Winter prep continues aboard Arabella in Corner Brook, Newfoundland—and this week it’s time to build a proper tent over the housetop before shrink wrap goes on. With help from fellow adventurers Lina Chu (a Vietnamese-Ukrainian photographer) and her partner Peter, Steve frames a structure designed to keep out snow while still letting light in all winter—using a clear tarp section in the middle and blue shrink wrap on the ends. After the framing is up and the plan is set, the crew takes a break for an off-the-beaten-path adventure: a windy hike to check out a nearby shipwreck—the MSC Baltic III— where an enormous cable-and-winch system has been rigged to move gear back and forth to the wreck. From sawdust and screw guns to massive chains and stormy coastal views, this episode is equal parts practical boat life and Newfoundland exploration—with the final stretch of the 2025 season coming fast. In this video, I spend a second day sailing beautiful Angostura Reservoir near Hot Springs, South Dakota. Angostura is a state recreation area in the southwest corner of the state about 6 hours from Colorado Springs. They have a great group of local Precision sailboat owners with several P-18s, P-21s and a P-23 among the fleet. The reservoir boasts 4,700 surface acres, sandy beaches, a well-protected marina, public restrooms and much steadier sailing winds than where I normally sail in the Rocky Mountains. Join us in Rebak Marina, Malaysia, as we take on an extensive series of repairs and upgrades to bring our boat back to top condition. What began as a routine haul-out quickly turned into a major project when we discovered significant corrosion on the prop shaft. This unexpected setback required us to dismantle the C-drive and arrange for the shaft to be fully rebuilt. Alongside the mechanical work, we completed a wide range of maintenance tasks essential for long-term reliability and performance. This included sanding, cleaning, and applying fresh antifoul to the hull, as well as polishing and waxing both the topsides and the hull sides. We carried out fibreglass repairs, fitted a new windlass motor, galvanised the anchor and chain, replaced the guard rail, and tidied the safety netting.The bow thruster and main propellor were also both serviced as usual. To improve safety and electrical grounding, we installed a new bonding strap and rebonded the propeller shaft. We also upgraded our ageing flexible solar panels, stitched the coverings for the dinghy chaps and spray hood, and ensured every detail was ready for the season ahead. After several months of continuous work, we managed to complete the refit just in time for a relaunch before Christmas. This video offers a full look at the process, the challenges we faced, and the steps required to restore the boat for the adventures to come. This week aboard our sailboat we hit a huge milestone in the refit — installing the sail drives, mounting the props, testing a new eco-friendly rudder paint, and moving the engines into place using a DIY bridge crane we built ourselves. It was a big week of progress and one of our most satisfying yet. ⚓ Project 1: Installing the Sail Drives With the mounting surfaces prepped and aligned, we finally lowered the sail drives into position and secured them — a major step toward getting this boat back in the water. ⚓ Project 2: Installing the Propellers Once the drives were in, we fitted the props and torqued everything to spec. Another big checkmark on the list. ⚓ Project 3: Painting the Rudders with F2 Eco We tested F2 Eco, a new opalescent white marine coating that’s just entering the recreational yacht market. It looks stunning and promises environmental benefits — we’ll be watching closely to see how it performs. ⚓ Project 4: Moving the Engines Into Place To move the engines into their homes and bolt them to the sail drives, we built a DIY bridge crane out of Unistrut and used a compact chain hoist from Amazon. It worked beautifully and made this huge job manageable. The tide is high, and it’s haul-out day for Arabella—but only briefly. This week, Steve and Robin bring the boat ashore in Corner Brook, Newfoundland for a quick mid-winter inspection and to remove their feathering propeller for its scheduled 2–3 year service. After checking the hull, addressing a few barnacle patches, and learning a thing or two about worm shoes, Arabella goes right back into the water where she’ll stay for the rest of the winter. Steve installs a temporary anode to protect the prop shaft, gives the bottom a fast scrub, and walks us through what held up well (and what didn’t) after a season of cruising from the Keys to Newfoundland. In this episode, Berthon International’s Sue Grant is joined by Alan Baines, Managing Director of Berthon USA, to unpack refit trends, pricing reality, and why some yachts are quietly selling while others sit and gather dust. They begin in Palma, where Berthon’s refit and service operation is busier than ever, but the profile of work has shifted. The focus now is on seaworthiness, safety and essential maintenance, not teak decks and shiny cosmetics. Owners are spending to keep boats safe and moving, not to win beauty contests. Across the Atlantic, the US brokerage market is surprisingly active, helped by one key factor: realistic sellers. Alan explains that where owners accept genuine market value, yachts are changing hands. Where they cling to 2022 pricing, they simply do not. Overpriced yachts remain a major drag on the market, often the result of brokers over promising to secure the listing in the first place. That leads to one of the central themes of this episode. The market is more diverse and specialised than ever, and no broker can credibly be an expert in every segment. Choosing someone who truly understands your type of yacht may not support an over optimistic asking price, but it dramatically improves the chances of a sale within a sensible time frame. Price remains the main driver of deals. Extra equipment and long option lists rarely raise the headline number. They make a yacht easier to sell, not inherently worth more. In a cautious, cost conscious environment, buyers reward value, not gadget count. Presentation also matters. With a good choice of yachts on the market, buyers are deeply project averse. Cluttered interiors, obvious deferred maintenance and “fixer upper” listings are sticking. Clean, de personalised, well prepared yachts are the ones that get serious viewings and offers. Location is the final, often overlooked, factor. As winter bites and charter flights shut down, anything parked in a hard to reach corner of the Med or Caribbean becomes difficult to show. If a visit involves multiple connections and an overnight stay, most buyers will simply not go. Until flight schedules resume in spring, badly located yachts are at a real disadvantage. Across the conversation, Sue and Alan keep circling back to seven simple truths that define this market right now: 1.Refit demand is strong, but focused on safety and seaworthiness. 2.In the USA, deals are happening where sellers accept true market pricing. 3.There are still too many overpriced yachts, often the result of over promising to win listings. 4.Specialist brokers who know a segment deeply give owners the best chance of a timely sale. 5.Yachts are selling on price. Extra kit helps them sell, but does not add real value. 6.Poorly presented yachts are being left behind. They have a great group of local Precision sailboat owners with several P-18s, P-21s and a P-23 among the fleet. The reservoir boasts 4,700 surface acres, sandy beaches, a well-protected marina, public restrooms and much steadier sailing winds than where I normally sail in the Rocky Mountains.
