In this episode, Replacing a broken Shroud on our Sailboat WITHOUT a RIGGER!, our new rod has finally arrived in Grenada and we are ready to replace or broken lower port side shroud. After a couple days in Anse La Roche, Carricou, and a visit to Petite Martinique, we sail back down to Grenada to pick up our new shroud. With help from friends, we are able to go up the mast and do the replacement ourselves without hiring a rigger to do this for us. Having re-tensioned the rig so many times on our own we have a good idea of how much tension to put on our shrouds by feel alone. *NOTE: if you are new to this and don't know what you are doing, you really do need to ask a professional rigger for assistance as imporper tightenning of rod rigging can lead to serious accidents. #sailboatmaintenance #sailing channel #caribbeancruising If you like our videos and want to see more/better videos, more often you can become a patreon supporter: https://www.patreon.com/sailingbalachandra If you haven't yet SUBSCRIBED and wan to see more please click the SUBSCRIBE button above, and be sure to give this video a like! If you like BOAT WORK this video is for you :). We haul Delos out of the water for some well needed maintenance! Brian dives head first into what feels like a million projects... Sanding, painting, patching blisters in the keel, fixing a corroded through hull, servicing the prop and bow thruster just to mention a few. I’ve always admired Brian’s incredible work ethic and the way he can pretty much fix anything AKA “McGyver” :) haha! Hope you enjoyed seeing this other side of what its like to live on a sailboat full time. Many HUGS! Kazza, Brian and little Sierra PS. They say "Do something you love, and you'll never work another day of your life", but when a tool doesn't do what it should and the task list for the day has a few boxes left unchecked, it really feels like work. Despite that, Steve soldiers on and nearly finishes the mast blocking, using a new tool that Joe refurbished for us. That leaves only a few more pieces to put in place before the main deck structure is finished. As soon as that is done, the diesel engine can get lowered into place. Stay tuned! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. We decided to go exploring Spanish Wells more and walk all around the island and even out to a nice Sand Bar on the Atlantic side. We look at the colourful houses and soak in the Bahamian culture. Our main reason for coming here was to troubleshoot our Yanmar engine problems. So we go around town trying to find a mechanic. And Cory starts to take it apart to figure out what wrong with it. This was filmed mid-February. After all of the work, we decided it was time to finally enjoy ourselves starting by Sailing New England. Our first destination is Mattapoisett. We have spent so much time working that we sometimes forget to enjoy ourselves. Ixion has been in Mattapoisett since last year, yet we haven't taken the time to explore it. So before sailing south to warmer water, we thought we should explore New England some more, starting with our current location. We explore Mattapoisett Harbor and Town Wharf and learn about its connection to Herman Melville & Moby Dick, visit the general store, explore the neighborhood and enjoy the cape cod architecture before finally heading to Neds Point Lighthouse. Please enjoy the glimpse into this coastal New England town with deep roots in tourism, whaling, and literature. —————————————————————————- Who we are: Nick and Jake, gay sailor and filmmakers fresh from Los Angeles currently living in Cape Cod. We sail in heavy weather, setting a new speed record. Kate quits her job and goes all-in on the sailing lifestyle! Join our crew on Patreon! www.patreon.com/ruca Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram! @rucasailing www.facebook.com/rucasailing www.twitter.com/rucasailing www.instagram.com/rucasailing Track us on our website! www.sweetruca.com 0:00 Intro 0:29 Leaving Nantucket We leave Nantucket in a fairly extreme weather window (by most cruisers standards) to sail across Nantucket Sound, Vineyard Sound, Buzzards Bay, and Rhode Island Sound to Narragansett Bay at Newport/Jamestown, Rhode Island. The wind is blowing 20-30 knots, there are fast currents with seawater running between the sounds and the Atlantic Ocean. There are also numerous shoals and shallow areas we must navigate safely. It is challenging sailing. 4:20 New Record Top Speed It is a bit cold, a foul weather and life jacket kind of day. With this though, we are able to set our new top speed record for the boat, 13.9 knots boat speed (~16 miles per hour) on the reach over Martha's Vineyard. Our sail setup was a single reef in the mainsail along with a full #2 jib/genoa trimmed to an outside lead. We had lots of fun playing in the waves. 7:58 Jamestown, RI We covered the ~100 miles and arrived in Dutch Harbor, on Jamestown Island, part of Rhode Island, just before sunset the same day. We were sailing at greater than 200 miles per day pace, which is very fast for a cruising sailboat. 8:25 New Logo First on our to-do list while in Jamestown was to visit GT3 Creative to have our new boat name and logo's printed and installed. Cary, the owner of GT3, used to race Melges 24's against us. Along with being a high-performance sailor, his company also makes the graphics for some of the best-known teams in sailing, including the Americas Cup, Volvo Ocean Race, and other high profile teams. They were also working on a new boat bottom/anti-fouling wrap when we were there. Cool stuff! We were humbled he would be putting the graphics on the little old J Boat, Sweet Ruca. They still look beautiful after 5000 miles and a year later. If you need boat graphics, call GT3 first! 10:22 Boat Projects & Shopping It was now time to get some much-needed boat work done. The Canvas Lady, Tanya, had been working on some solar panel layouts for our bimini top while we were in Maine. So it was time to pick that up and install more solar panels. We also needed to do some general maintenance work, including plumbing repair for our shower. We visit West Marine and Home Depot as we drive around Rhode Island running errands. 13:33 Newport & USCG Documentation We had been waiting on our official boat USCG documentation, as the boat was previously registered in England, we wanted to enlist a professional to handle the initial paperwork. We picked up our documents in downtown Newport Rhode Island. 14:48 Kate's Resignation We grabbed some lunch, where Kate sent her final work email. She officially quit her teaching job (resigned with notice properly, but quit for drama effect) with a countdown to sending the email. The moment draws strong emotions as Kate enjoyed her job and teaching children. We hope to do more in the future to help people in other ways. 16:41 Provisioning Lastly we stocked up on groceries as we are preparing to make our way through Hell's Gate and New York City on our way to the Annapolis Boat Show, and further to the Bahamas and further south to the Caribbean. #sailing #cruising #sailboat #travelvlog #saillife People we bought things from we now call friends, and want to share that with you. Check their websites out below. www.gt3creative.com www.thecanvaslady.com About Us: So who are we? Well, we aren't Sailing La Vagabonde, Sailing Doodles, Sailing Uma, Gone With the Wynns, or Sailing Delos. We don't have a fancy catamaran, but we do have a pretty spiffy and fast monohull sailboat that likes to eat cruising catamarans like the Fountaine Pajots, Leopards, and Lagoons for lunch and leave them in the dust ;-) We are Kate and Curtis, a sailing couple, with our sailing dog Roxy, aboard SV Sweet Ruca. We used to be sailboat racers on the great lakes, and our goal is to cruise around the world via the capes (the wrong way or the hard way). We will see if this will happen or not, as the "new normal" has put quite a damper on our travels. For now, enjoy our videos and join us on our journey via our YouTube Channel. 'Till Next Time :-)

In this weeks episode, we make a classic Chinese take-out dish, Egg Foo Young. It is a great tasting and no too hard dish to make. It is a great way to use up some leftovers. Typically this is done in a wok, BUT you can also shallow fry it on the Blackstone using this technique. The Egg foo young contains: 1 cup bean sprouts, 1/2 cup mushrooms, 1/4 cup onion/pepper slices, either peas, green onions, snap peas or whatever else you want to use up. If you want protein, I would add a 1/4 cup of small diced meat (chicken, beef, pork, shrimp, etc) and 4 or 5 eggs until a slurry (not too wet) The gravy is simply 1 cup of chicken broth, 1 Tbs of Oyster or Hoisin Sauce, 1 Tbs of Soy Sauce, a dash of white pepper, and a slurry of equal parts of cornstarch and water to thicken at the end (1 tsp of each) The griddle should be at about 375° and the oil should be that hot too. Be sure to put the oil on the hot griddle and give it a couple of minutes for the oil to also get up to temperature. Below is a list of things we believe are worth having with the Blackstone. Bought some lumber today, and started work on replacing the booms. Both were broken, the main boom before I brought her, and the fore boom on the way to Cape Verde. Mostly due to poor maintenance before I bought her, but also to the previous owners/idiots not being able to read the simple instructions in Practical Junk Rig, which caused stresses to build up where various lines were incorrectly rigged.

That's it!! We are ready to splash our dream sailboat after 23 years on the dry!!! We’re Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that have bought a 44ft steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200) that was abandoned on the hard for 22 years in Guarujá, Brazil. We are on the mission of refitting her to travel the world taking our house with us! Before we found our dream boat we had another cool project: we were building our Tiny Shipping Container House by ourselves, without any prior experience to be our land base in our hometown, Florianópolis (Brazil). Last year in St Martin we began the process of Re-Rigging our sailboat in preparation for crossing to Bermuda. We did all of the work ourselves and used Sta-lok fittings on the lower ends of the stays once they were cut to length. At the time we could only afford to do the Backstay, Baby-stay and the Intermediary Stays, as well as replacing some original closed cell turn buckles that looked a little tired. The deal was that we would complete the remainder of the rigging within one year as soon as we could afford to do it and we had the opportunity. This was that opportunity! We had 3 days in a marina fall in our lap and we took used every second of it to change out 6 stays in 3 days. We managed to change all four lower stays, the top caps, and attempted the forestay but were unable to finish as a result of the Furler tube. We'll have to try that one again another time soon! After sailing to Faro on the beautiful Algarve coast, we are to stubborn to wait and enter at the completely wrong time! Against a big current and whirling washing machine waters we make it through by the skin of our teeth! That was a lesson learnt..... whoops! We anchor at the sand bank island of Culatra and spend a few wonderful days exploring and doing naked boat maintenance, you would be amazed at the amount of naked people we encounter in this lifestyle, no big deal its just skin, all be it a little white in places for us ;-) Thank you again to our wonderful Patrons! you are helping massively to make these episodes possible! We go over how to install and review the Samsung Over The Range Microwave. You can install the over range microwave on your own, but having another person there is so much better. We start the video by showing how to change the blower fan vent direction depending on your venting needs. We cover how to put the filter in the inside venting and end the install with the removal of the old microwave and install of the new Samsung Over Range Microwave. Once everything was installed for the Samsung Over Range microwave, my wife " Danielle" goes over how we use it, one month after the install. Pretty much works like our last microwave with some features on the old microwave we miss, and new features of the Samsung Over Range Microwave we love. Problems with mast rotation on your Hobie 14? Since we are still in lockdown, Rowdy brings us a great mod to the Hobie 14 based on the European rig to help with rotation. This could also be adapted to the 18. Hopefully we can get out sailing soon! #hobie14 #hobiecat #hobiemastrotation

Episode 145 : We are so close to having all our boat jobs that are required to have completed the rebuild of Lady Africa, the rest would just be upgrades and maintenance. ;) We serviced our hydraulic steering, ran a fresh water flush system for our water maker and installed a salt water tap in the galley to help conserve water when washing dishes. Every bit counts. Yes we have a water maker but we really would like to have water where we feel absolutely necessary. To shower and drink. We also added in a nice latch for our head door to keep it shut during passage while you're in the shower so that the door doesn't just slide open on you. We also took a trip to Robben Island. Never having been there before we decided we needed to go there before we leave because we don't know when we will have the opportunity to do it again. It was a lot different than we expected and the island itself had so much history to it that we also had never heard about. It was quite fascinating. See ya next week!! It doesn't seem to matter if you live on a boat, RV or House there is always maintenance to be done to it. That is the case this week. A simple broken toilet handle made me realize we had a few other things around the house that needed repair or maintenance. How to change a sprinkler head, How to replace a toilet handle, and how to prune an Areca Palm tree are all topics for this week. We are getting rid of the marine toilet and the disgusting holding tank full of raw sewage... and we are getting rid of the ever-present stink. Our future head will be a composting head, and it will be a wonderful upgrade! In this video, part 2 of 4, Duke builds a sunken base for the new composting head so it can be mounted securely in place of the old marine head. The base is made of plywood, but will be wrapped in fiberglass in part 3 using techniques borrowed from "stitch and glue" plywood and fiberglass boat construction. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We can't produce quality inspirational content indefinitely without the support of our fans. Steve gets back to work on the deck structure as well as fitting the sampson post. This post which lies at the bow of the vessel needs to be very strong and stick straight up out of the deck. Spearfishing and snorkeling keep us around Green Cay for longer than we thought. But eventually we sail across the New Providence Channel over to Meeks Patch then Spanish Wells in Eleuthera. We are slowly mastering the art of sailing without engine in the Bahamas as we island hop our way around. A not so friendly turkey welcomes us on Meeks Patch along with some pigs. And Spanish Wells has so much to offer; fruits and vegetables, beers and sandy beaches. This was filmed mid-February. If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! #sailing #sailingwithoutengine #bahamas ***************************************** Help the videos stay alive by becoming a patron, donating or becoming a YouTube Member. In this episode we work out one of the more pressing issues we faced while we were 'stuck' in the Ragged Islands during the pandemic late Spring - How to get food. At the time, the Bahamas had banned inter-island travel which meant that we either had to head home to the U.S where the virus was flourishing or figure out a way we could stay in our safe paradise longer. When we learned that a mailboat came regularly from Nassau to deliver food and gas to the residents of Duncan town we immediately began to work on arranging delivery for our crew. Though the process was time consuming - From initially working out how to obtain delivery of food (and gas) to the pickup of the goods - Ultimately it was hugely successful. Now we could fully sustain ourselves with the issues of food and gas solved since power and water were already not a problem thanks to our solar panels and water maker. We actually placed several more orders as time went on and later you will see how the mailboat delivery system developed to meet other needs down the line. Not only do we get food and gas, but in this episode Bill experiences big personal change when Jerra from s/v Zinzi, a friend recently out of quarantine, gives Bill the haircut of a lifetime when she chops off most of his luscious locks. It's a new look for Bill but perfect for our low maintenance lifestyle - Both Grace and Bill are more than pleased with the results! -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Thanks to our Patrons! Enjoying our channel? If you saw episode 4, and our failed attempt at installing a true portable ac (not marine) you'll know how excited we were to actually buy a REAL marine AC unit. We rigged this DIY unit with the ability to remove it, so we can take it to the next boat if need be! Be sure to let us know in the comments below if you have any questions or thoughts about the project. Your feedback is so much appreciated! *Marine ac unit - https://www.webasto-comfort.com *Pelican case - https://www.pelican.com Music by: Daniel Trimble - Old One Flamingo @anemoia_901 soundcloud.com/shipwreckermemphis/sleep-like-the-dead Maverick Knapp - (intro) Wayward Drift Epidemic Sound Follow us on Facebook and Instagram FB: https://fb.me/seacitylife IG: https://www.instagram.com/seacity_life/ Want to get some free swag and support our video making efforts? We go over where the throttle position is, how to replace it, and what error codes lead us to replace the TPS. Our error codes for the Jeep were 14 and 24, 14 is the map volage is incorrect, 24 is a voltage issue for the Throttle Position Sensor. Blog with video on how to get OBD code, and were Danielle almost drove through the house: https://www.chrisdoeswhat.com/how-to-replaced-jeep-o2-sensor/ Tools and parts: ECCPP Throttle Position Sensor TPS: https://amzn.to/2GdNITm Milwaukee 18-Volt Drill and Impact Driver Kit: https://amzn.to/2HfipZ5 268-Piece Husky Mechanics Tool Set: https://amzn.to/3kuGUzD Some common symptoms of a failing or bad throttle position sensor: 1. Vehicle doesn’t accelerate, no power when accelerating, or pushes the gas for you, which is really not good. Everyone hates no power when driving, but when your car decides to apply the gas when you don't want it, that is bad. 2. The Engine doesn't idle smoothly, running rough, low RPM, or Stalling This stalling misfiring and eventually not running at all could be stranded, so this is something you don't want to happen to you. 3. Vehicle accelerates, but it feels like there is a governer restricting your performance. Like when you went to the go-kart track and you get the go-kart that only goes in the slow lane. 4. Check Engine Light comes on, with any of the above symptoms. For us with our Jeep Wrangler, this was a code 24, low or high voltage at the sensor. Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** The dream had been 10 years in the making. On March 26th, 2020 after five and half years, almost 45,000nm sailed (from France), and 35 countries visited, we crossed our wake sailing into Antigua and officially completed our world circumnavigation. It wasn't actually suppose to be this way. We had plans to sail into a different country and then go on a short sail with family and friends to cross our wake. But COVID got in the way, shutting down countries in the Caribbean during the middle of our passage and necessitating a change in destination. Still, nothing could take away from the excitement of this moment. Thanks for joining us on this incredible journey.
