In Grenada we waste no time in taking a tour of the entire island stopping to enjoy waterfalls, an extinct volcano and wild mona monkeys! Well, we had to do just that after finally deciding to replace our old NMEA 0183, B&G transducers and dials with Raymarine NMEA2000 transducers and the I70 multifunction display from the Raymarine T70216 Pack. We didn't want to drill any more holes in the hull, so the original through-hull seemed the best place to install the new transducer. However, installation meant first removing the old 45mm plastic housing and widening the hole by 5mm to make way for the 50mm housing to fit a multi function 'Airmar intelligent tri' speed / depth / temperature transducer. A fibreglass conical 'mount' or wedge also had to be made for the hull of the boat to hold it parallel to the sea bed. In the next maintenance blog (pt02) I swap out the old B&G mast head unit, for the Raymarine short arm wind vane transducer. The new daggerboard arrives and we install it before leaving on a car trip to Canada to visit family. The Canadian border is closed, and returning citizens, must quarantine for 14 days. During our quarantine at Stoney Lake Ontario in the Kawartha resion, we reflect on the work we have done since taking possession of BioTrek one year ago, and compare that with work we did on catamarans that we purchased as used boats. All boats require constant maintenance and our used boats required much more work to bring them up to our offshore cruising standards. Remove our Jeep carpet, got to reduce the noise, cut the floor heat, thought we would try Boom Mat. The first thing we had to do was get the carpet out of the jeep and a lot of cleaning, Goo Gone worked great for that. Goo Gone pulled up all the carpet padding glue left on the jeep floor giving us a clean surface to paint on. Once the floor had the Glue and Goo off, we still had to get the oil off left by, Dawn dish soap worked great for this. latest review on how the Boom Mat is holding up. https://youtu.be/5A_uWb7nPiU Now that our Jeep Wrangler floor is clean we are ready to start spraying the Boom Mat on. Of course here in Florida, we had a little battle with mosquitoes but as soon as we started spraying they went away. The Boom Mat sprayed on very easy, only requiring 3 cans to cover the floor of the jeep and drying to touch in 30 minutes. Not to get dry enough to put the jeep together was another story. The Boom Mat did not like the humidity in Florida, plus we over sprayed in a few spots on the Jeep floor, it took 7 days before we wanted to put the interior back in. The results of the Boom Mat were great, and the look was awesome with the Bedliner look for the Jeep floor. The Boom Mat felt just as tough as spray Bedliner yet had great sound deading properties. The road noise was reduced also improving the sound of our subwoofer in the Jeep. The heat from the Jeep floor also felt cooler while driving down the road as well. We would use this product again and our thinking about trying it on our truck doors to improve sound there. Hope this helped you with your choice for a sound deading, heat insolating product. 24 juillet, l’idée de mon capitaine est de stopper avant Dar Es Salam. Il a repéré deux endroits potentiellement convenables pour la nuit, mais pour avoir le temps de s’y arrêter et de repartir si les mouillages sont tangueurs, il faut se lever tôt… Au milieu de l’insondable obscurité, Black Lion patiente, nous aussi ! Nous sommes réveillés depuis trente minutes mais les pêcheurs avec leurs loupiottes au large sont encore trop nombreux pour nous risquer à une navigation dans la noirceur de cette période quotidienne. Patients, devant notre petit déjeuner, nous attendons l’aube. Dans la lumière du soleil levant qui commence à blanchir, la grand-voile est hissée, mais l’aurore reste pâle, le ciel semble voilé d’une nappe sableuse et les mouvements incessants de l’onde matinale me rende nauséeuse ! Pendant que Cyril affine les réglages de sa voile préférée, attention interro surprise… c’est laquelle ? des gaz stomacaux m’indisposent et je sens que le cabotage va être houleux ! Tchoupi avait vu juste, la protection de Shungu-Mbili ne nous permet pas de nous en approcher, tant qu’à Nororo, encore plus Nord-Ouest de Mafia ce n’est vraiment pas mieux. Avec 20-25 nœuds de vent en permanence, si nous avons fait les 18 milles qui nous séparaient de Kilindoni en deux heures trente-cinq, afin d’éviter de nous transformer en Shaker de bananas, nous oublions les deux heures d’escale que nous espérions nous octroyer pour snorkeler ! Sous le vent de Mafia, au portant, les mouvements de Black Lion reposent mon estomac, et sur une eau couleurs savane, entre 7 et 8 nœuds notre Blacky file vers notre roue de secours, Kwale island ! Prise de ris, Gennack affalé, Foc envoyé, virement bâbord, Nord-Ouest toutes, au travers, le galop accélère, 8…9 …12 nœuds, je suis rincée et mon capitaine écroulé sous ses rires ! Il vient de serrer un peu plus le vent juste dans le but de me revivifier d’eau de mer bien salée ! Le brun soutenu du flot nous rappelle les eaux de Bornéo ou encore celles du détroit de Malacca où comme ici, dans trois mètres de fond, le bleu de Blacky tranche sans nuances. Ancrés à un demi mille de l’île, nous jaugions notre abri suave, mais c’était sans considérer le courant additionné à ce vent soutenu qui ne semble pas vouloir se calmer ! Nous sommes une fois de plus, le seul voilier. Alentour, quelques boutres et un chalut certainement dédier pour la pêche à la crevette, le lieu s’y prête bien et avec un peu de chance, nous pourrons en acheter au village, juste en face de notre mouillage ! En parlant d’acheter, à part fruits et légumes, depuis notre arrivée en Tanzanie, 17 jours, nous avons dépensé uniquement cent euros ! Petit aparté qui me permet de répondre à une question qui nous ait souvent posée : combien faut-il compter en moyenne par mois sur un catamaran et en tour du monde ? L’interrogation légitime dépend vraiment d’un nombre important de données. Pour notre part, la moyenne est de 800 euros, clearance et maintenance comprise (exclu gros achats comme une voile ou du matériel électronique), mais cette somme est indubitablement variable selon le bateau, les exigences de chacun et la façon de naviguer et de visiter. En ce qui concerne le navire, il parait logique que plus le bateau est gros, plus les dépenses iront en conséquence, autant pour les travaux que pour les emplacements en marina ou sur un chantier. Doit être pris en compte également, la capacité ou non de l’équipage à faire les réparations du bord. Vous débrouillez seul à remettre en état une dégradation du matériel, vous reviendra forcément moins cher que de faire appel à un professionnel ! Vient ensuite la manière de naviguer, surtout voiles et moins moteur, ce qui engendre des frais mineurs en gasoil et une usure moins importante des propulseurs. La disposition de choisir des ancrages dans des baies plutôt que des amarrages sur ponton. La préférence de découvrir par ses propres moyens, au lieu de passer par des prestataires. Enfin, le budget approvisionnement sera très oscillant selon votre aptitude à vous adapter aux produits du pays, ou à vouloir retrouver vos produits préférés importés. Pour les sorties, il en va de même, manger dans des échoppes locales ou dîner dans de grands restaurants fait la différence ! Et finalement, le choix de vos destinations va être un point important, si vous préférez les grandes villes aux petits villages ou si vous restez plus longtemps dans un pays comme l’Australie ou le niveau de vie est relativement haut, plutôt qu’en Asie ou vous pouvez manger pour un euro, la distinction sera évidente. Bref, vous l’aurez compris, le prévisionnel d’un tel voyage dépend d’une quantité de facteurs et du projet de circumnavigation. En observant...

After months of nonstop work on Ixion, it had felt like boat work broke me. It was time for a break. In that spirit, we decided to visit Fort Phoenix in Fairhaven, MA and get to know the area we had been working in for so long. The boat work could wait. We had been working on the refit for months and had completed several massive projects, and about to begin another one. So, before we dove headfirst into the electric motor conversion, we decided to take a short break and visit a gorgeous bay and fort in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. Sailboat, sailing and replacing zincs Replacing the Zincs on our Volvo folding Propellers - in the water. TECH Tip In this video we focus on some of the technical and maintenance jobs we get up to on Double Trouble. If you like the video let us know with a thumbs up! Sacrificial zincs are attached to our sail drive legs and propellers and are used to protect metal structures from corroding. They work by oxidizing more quickly than the metal they are protecting, and are consumed before the other metal reacts with the electrolytes. This means our expensive aluminium sail drives and and brass propellers will be less susceptible to galvanic corrosion. This is the second video in a multi-part sailing/cruising review of the Seawind 1160 Lite. We had the opportunity to cruise aboard a Seawind 1160 Lite for three days alone to really get a feel for if this boat will be right for us. What a difference in the sailing weather. From clear blue skies and light winds, to minimal visibility and reefed sails and hearing but not seeing the lighthouse! So, how has the latest global pandemic been impacting your sailing plans? We were delayed in 2020 by a LONG time, so we ended up trying to use the time wisely and get some projects completed. We still have a LOT of projects to finish even now, but at least 9 LIVES is back in the water. In this episode we finally fix the steering system on our catamaran, move our depth transducer, give our little outboard some TLC maintenance, and repair our roof after a storm destroyed our bimini top. Following a quick island tour, we completed several boat projects and boat maintenance while on Covid-19 lockdown in Grand Cayman. Installing solar panels, making dinghy covers, sunshades and more. Having arrived to Grand Cayman from Jamaica just hours before the border closed, we settled into being stranded here for a month or more. Our plans to cruise Cuba and Mexico were now completely out the window. But what a perfect place to get locked down. A safe British island, on a free mooring, in crystal clear water and a coral garden below us. The cruise liners had already been banished before we arrived, but there were still a few tourists around and most businesses were open. So, we quickly toured Grand Cayman island while we could. After one week, curfews were steadily enforced and people could only leave their homes for food shopping or getting take-out food. Even walking on the beautiful beaches was soon banned! Along with a few other moored yachts, we were the only people allowed to swim in the sea. Luckily, we had a long list of boat projects ready for just such a time. Using our new, but as yet untouched SailRite sewing machine, we made fender blankets, bimini sunshades, a dinghy cover and installed 6 solar panels on the bimini. By May, it was getting uncomfortably hot. And with the hurricane season looming, we decided to defer Panama for another year and planned sailing back to the USA. 15 March-15 May 2020
