Now that the frameless port lights were installed, it was time to beging painting the bottom of our Catalina 30. Bottom and bootstripe are next up on the list of projects as we get ready to launch and begin sailing! It makes a pretty Electric Sailboat! In order to finish the bottom, we had to sand off the top layer of antifouling paint and fix the Catalina smile. Once that was complete we could begin painting the bottom of the hull a new color, and jazz it all up even more with a fresh new color on the bootstripe as well. Three separate days of sailing, with varying winds. On the third day I reefed, and found that my boat sails really safely and flat even as the wind picks up slightly. On the second day we saw two separate pods of dolphins (in all in excess of 35 dolphins) and both pods came and swam around and under the boat. Visits and sailing crew of both family and friends has been great, as well as being able to do some small boat maintenance. All in all a very good week of sailing, leaving me with a very happy feeling

It is treacherous and sailing around it is a huge challenge. We had to very carefully find good weather windows that would allow us to sail down the coast safely. And "good" is relative. They're all short and if you get stuck out at sea when the weather turns, it can be extremely dangerous. That means there is a lot of waiting involved. We got stuck in Richard's Bay for 9 days before a long enough window opened up that allowed us to sail the 90nm down to Durban. And then it was another 10 days before we got a window long enough to do the next leg down to East London. But all that waiting isn't a bad thing as it allowed us to explore parts of the amazing country of South Africa! Thanks for watching! Sailing Catamaran Maintenance Stuff BREAKS; We FIX It - The Boat Jobs Never End! This week we are enjoying time in Majuro Atoll. After nearly a year of cruising, we take the opportunity to complete a few boat projects. Majuro has good access to hardware shops and the US postal system, so we have better access to spares and supplies. Project one: Reinforcing our escape hatches. There is a manufacturer recall on our Goiot escape hatches. Until we get new lenses sent to us, we are required to strengthen the attachment of the lens to the frame. This requires us to source the parts, use the angle grinder to cut aluminium plates and drill through the perspex lens so we can bolt it all together. Fortunately we complete the work with no issue and still have a waterproof boat at the end of the day! Always a good result when making holes in the boat! Project Two: Re-attaching part of our kitchen bench. A repair that was done to our bench wears out so a stainless steel upstaged ‘falls out’. We much skill and copious amount of silicone sealant the skipper manages to get it all re-installed. Project Three: The backed up toilet. Plumbing on a boat is pretty serious stuff…especially when there is a blockage. There is some debate as to the cause of the blockage, but there is no doubt that the captain did a great job (eventually) clearing the pipes. Project Four: A broken washing machine. With a loud grinding noise and the smell of hot rubber our washing machine signalled that it needed some attention. We spent quite some time diagnosing the problem and attempting to fix the spider that attached to the drum. We called in the welding expertise of a local auto repair shop, but it was no use. The repair was terminal. So we stripped the machine for its parts and after three years of excellent service we are now using buckets to do our laundry! Project Five: Let there be light! There is a lot of strip lighting in our galley, but it had yellowed with age and some of the resistors looked like they were starting to get quite hot. So it was time to replace them. A fairly quick job, but it needed steady hands to solder the new connections and then stick the new lights down. Another successful job done and a much brighter galley! A win-win! Project Six: We were definitely on a roll, so time to finish big and replace the fridge seals. After looking at the replacement seals for a year and writing the job off as ‘ a bit complicated’ it turned out to be a really quick process. Remove the old seal, clean the door groove and apply the new seal. After a few days the seals were not staying in place, so applying a touch of ‘super glue’ at key points did the trick!. Six weeks in Majuro was plenty of time to get boat projects done and re-stock the larder. A nice reset before going out exploring and seeing what else the Marshall Islands had to offer. We have finally reached the end of our framelss portlights trilogy. Before we can launch the boat and begin sailing, our refit continues, which means finishing the frameless portlights installation. After several months of work, we had finally gotten to the end of the modern window project and building fixed portlights. The only thing left to do was to get the boat ready, and install them. A pretty big passage from Rhodes, Greece, an island occupied and fortified by the Knights Templar, over to the remote island of Symi, then on to the anchorage at Kamari (island of Kos) for some sailboarding, a wedding at Kalymnos, crazy katabatic winds at Icaria, and finally back to the dysfunctional but charming marina at Mykonos. In all, we sailed 189 nautical miles through some of the toughest winds and seas we've seen in the Aegean Sea. If you watched last weeks video you will know that in the last storm, we had damage to the yacht when the bolts on our port side midship cleat sheared off😫. The silver lining to that cloud was that we discovered that the cleat was fixed through the fibreglass with a balsa core at that point in the deck. We decided to fix it properly and this video covers how we cut out an area of fibreglass and balsa below the cleat fixing point and reinforced it with a 12mm solid fibreglass plate. Denver created the plate by laminating about 15 layers of glass and then cut it to size to fit the opening that Colben had created below the cleat fixing points. This was fibreglassed in before the cleat was fixed back in position. We also show how Robin completed the cabin dressing-room holly and teak flooring. We had the basic floor structure when we bought the boat but they are now finished off with the holly and teak overlay and bilge hatch covers in place. It was a bit of a process getting the holly lines on the flooring to line up, using the already completed passage floors as a guide, the dressing room floors and hatch lid lines are all lining up perfectly. We all get frustrated with how long Robin takes with things but this is proof that his constant attention to detail really pays off!👏🏻 It feels so good to finally be working on some of the finishing details on the yacht because it makes us feel like we are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. After a month in Marathon, we’re nearly finished with our DIY bimini. With just a few more finishing touches, including modifications for the backstay, the radar pole, and the solar panels, we’ll be ready to take off to The Bahamas. While in Boot Key Harbor, our friends Jordan & Randi of Learning the Lines were so kind to gift us two lobsters they had caught. We, however, had never caught, killed or cooked our own lobster, so this was quite the learning experience. How we installed a new Seaflo water pump in our travel trailer. This installation is very easy with two water lines, two wires, and 4 screws we had water in no time. Took a little time to fill the tanks of this RV, but once full they will last our son a few days and he uses a lot of water. Once the 3 gallons per minute water flow Seaflo pump, it gives us plenty of water to pressure wash at the end of this video. We did get rained out so we left our son with a mess to clean up but he has a new pump and water in his home. Sailing across the Mozambique Channel is scary at the best of times, but when you lose a propeller and see storms with 40+ knots of wind, life gets very exciting! It took us just under 8 days to sail from Baly Bay, Madagascar to Richards Bay, South Africa and the truly amazing part is that we did it in one shot. Most boats have to make a stop somewhere to wait out for better weather. We had a 20 hour period where conditions got quite rough, but on the whole we got incredibly lucky with our weather window. Jumping into the water to fit our spare fixed propeller wasn't fun, but we got it done and got safely into South Africa! Thanks for watching! It also covers the removal of the oneway valve near the holding tank and cleaning this unit and the removal of the Joker Valve at the toilet itself. If you are finding that your toilet no longer flushes, this could be due to a solidified buildup in the pipework. It is also a helpful video to watch if you need to replace your Joker Valve. How do you know if you need to replace your Joker Valve? If you find that the toilet bowl fills up slowly after being flushed, it is likely that the Joker Valve needs cleaning or replacing.
