"Before the snow flies," is a busy time around a farm, and this year it involves improvements to the shed, fixing Akiva's platform, and doing a few other labor-intensive tasks for which we had a passionate group of volunteers to help with. Thank you very much to Noah, Bill, Thomas, Adam, Paul, Jerome, Randy, and Bill for your time, talent, and effort! Steve approached this project knowing a fair bit about woodworking, while respecting the fact that he needed to learn some specific skills for boatbuilding. He's consulted all sorts of people along the way with deep and varied experience in boat building and wooden boat restoration in order to get that knowledge. When it comes to sails and rigging, the same is true, and in this video we take you along with us to talk to a few pros. Only a small bit of our conversations are here, as there were long pauses for contemplation or for our friends to study the plans as they spoke. Joe Mello, the pro-rigger at R&W Rope https://rwrope.com/ walked through Arabella's rig with Steve, and we got a little closer to knowing what we're going to do with some spots on the boat where there are options that would require tweaks in the design. Here's a little more about Joe: https://www.tradeonlytoday.com/industry-news/rw-rope-acquires-rigging-solutions-llc Here's more about Captain Bob Glover, who's sitting all the way to the left in the R&W Rope segment: https://rwrope.com/blogs/news/meet-captain-robert-c-glover-iii Harold Burnham is an absolute legend. Boat designer, builder, sailor... and as it turns out, a wise mentor. "I'm not going to tell you how to do it, I'll tell you the way I do it, and I hope it wouldn't imply that it's the right way to do it," he says. He's built his own sails, and is encouraging us to do the same, so we went to see a bit of how he went about making sails for his boat, and to get advice about what we can glean or change from the plans. Please visit Harold's website to learn more about his boat, Ardellle, and about schooner Sylvina W. Beal. https://schoonerardelle.com/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building a 38' wooden boat in Steve's backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat Referral: Need something TotalBoat sells? BROKEN engine mounts and OSMOSIS on the rudder. Preparing Florence for the next ocean passage proved to be a bigger problem than we anticipated. Hauling Florence out of the water in Seychelles and finding more problems under the waterline put us in a race against time to try and get everything fixed before our date to re-launch. On top of that the travel lift that was supposed to lift us in broke down. Boat yard time is never easy, but this time the boat maintenance was especially challenging. We have been sailing around the world for over 5 years after setting off from England in 2016 on board our 37ft sail boat Florence. Join us as we share the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, Sailing offshore across the Oceans and exploring remote locations with our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean and off the grid. Sailing without engine is something we still try to do even though we rebuilt the motor last year. We left Allans-Pensacola Cay behind and pulled anchor under sail. With the wind from behind it made it perfect to fly the gennaker and to even drop anchor with it. It was a perfect day on the sea of Abacos. We made the most of our time at Powell Cay with a walk across the island followed by some successful spearfishing. Series of videos which covers maintenance jobs during a 7 week visit to Cloudy Bay in Spring’21 This Part 4 has a rather strong plumbing theme. - Replacing seals on the hydraulic outhaul cylinder - Replacing impeller on the deck wash pump, and re-plumbing - Replacing pressure safety valve on the domestic hot water tank - Re-plumbing the domestic hot water tank and various manifolds This extensive boat maintenance took place due to Covid pandemic which on a negative note caused us to defer our next sailing adventure to autumn 2021, but on a positive note gave us this opportunity to get Cloudy Bay’s systems in top shape before we cruise more remote parts of the world. SERVICING and REPAIRING our ageing DICKINSONS DIESEL HEATER in the height of winter on our 44 year old STEEL KETCH "Blown Away" In our weekly update, we take time out of our own maintenance plans to make a small amount of cash to help pay for our new cooker and now that we are back on anchor we need our #Dickinson #Dripfeed #heater up and working. We strip and replace the diesel filter system to the heater and find we still have an issue in the fuel supply so investigate further to find a blockage in the metering valve of the heater itself. With heat restored we get back to life on board. Full article in Multihulls World 142: http://www.multihulls-world.com/us/boat-review-test-catamaran-trimaran/0115-1088-TS-42-MARSAUDON-COMPOSITES.html Our video onboard the ORC 42 catamaran Six years after the launch of the first TS42 - and some twenty units sold - the Marsaudon Composites yard has reworked the deck plan, overall design and accommodation, to offer us the ORC 42 - TS have in the meantime become ORC. The displacement (12,800 lbs/5.8 t) is unchanged: this is half that of most catamarans of this length! And it is precisely the compact size, ease of handling and ease of maintenance that are also the assets of this superb machine. The ORC 42 is always fun to helm and performs well racing. The uncluttered styling of the layout, combined with meticulous ergonomics, does not prevent the cocooning feeling that is appreciated when blue water cruising. This week we sail to the capital of French Polynesia, Papeete, to do some boat maintenance but also to determine if we are allowed to stay in the country. I (Isabelle) being Swedish and a Europeaner, I can stay in for two years. But Kieran, although has a British passport (but that does not count for much outside UK since Brexit) can only stay in FP for three months. We are trying everything. We really want to stay here for hurricane/cyclone season. Our friends are here and we really want to explore more of this incredible country... We also get hit with 30 knots wind in the anchorage of Papeete. We praise our new anchor, shout out to Rocna. It's amazing to truly be able to trust your anchor and know we will not drag. A luxury we did not have with our previous anchor. Kieran is loving life, whilst I (a true sailor?!) get sea sick - on anchor. In this episode we dodge the rain to make more progress preparing the deck for the Bow Roller and Pulpit (more FR4 and epoxy). We also made some progress preparing for the Dyneema chainplates for the main mast. We are refitting a 44 year old Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Two years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings. We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all electric (motor, cooking etc). Now that the inside is dry (thanks to new windows, new hatches and leak chasing) we are fitting her out for live-aboard world cruising. Lots more detail on our blog at https://sustainablesailing.net/ We are on Ko-Fi! where you can buy us a coffee :-) https://ko-fi.com/sustainablesailing Track: Liquid Sky Music by Slip.stream: https://slip.stream/tracks/a25036a9-e83e-41a0-b03d-f006bf32f29d

in this videos I install my new engine. I've never done anything like this before so I was learning a lot along the way. after releasing that my previous engine was not worth fixing I went out and found this engine online to fit to my boat. after some time of organising and coordinating weather and timing. I picked it up from Hervey Bay marine only to be met with the new problems of installing a new engine which I go through in this video. she's not the most beautiful video but this vid portrays the reality of owning a boat and having to undergo maintenance. I hope you learnt something from the video and get ready for my journey all the way home in the next video. please hit the SUBSCRIBE BUTTON if you haven't already. I've been really enjoying making these videos for you guys and to show your appreciation you can subscribe and make some comments down below. thanks for always watching the videos I really appreciate it! It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, they set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. They broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error they have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Their plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s they hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #NeverStopWanderingNeverStopWondering. #TheCruisingKiwis

The finishing touches go onto the shower pan, which gets a drain installed, and the anchor locker, which gets an outlet for gunk that might make its way via the anchor chain. Two-part epoxy paint serves as yet another waterproof barrier for these pieces, which will live their lives largely in places where they won't be seen, and so will need a lot of protection from potential mold or standing water. The refrigerator has a few extra steps until it's finished, and adding three layers of 1" polyisocyanurate panel is a part of that. Steve unboxes some parts of Victoria that we haven't seen in a long time, as we around the corner toward the nitty gritty of what goes where for our 12-volt electrical system. We're in a lockdown in Grenada due to a rise in Covid-19 cases and we're not allowed off our boat. Travis is keeping busy with boat projects. He makes a custom homemade dinghy chaps to protect our inflatable dinghy from the hot Caribbean sun. Who doesn't love a few boat hacks or useful handy things onboard to make live aboard life a little easier?! We never knew where to put our instrument covers with sailing...See our discrete Sunbrella holder for them as well as a few other handy little canvas creations around our cockpit. Best of all though, Travis invents an awesome gas can holder for our dinghy to keep it snug while also being easily accessible! SEWING MACHINE Janome 525S - we'd love a Sailrite, but this one does the job for now with the ability to go through 6 layers of canvas if we're careful. Does it get any better? This week we share with you our life on a small sailboat at Allans Pensacola Cay in the Abacos. This is what cruising looks life when you get the perfect conditions and meet other sailors. From spearfishing alongside sting rays, turtles and even sharks to walking across a tropical island to reach the famous tree or enjoying beaches we do it all. Especially that it's Cory's birthday so I also have to bake a carrot cake on our small sailboat to share with the two Andy's, Meagan and Christen. Filmed March 2021. On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, we visit Marsh Harbour in the Abacos and witness the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian first-hand. Marsh Harbour was the hardest hit area during the hurricane and the damage that remained six months after the hurricane was unbelievably heartbreaking. Update November 2021: The Abacos are open and welcoming of visitors. The islands have made incredibly recoveries after the hurricane despite numerous setbacks, including the COVID pandemic, and it is amazing place to visit. Although the devastation of the hurricane is still evident, many marinas, grocery stores, and restaurants are open. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching learning how to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas. There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. The pandemic has thrown everyone a curveball and we are no exception. Now that life has settled down a bit for us, we are excited to be able to start sharing our adventures from this past year. We hope that you learn a little from our experiences and maybe inspire you to make changes to live the life you want! ***FILMED FEBRUARY 2020 *** —————————————————— SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW https://www.sailingonawhim.com https://www.youtube.com/sailingonawhim https://www.facebook.com/sailingonawhim https://www.instagram.com/sailing_on_... https://www.twitter.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— CONSIDERING BECOMING A PATRON (Revamping our Patreon Page soon!) https://www.patreon.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— GEAR: Cannon EOS Rebel SL2 https://amzn.to/2y2Hty1 Cannon Powershot G7x Mark II https://amzn.to/2S6rOVu DJI Mavic Air https://amzn.to/2W2OYgz GoPro Hero5 https://amzn.to/2S8FizU Fantasea Line FG7X II https://amzn.to/2xSuY8q Rode DDG-GO Deadcat https://amzn.to/2Y4AT4G DJI Mavic Pro Plantinum https://amzn.to/3eU5tUT —————————————————— RECOMMENDED READING: Learn to Sail – https://sailingonawhim.com/learn-to-sail Cruising Life – https://sailingonawhim.com/cruising-life Maintenance & Repair – https://sailingonawhim.com/maintenance-%26-repair Inspiration & Adventure – https://sailingonawhim.com/inspiration-%26-adventure —————————————————— MUSIC BY EPIDEMIC SOUND —————————————————— DISCLOSURE: Sailing on a Whim is a participant in affiliate advertising programs, including but not limited to the Amazon Services LLC Associations Program. HOW do we get a cooker that's TO BIG to fit the door into the boat? In this episode we continue with our winter maintenance/upgrades for Blown Away including the arrival of our new cooker, which is to big to fit through the door and has to be lowered through the roof on a halyard. Unfortunately we didn’t receive all the parts to install the cooker so watch out for the stainless steel coffee table in our deck saloon in upcoming episodes ! Degreased the engine, replaced some failed gaskets, and diagnosed the stumbling idle issue. The biggest downside to owning a classic van for a live-in or camper is the old components like the engine. It requires the proper maintenance and some of the work can easily be done yourself. Like degreasing the engine! Simply cleaning up the engine can also help you do diagnose where oil leaks are coming from. Clean it up, drive it, and you will easily be able to spot what gaskets have failed. Take it to your mechanic if you would prefer but if you have a similar Ford Van or perhaps the same 300 ci straight six ford motor, I hope some of this content is helpful to you! The greasy carpet: Give a comment if you noticed the SUPER greasy carpet! I pan across the cab of the van as I go to fire up the engine after everything is reassembled and show the horribly greasy nasty old carpet. Not to worry - I replaced it! The carpet got SO greasy from scrubbing the engine with degreaser on it and rinsing the engine with water. With plans to replace the carpet anyways, this was a great way to clean up the mess easily! Fixing a stumbling idle I attempted replacing the MAP sensor, EGR valve, IACV (Idle Air Control Valve), to no avail. I also replaced any vacuum lines that were brittle or cracked that could present a vacuum leak. No luck. The issue turned out to be two vacuum lines both connecting to the front of the throttle body and they were full of what I thought was grease (as mentioned in the video). It turned out to be little pieces of the rubber vacuum lines as the rubber has deteriorated over the years. I see this issue searched and discussed on the internet and other youtube videos and perhaps you have the same issue and I recommend thoroughly cleaning the throttle body and replacing all vacuum lines. Stay TUNED for the next video covering this ultimate stealth camper van build. Now that the engine is running smooth, its back to the build! Last week we hauled out our boat for what we were hoping to be a simple paint job and a dash of maintenance thrown in. Saoirse is a 1971 pearson 35 with a drop centerboard, and one of the things we had on the list to fix was the leak coming from our centerboard pin. While working on that we discovered we had water in our keel and one thing led to another and now what we have is a bunch of holes in our boat. But the good news is we think we found the problem. After several processes of elimination we have come to a conclusion, so now we can focus on getting this problem fixed. big love, Beau + Brandy #beauandbrandy #sailing #haulout --------------------------------------------------------------------------- -HELP SUPPORT THE PRODUCTION- Join our Patreon: http://bit.ly/BB-Patreon One time Donation via Paypal: http://bit.ly/one-time-donation-bb Be sure you are Subscribed: https://www.youtube.com/c/sailingsaoirse Amazon Wishlist: https://bit.ly/beauandbrandywishlist -SWAG- https://sailingsaoirse.com/shop/ -MUSIC- Epidemic Sound is where we find all of our music. 30 day free trial: https://www.epidemicsound.com/referral/mxtzxe/ -LETS BE SOCIAL- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/beauandbrandy Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sailingsaoirse -OUR GEAR WE USE- main camera: https://amzn.to/2lm2bSY go pro camera: https://amzn.to/3hMxf5C backup camera: https://amzn.to/2l8e3ry Waterproof Dry Back Pak: https://amzn.to/2VICYkH electric setup*: controller: https://amzn.to/2lm7hP7 electric motor: https://amzn.to/2ZnLfvN motor controller: https://amzn.to/3getpSw ____________________________________ *This channel is a participant in the Amazon Affiliate Program. During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie love about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time. Hopefully some inspiration to "Quit Job and Go Sailing".
