With the sheer clamp bolted into place the next piece of the deck puzzle is the breasthooks. The breashooks join the clamp with the stem and stern posts and provide a lot of structural stability. In this episode we take a look at Victoria's breasthooks and launch into making ones for Arabella. Thanks for following our crazy journey! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For the framing offcuts: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/merchandise Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

We have a lot of repairs to do on our salvaged Beneteau 49 - but the yard the boat is at doesn't allow DIY repairs......or our dogs. Which means the very first step is to launch the boat and get ready to motor our project somewhere else. This was a nerve wracking ordeal, considering we only took possession of the boat the day before and were still unsure of just how extensive the damage was. Thanks for watching- With love The Evans' **************************************** *Our Boat* 2008 Beneteau 49 3 cabin 2 head 4JH4-TE Westerbeke generator Mast, sails and rig are in excellent condition and in storage Here's what we *think* we know about her past. Keep in mind we bought her at auction without ever meeting the owner! The owner was sailing along and ran aground - hard. Hard enough that the keel pivoted and pushed the aft end up into the hull. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. We really settle into sailing the Bahamas as we dive around Turtle Rocks and the impressive Sapona Wreck in crystal clear water. After the exciting underwater adventures we walk all around the deserted island of Gun Cay and climb to the top of an abandoned lighthouse. But as we sail into the Great Bahama Bank and without land in sight something bad happens. If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! #sailingbahamas #saponawreck #guncay ***************************************** Help the videos stay alive by becoming a patron, donating or becoming a YouTube Member. Now that we finished the DIY electric boat motor conversion and most of the new wiring, it was time to install our new Tesla lithium batteries. In order to install the new batteries, we needed a box to hold them. So after building the brand new box, we measured and prepared to install, only to discover that it didn't fit. Watch along to see how we reacted and eventually solved the problem. Other than the batteries, only a few small electrical items remain to complete our new electrical system. With our new batteries and new electrical system we will have a substantial amount of power, and be able to go off grid for a decent amount of time. Sailing around the world off grid, it's the dream. With all the work done, Ixion was almost a complete electric sailboat! Don't forget to subscribe, give us a thumbs up, and comment below. We are curious as to what everyone think about our electric sailboat motor conversion. There are a lot of debates about them in regards to sailboats, and we want to hear yours! WE’RE BACK! Returning to our Boat After 6 Months | Sailing on a Whim Ep. 32 On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, we finally return to Whim after six months on the hard in Florida. Upon our arrival we are surprised to find lots of mold and a few bugs that have taken residence in our home. With lots to do before we launch, it is a scramble to get it all done! SPECIAL THANKS: Jessie Quinn Michael & Lory Quinn Chris & Mary Varvarosky Leslie & David Holck This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching learning how to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas. There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. We are excited (and a little nervous!) to share this journey with you. Time to deal with something that we were procrastinating for a long time. We’re Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that have bought a 44ft steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200) that was abandoned on the hard for 22 years in Guarujá, Brazil. We are on the mission of refitting her to travel the world taking our house with us! Before we found our dream boat we had another cool project: we were building our Tiny Shipping Container House by ourselves, without any prior experience to be our land base in our hometown, Florianópolis (Brazil). In this week's video, I finally get to install Athena's (38 ft sailboat) new rudder. I build the new rudder last year by making a mold from the old rudder and used vacuum infusion to form the new shells. The rudder was then filled with an expanding epoxy foam. *** Links *** Sail Life Shop: (Items are shipped from the US!) https://saillifeshop.com/ Sail Life on Patreon: http://bit.ly/SailLifeOnPatreon Sail Life on Instagram: http://instagram.com/madsdahlke Sail Life on Facebook: http://bit.ly/SailLifeOnFacebook Sail Life on Twitter: http://bit.ly/SailLifeOnTwitter Donations for the sandpaper fund: https://www.paypal.me/saillife
All of our sailboat repair and maintenance blogs are now hosted on our dedicated maintenance channel, MOTHERSHIP MAINTENANCE Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/c/mothershipmaintenance An edited version of this video is now hosted here: https://youtu.be/XYX9GFcV8-8 In this series of maintenance blogs I swap out an NMEA 0183, B&G through-hull fitting, mast head unit, transducer control unit and dials for units from the Raymarine T70216 Pack. In Pt01 of this series I replaced our old NMEA 0183, B&G depth transducers with Airmar NMEA 2000 Intelligent Triducer. See Pt01 here: https://youtu.be/OS8Vh17UH08 In this maintenance blog (pt02) I swap out the old B&G mast head unit, for the Raymarine short arm wind vane transducer. It's not always easy working at the top of the mast, but luckily we were in a marina, which means less swell we and some some boat friends close by to borrow some essential tools for the job! In the next maintenance blog (Pt03) I will be replacing the old B&G transducer controller with the Raymarine ITC-5 transducer controller, and also replacing the old B&G dials with a single Raymarine I70 multifunction display unit. 5 years and this jack is still going as we lift our Jeep to plug the tire. I know we have had a mixed bit of feedback about this jack, Positive and Negative. This is a great gift for people that drive and may not have the ability to break the lugs loose or pump the jack to lift the car. For all that can lift there car and want to carry a floor jack, or battery impact, or whatever solution you use, that is great, you do you. In this video we talk about this eclectic jack, how long we have used it, the construction, and why is the color orange. We then jack up the rear tire on the jeep with no issues, and yes these tires are not factory at 32 inches. We then pull out the nail in the tire and plug it, all things we have added to our jack kit to make it better for us. The tire plugs can be harder to get in so those who can't do this part, a jack kit like this is still a great option to change the tire to a spare. I lifted a 6000 lb truck with 35-inch tires, then rotated the tires with this jack, see link for video https://youtu.be/IFjUON9VTt0 Stuff We Used In Video: One ton version no longer made. Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** For the first time ever, on our passage from Cape Town to St. Helena, one of us got sick out at sea. This was a serious illness, not sea sickness, and it was completely nerve wracking. Do we need to divert course? Do we have the proper medicines? How do we adjust watch schedules on the fly to keep our boat sailing? Fortunately, for only the second time ever, we had family join us on a passage who was able to help out. Amy's Uncle Jim had finally hopped onboard to cross a 1,000nm passage off his bucket list and he proved to be a lifesaver. With his help, we were able to nurse Amy back to health and arrive safely into St. Helena! Thanks for watching! (Footage from January 2020. Note this was pre-Covid!) Welcome back! This episode Steve gets the sheer clamp bolted together and fastened to the steam bent frames of Arabella. The clamp is the first piece of deck framing and the beginning of the visible timbers inside Arabella. Joe gives us a hand and we get the big planer rig finished and running strong. Thad also pays a visit and we get the keel timber for his new build brought down to size for him. It's a busy time around here! Next week we will dive into Arabella's breast hooks then it will be onto the beam shelf. Thanks for watching! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you enjoy the series here are a few ways you can help keep it going. Time to explore Bimini in the Bahamas. Ferry ride to Alicetown in North Bimini where we walk the whole island, try some conch salad and marvel at the Dolphin House. We also do a few adventures in Bimini South where we walk around the Nature Trail and find poison trees and the Gumbo limbo tree. We also check out the Shark Lab which was so interesting and we learned some cool facts. But what I was really excited for was to go snorkeling and I was not disappointed when two big eagle rays joined us. If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! #sailing #bimini #sailingbahamas ***************************************** Help the videos stay alive by becoming a patron, donating or becoming a YouTube Member. Now that we finished our electric sailboat conversion, it was time to finish our DIY wiring of a Catalina 30, electric motor, and continue our electric system upgrade. Not only were we installing an electric sailboat motor, but we also decided to install a new battery bank with two Tesla batteries. Additionally we installed a new Victron converter/inverter to ensure we had the most versatile system possible. Doing a massive electrics system upgrade was quite the challenge, and something neither of us had ever really done before. So join us as we both, yet again, do something new for the first time. The ARC, or Atlantic Rally for Cruisers, has been held every year now for over 30 years. As a vehicle for “safety in numbers”, 189 boats participated in the November, 2019 transatlantic crossing, and it's one of the biggest cruising rallies to be found worldwide. But getting there, whether you start in Gibraltar, the Azores, or the UK, can often be more difficult than the 2,700nm crossing itself. For us this was supposed to be a shakedown cruise, but with maintenance tasks looming and having just crossed the entire Med in a little over 3 weeks, it felt more like we were just abusing poor Talisman. So we left an abundant amount of time for inspections and upgrades, arriving in Las Palmas 3 weeks early. We also had our eye on the weather. If you wait too long, it's possible to get trapped in Gibraltar by winter storms and not even make the departure date. sailing videos; sailing, cruising, monohull, oyster, oyster yachts, sailing blog, sailing vblog, sailing vlog

On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, the Whim Crew goes to Colorado as we continue our EPIC road in Colorado exploring so many places including Pike’s Peak, Rocky Mountain National Park, Sand Dunes National Park and Reserve, and even go sailing in the Rocky Mountains! This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching learning how to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas. There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. We are excited (and a little nervous!) to share this journey with you. We hope that you learn a little from our experiences and maybe inspire you to make changes to live the life you want! ***FILMED SEPTEMBER 2019 *** —————————————————— SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW https://www.sailingonawhim https://www.youtube.com/sailingonawhim https://www.facebook.com/sailingonawhim https://www.instagram.com/sailing_on_a_whim https://www.twitter.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— CONSIDERING BECOMING A PATRON https://www.patreon.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— GEAR: Cannon EOS Rebel SL2 https://amzn.to/2y2Hty1 Cannon Powershot G7x Mark II https://amzn.to/2S6rOVu DJI Mavic Air https://amzn.to/2W2OYgz GoPro Hero5 https://amzn.to/2S8FizU Fantasea Line FG7X II https://amzn.to/2xSuY8q Rode DDG-GO Deadcat https://amzn.to/2Y4AT4G DJI Mavic Pro Plantinum https://amzn.to/3eU5tUT —————————————————— RECOMMENDED READING: Learn to Sail – https://sailingonawhim.com/learn-to-sail Cruising Life – https://sailingonawhim.com/cruising-life Maintenance & Repair – https://sailingonawhim.com/maintenance-%26-repair Inspiration & Adventure – https://sailingonawhim.com/inspiration-%26-adventure —————————————————— MUSIC FROM EPIDEMIC SOUND https://www.epidemicsound.com/referral/8umi8w/ —————————————————— DISCLOSURE: Sailing on a Whim is a participant in affiliate advertising programs, including but not limited to the Amazon Services LLC Associations Program. #sailingsecrets #uncovered #thetruth #livingonaboat We arrived in Xabia, the coast of Spain, with a very strange sound coming from the main sail furler which meant Woody really had to crack on and get to work on it. After spending a fair amount of time and energy taking it apart, we had to get all the spare parts ordered from England and shipped to our dear friends address in Javea ( Xabia). We were so grateful to be able to use their address because living on a sail boat, we do not have an address and this can make things very complicated. Anyway, Woody hates doing lots of maintenance so while he spent the next 3 weeks doing maintenance and fixing the main sail furler, we decided to think about all the things that bothered us about living on a boat. Review this Forney "MIG" Flux Core Welder After 2 Years of use on light metal. This paper-thin metal on the chair is not easy to weld, but we were able to do it. Here you will see the chair and how one of the legs is broke clean through. We preparing the metal by grinding the paint off, then doing some welding. Nephew and Uncle get into a little competition on who welds the best. Both welded very well because this chair withstood the butt test. For testing, we started out light followed by me sitting in the chair and rocking! Once the test was done and the chair did not break, paint was applied. Our son first started painting a little close, and a whole lot of runs, but the rust is gone and we hope the chair makes it another year. Episode 138: Building Head Doors This week we got started on a task Ricky was not looking forward to, that being.. getting our head door complete. For the longest time we thought of getting someone in to build the door for us that is how badly we didn't want to do it but then opted for building it ourselves 😂 This darn task took us way longer than expected but don't all boat projects? The door is 85% complete. Now she just needs another few coats of varnish and her latch & I can tick it off our boat to do list. See ya next week!! ***** After our escape hatches failed sailing around South Africa and a propeller fell off in the Mozambique Channel, Starry Horizons wasn't in good shape to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Fortunately, Cape Town is a great place to get a lot of projects done! Here's a quick run down of all the projects we got accomplished: 1) Received and installed new escape hatches 2) Replaced faulty alternator and installed new external regulator 3) Replaced lost folding propeller and added PropSpeed 4) Serviced deck vests 5) Serviced winches 6) Replaced engine room air vent covers 7) Repaired enclosure panels 8) Repaired sail stack pack 9) Installed new hydrogenerator It was a lot of projects! But not to worry, we also found some time while in Cape Town to get out diving and hike Table Mountain! Once all those things were done, then we finally felt ready to tackle the Atlantic Ocean. Thanks for watching! In this episode we varnish the white oak clamp and start working on cleaning up Victoria's hackmatack knees. The knees were likely harvested from the roots of a hackmatack tree growing in a bog in the North East sometime around 1925. It's amazing to be able to put them back to work in Arabella. Before we can repair them we needed to source some hackmatack, thankfully we have a guy for that. Andrew from Restoring Rosalind https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAiOa-rrrphX9_U0ddBlxyQ As always, thanks for watching and helping us keep the weekly videos coming! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com
Now that we removed our Atomic 4 Engine, we are ready to install our ThunderstruckEV electric sailboat motor conversion kit. Going green has never felt so good. We were inspired by our fellow YouTube sailors Dan and Kika from Sailing Uma, and decided we wanted to go green. They weren't the only reason we decided to make this decision, quite frankly, there was a mountain of reasons. The largest one was our Atomic 4 was gas and it the smelly, loud, temperamental, and occasionally incontinent; needless to say, it was showing its age and it was clear that this atomic era fossil was ready to be retired... and we wanted something quiet, eco friendly, and just an all around nice individual to be around. Going electric was the perfect decision, especially since a motor on a sailboat is auxiliary. Watch as we begin converting Ixion to an electric sailboat, and all the hurdles that entrails. Comment below with any questions you have in regards to the motor and we will address them in future video. Did we get it done on time, there wasn't much time left on the clock but you will just have to wait and watch the video to see our final days of DIY boat repairs. A break in the weather comes for us to escape from Cartagena. Usually gale force winds are outside but we have a small weather window where it drops to 30knots so we will need to complete all the jobs by then. How to fibreglass, how to do a bottom job, how to fix the head, how to make security bars, how to fix a broken propellor, how to do a wire splice to rope, how to put in a sink, how to flow coat, how to not crazy with your wife doing boat projects.
