings in order to get the boat back in the water and continue our journey south. The weather is calm so we decide to move Nutshell off her first mooring and on to a sturdier, more permanent one, so that we can carry out the boat jobs in relative safety. Magnus builds a mock up for our roof top tent for our land based travel within Australia. It’s something that he has been working on for quite some time and now it is going to come to life! Let the big boat job begin! The gearbox finally comes out after the removal of many, many hoses all attached with multinational fittings. Thanks for following along with our journey and, of course, thanks for watching, and especially, thanks for subscribing, liking and sharing. These extra things help us out a great deal. Until next time… Wendy and Magnus ______ Where are we now: http://sailingnutshell.com/where-are-we/ If you’d like to keep us moving and support us you can become a Patron for as little as $1 per month. https://www.patreon.com/lifeinanutshell Be up to date with what we’re up to and where we are. We have had a lot going on here at the boatyard. With having to revamp the roof due to the new building inspector in town, to getting the new thicknesser up and running, to getting the last oak planks on the boat before we leave for Costa Rica. We manage to get most of that done. In order to accomplish all this though, we have to go through some of the steps. One of which is getting the trusses made for the new roof. Not an easy task in the middle of winter in New England! With all of this going on, we still had to work on the oak plank we started to hang because we can't leave it sitting while we are gone in Costa Rica for two weeks. So, Alix, Keira and Steve go through the usual process of getting the plank on and off the boat over and over again in order to get it to fit. Which, also includes a bit more steaming to get the most curvy parts to fit properly. With all that done... there's nothing stopping us from tearing old roof off the boathouse... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

Following Simon Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/finding_simon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/findingsimon Website: http://simonstiles.com/ Asking Simon - Who are you?
We have been spending time at a marina in Ensenada mexico and doing a lot of maintenance on the Nordhavn 56 Motorsailer. We spend 2 months in the boat yard recently where we did some major maintenance on our running gear, as well as a few smaller projects and fresh antifouling paint. We will publish a long video showing all of our work in the yard soon. This video will hopefully be the first of a series of very short videos where we document a single maintenance task. In this one, we show how we overhauled our all chain anchor rode. When we bought the boat, the chain was completely rusted because the anchor locker drain had been clogged so the anchor was sitting immersed in salt water for a long period of time. It was also 10 years old so the galvanizing probably wore off with use. Replacing the galvanized chain would have cost approximately $3500 USD, so we looked into a way to refurbish the existing chain. We found a galvanizing shop in San Diego that said hey could re-plate the chain for about $700 so we took this option. After getting the chain back from the shop, we painted depth markers on the chain and re-installed it on the boat and we show that process as well. ______________________________________________________________________________________ This Video Is Made Possible By Our Amazing Fans!
