Sailing and spearfishing a remote nuclear island paradise - Ep 128 We've been in the Montebello Islands talking about exploding nuclear bombs before. However, in our second visit to these paradise islands we see Rob eating awful food (again), we check out his spearfishing prowess (thanks to Troy @FreeRangeLiving) - such as it is - AND we talk about exploding nuclear bombs, the difference this time, we learn how vulnerable the military personnel were, like the Australian public who were kept in the dark about plans until the last moment before the 'tests' were detonated. The fall out was both political and literal. Luckily we manage to borrow a Geiger counter so we can check that we aren't exposing ourselves to any harmful radiation before we hit the beach for a workout with our buddies Chasing Eden. Thank you for helping keep us afloat and supporting the creative process. It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, they set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. They broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error they have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Their plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s they hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #NeverStopWanderingNeverStopWondering. #TheCruisingKiwis
Steve is the 5th generation of his family to live at Pinetum Farm, and many of his tools are lovely hand-me-downs, but some are workhorses he bought at the start of the project for as much bang as he could get for the buck. Unfortunately, the Delta thickness planer has been complaining loudly lately, and boards take longer and longer to mill. Enter the new thickness planer, which we race for time against the old Delta to get a rough calculation of how many hours we'll be saving for the rest of the milling that needs to get done. Spoiler alert: IT'S A LOT. *We need your help!* Do you or does someone you know have the ability to work with stainless steel? We need a fabricator in New England to help. Steve outlines many of the details of that work starting at 13:12. Spread the word, ask around, let us know through the contact section of our website: acorntoarabella.com. And finally, we get the navigation table and the quarter berth mocked up, meaning that we've rounded the corner of having the footprints of all the interior furniture decided. Our parting shots are of the glue-up for the navigation table, constructed of mahogany from Victoria. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building a 38' wooden boat in Steve's backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat Referral: Need something TotalBoat sells? Making our way back to the FEARSOME GREEK CAPES - Known for swallowing ships and called the "GATEWAY TO THE UNDERWORLD by the ancient GREEK MARINERS ! In this episode we take a trip back into Porto Heli to refuel and replenish our food stocks before heading South back towards #capemaleas the southern most tip of mainland Greece. A mixed feeling, Happy to be heading "home" and sad to be leaving the Agean Sea, we had a fantastic summer season in and around Greece and have covered over 1500 miles bouncing from island to island. But it's time to pay the ferry man, there's maintenance to do, some major repairs and several upgrades that we want before we head West back out of the Med... The story continues. We can’t believe they let us inside, we have been let loose inside a sailmakers loft in Airlie beach with the guidance of our good friend and marine trimmer Sue. It's no secret Nakama’s canvas work needs some serious love. A boom bag has been on our wish list for years and our poor old dodger is no longer hanging on by a thread but patched up with duct tape sporting more holes than fabric the dodgy dodger is more of a representation of a dodger than an actual dodger. After a cracking sail, we crack into the work on our first attempt at D.I.Y marine trimming at the local sailmaker's loft. We are so grateful to have been given the opportunity to work in this space and learn an abundance of knowledge about a whole other side of boating. In 2021 this is only $6 for a 40lb bag. They're made from 100% dried and compressed pine sawdust. When the pellets get wet they swell up to absorb the liquid and fall apart into sawdust. They also help hide some of the toilet odors. You'll still want a fan vent to eliminate all odors and assist drying. With the fan on you don't need to use as much compost medium since you don't need to completely bury the waste under the medium to avoid smells. That means you don't need to carry as much or dump the bag as frequently: https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/tractor-supply-pine-pellet-stall-bedding-40-lb Put a little lemon-scented Gray-water Odor Control in the urine container if you don't plan to empty it frequently: https://www.amazon.com/Camco-Control-Drains-Treats-Holding/dp/B007JG1W1E/ref=sr_1_2 Use 1 to 1 mix of vinegar and water in a spray bottle to clean toilet seat and keep the urine diverter fresh.

Are we prepared for this? We face the proposition of continuing our Atlantic Crossing by sailing almost 2000 miles without a motor or turning around. We have clogged fuel filters in our Yanmar engine from bad diesel fuel in Sint Maarten or Grenada. We aren't 100% sure where we got it from. We fix out fuel filters, but in the meantime, we burn out our starter motor. Our engine is now dead at sea with no way to re-start it. The spare we have onboard looks completely different than the one we removed. We contact our patrons via sat phone to do some more digging. Will we get back up and running? Meanwhile, while sailing, Kate is sewing up our spinnaker sock as we ripped it the day before. Roxy the sailing dog is very chill through the whole process. Thankfully offshore sailing requires a prepper type mindset. We aren't preparing for the end of the world, but we do want to ensure our tiny home systems will work off the grid in the remote wilderness of the middle of the ocean. We are on our own, we can't call the police for help, there are no first responders, there is no internet for DIY how to videos. For this reason we carry a lot of spare parts. Sadly, this experience is not a scary Halloween prank, it's the real deal. So who is this crazy sailing couple? We are trying to sail around the world, West About, via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good hope. Unlike some of the other new sailing channels, we are not just some hot bodies or sexy girls in bathing suits that don't know how to sail. We are experienced racing sailors that know how to get the best performance out of a boat, navigate in extreme conditions, and have lots of fun! So, we hope we don't have too many boat fails and keep it all about a beautiful sailboat sailing at her best! This isn’t a Captain Ron movie, it’s the real deal. If it’s gonna happen, it will happen out there! Join us as we keep on trucking across the Atlantic, from St. Maarten to the Azores in this leg of our around the world circumnavigation. We quit our jobs and launched our boat in July of 2019 and have sailed over 7,000 miles so far crossing oceans. This relaxing video has us sailing in the Atlantic ocean, during our transatlantic voyage. Our weather routing has us making a straight shot, rather than over the top of low pressure systems via Bermuda. This is unconventional, but so is our trip. Our route will continue to take us in the Portuguese trades, to the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, then on to Argentina, Chile, Cape Horn, and Patagonia. This is where we really want to sail away to and escape into the purity of nature. We hope to get there, but this trip is not easy. Like you, before we left we also watched the inspiring videos of s/v Delos, Sailing La Vagabonde, Project Atticus, and Gone with the Wynns to name a few. We have to take a moment to thank those that have gone before, and we hope that we can inspire you like we were. We learned a lot about living off the grid in a tiny hope from their and other YouTube videos. We are happy you are watching ours. So, grab your coffee and sail across the ocean along with us as we conquer our biggest fear, the unknown of what lies ahead in our voyage. Welcome aboard! Oh, and despite what the marketing says....you don't need a catamaran or multihull to go sailing and they are not all as fast as you think (they are nice and some good ones are fast, they are great party boats though and we love it when our friends have one!!!! ;-) Like this video and want to help us get better video shots, improve our sound quality, and increase our editing prowess? Before we went to the boat show, Steve made progress with the galley sink, counter, and stowage area. He broke out some locust and used cherry for the first time—some sweeping, beautiful curves have made a beautiful cubby for needful things where food prep will happen. The Annapolis Sailboat Show, also known as the United States Sailboat Show, was every opportunity we hoped it would be. Along with meeting Brian from s/v Delos in person to say thanks for the inspiration, we met cruisers, followers, Patreon supporters, new friends, and we got to see some of the gear we'll need for systems. Having a good look at some of the things we've only researched from afar was enlightening, as was the opportunity to talk with the people who could speak authoritatively about how that gear is going to fit with the type of cruising we want to do on Arabella. Jason from Mantus Anchors gives a demonstration about the geometry of modern anchors (hey Delta folks, don't get testy! If you like your anchor, keep on keepin on), Steve points out what he likes about the refrigeration system we're going to be custom-building, and we give you a really good look around the sights and sounds of the show... even letting you eavesdrop a bit on a few random conversations. Thank you so much for your support! Keep an eye out for the bonus videos that are coming soon—the newsletter is the best way to ensure you don't miss anything: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Sailing back to the Islands without Sailing Zatara - Ep 127 Thank you for helping keep us afloat and supporting the creative process. You can be part of the crew for less than the price of a coffee. https://www.patreon.com/CruisingKiwis We are sailing back to the Montebello Islands, West of Dampier, but unfortunately this time we are sailing alone without our good friends Sailing Zatara who have plans to sail many miles off shore to the Maldives. We have given the idea of sailing with them careful consideration. We have flip flopped about struggling to make a decision to stay or to go and have finally decided to stay, although we are still not sure that's the right decision to make. In other news Declan is looking great having had his haircut, and we have thrown our selves in to the world of art having recently purchased two small samples of aboriginal art from the Juluwarlu community art group. Rob, Rachel, Finn, Declan, Ivan https://www.patreon.com/CruisingKiwis BACK STORY In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob decided to row a tiny seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and Rachel purchased Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 19, Declan 17 and Ivan 1, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #TheCruisingKiwis #timetosaygoodbye

After an unexpected wake up in the middle of the night we decide to pull anchor and leave West End on Great Bahama Island. Building waves force us to retreat in the commercial Harbor of Freeport but luckily the harbormaster waived the fee due to stormy weather. DID you take the RED PILL or the BLUE PILL ? Hope you all enjoyed "SAILING WITH JAMES BOND and are ready for a little catch up in time ! Blown Away Having finally escaped from the clutches of the dreaded #MELTEMI (north winds) of the #Aegean in #GREECE we set sail for #Syros, where we anchored for a few days and stretched our legs after three weeks of boat confinement. From Syros we sailed to #Kithonos only to find the first anchorage in #Loutra absolutely full of large power boatsank the harbour as equally full of charter boats. We also debate the pros and cons of electronic navigation as we look for a tiny island that is shown on all our charts but apparently does not exist, before going to anchor in #Portocheli to sit out some stronger winds. Living on board a sail boat during retirement we have noticed that the wear and tear has gone up massively from our usual 6 weeks aboard when we were working. So this weeks episode shows us carrying out more maintenance. Its not all glory living on a sail boat, so many jobs need doing to keep us in good shape for future sailing. You can see how we remove brown and black satins from the hull prior to polishing and what its like to remove a 20 year old sticky backed vinyl stripe. It was not as bad as I expected. So if you thinking of doing it, don't be put off and watch the video. Hello! I'm still here. I'm stuck! I can't do much more until the mast is down and out the way. It is planned to come down but strong winds and a busy schedule has delayed it. Once the mast is down I will be building a shelter to protect the deck whilst I make that good. In the meantime I've been researching all the different modern core materials I can use instead of balsa. Looking at all the methods of re-coring and lots of other things. Extra from video - I realised whilst editing that the second plan of the boat was the correct bilge keel version and first was the fin keel. Also that the plans are to scale and will be immensely helpful with the layout and refitting everything on deck. I hope you enjoy watching and I will hopefully be back to building soon. Sailing oceans to outback Escape lockdown to Australia's Grand Canyon - Ep 126 Multiple times we were told, "While you are in Dampier you have to go and see Karijini National Park". So when we were offered the use of a car and a swag for a few days, by two of our loveliest supporters, we jumped at the chance to head inland 600 kilometres to the majestic breath-taking gorges and crystal clear rockpools of Australia's grand canyon. We were not disappointed with what we discovered. Thank you for helping keep us afloat and supporting the creative process. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 19, Declan 17 and Ivan 14, in tow. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #TheCruisingKiwis #Karijini

We hope you caught the live discussion with Chesapeake Light Craft's John Harris that stood in for last week's episode. If not, here it is: https://youtu.be/498a2IpwfAc And we went aboard Calypso, a Bristol Channel Cutter (hull No. 6, built by the Sam L. Morse yard in 1976) as well for a look around: https://youtu.be/uZkFNjgkezQ In this week's episode, we continue to build an interdependent web of useful, practical, and custom spaces. Just as the wood stove and choice of composting head are very personal decisions, so too is the under-mount galley sink that Steve has chosen for Arabella. He plans to hunt and fish wherever he roams, and because he loves making and eating home-cooked food, the galley that's coming together is rightfully taking up a good amount of real estate, space-wise. Steve has heard from trusted cruising friends about the convenience and practicality of the sink as a provider of convertible/flexible stowage and working surfaces, and so he's chosen a work station sink for the job. Bulkheads are sanded, faired, sanded, coated, sanded, coated, sanded.... You get the idea. There's a lot of that around here. Speaking of that, in this episode we use the following products, and if you're considering a purchase at Jamestown, we've got a referral link below (click, then shop!) that kicks us a little bit of cash for each order: TotalFair https://www.totalboat.com/product/totalfair Gleam 2.0 https://www.totalboat.com/product/gleam Varnish Primer https://www.totalboat.com/product/wood-sealer-varnish-primer TotalProtect https://www.totalboat.com/product/totalprotect And at the very end, if you've been wondering who Annie B is, and heard her voice in last week's live events, she shares a little mixing cup tip that was a gap of knowledge to her until she had to use some 3:1 epoxy products from TotalBoat. She's been sailing, sometimes living aboard, and maintaining wooden boats for a while now, does a lot of work in the background here at A2A, and that's her little Boston terrier hanging around and about. Maye is 13 years old and has 4,000 nautical miles under her paws. This is it we are doing our testing to sail across the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas. After so many weeks of work and stress we finally have our negative test and our Health visas from the Bahamas. Even though it isn't the perfect weather window we sail into the Gulf Stream. We leave West Palm Beach in the middle of the night so that we can arrive in West End to check-in during the daylight hours. Filmed March 2021. If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! #sailing #gulfstream #sailingbahamas ***************************************** Help the videos stay alive by becoming a patron, donating or becoming a YouTube Member. Adding a sail on the stand-up paddle board increases the range and efficiency to potentially travel further with less effort. This was an experiment that worked surprisingly well. I will use this again to cover a longer distance when the wind forecast is favorable. I went camping for a few days to try it out. This documents my trip. Enjoy.
