In this episode, I arrive at the marina to discover my Torqeedo outboard has been wrecked by a severe wind storm. It wasn't so much the 40 mph winds as it was the direction of the winds--directly into the marina. According to the marina staff, there were 3-4 foot waves rolling right over the breakwater and swamping all the marina docks. Several boats were damaged and the only other sailboat at the lake broke from its mooring ball and ended up against the shore. I survey the damage and do a detailed inspection of the boat to make sure everything else is okay. Then I search for and order the replacement parts required for repairs. This incident really has me wondering if keeping my sailboat in a marina in this volatile part of Colorado is sustainable. There's a reason this marina only has 12 slips and I've been the only sailboat to ever rent a slip here. Maybe it's time to become a daysailor? Is the boat market finally crashing? In 2026, the used boat market is in free fall. Prices are collapsing, inventory is piling up, and dealers are slashing price tags on nearly-new vessels just to stop the bleeding. The pandemic boat boom is officially over, and the hangover is brutal. In this video, we expose the 5 Critical Factors driving this massive market correction: Dealer Panic: Why barely-used boats are being sold for pennies on the dollar. The Inventory Glut: How the post-pandemic oversupply left thousands of boats with no buyers. Desperate Sellers: Why owners are racing to the bottom to offload their "money pits." Hidden Costs: The rising price of insurance, docking, and maintenance that is forcing sales. The Opportunity: What this crash means for savvy buyers looking for the deal of a lifetime. If you are thinking of buying or selling a boat in 2026, you cannot afford to miss this analysis. ⏱️ CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro: The Market in Free Fall 01:01 1. Why Dealers Are Slashing Prices 02:56 2. Welcome back to the bilges! This week, we're deep in the design phase of a problem every boat owner faces: the shower floor. Forget standard construction—on a boat, you're battling changing trim, mandatory inspection hatches, and the nightmare of a failed pump flooding the bilge. We break down our custom solution, designed from scratch. In this episode, we cover: • The core challenge: creating proper drainage fall on a level base. • Why the pump must be in a separate compartment (and the "floating lid" logic). • Designing an integrated inspection hatch with a gutter and drain. • Our "valley" solution to handle the boat's fore/aft trim. • From Cardboard Assisted Design (CAD) to computer modeling. The original saloon cushions sucked — hard foam and worn-out covers that really didn't make for a comfortable home. So much of this hardstand stay has been about finally doing the projects we couldn't while warranty was happening around us, and now, it's time for the cushions. This video covers the entire process of making a saloon cushion, from initial foam work to the final fit. To get it right, I went with high-quality, comfortable foam and outdoor fabric, because yacht DIY is only worth it if the results actually last. If you’re looking into sailboat DIY upholstery, hopefully, the insights into our fabric choices and assembly help you out. It's not always perfect, but the comfort and longevity really are going to be a game changer for life on board. Can production boats actually make good cruising boats? I recently stepped aboard a nearly new Hanse 588, and I’ll be honest—it was huge, beautiful, modern, and incredibly appealing. And it raised a question I hear all the time from sailors planning to cruise: Are production boats actually good cruising boats—or just good marina boats? In this Sailing Truth Show, we take an honest, experience-based look at production cruising sailboats without the usual forum nonsense. No bashing. No blind praise. Just a clear discussion of where production boats shine, where they fall short, and why smart sailors often disagree on this topic. We’ll talk about: What “cruising” really means—and why that word causes so much confusion Why production boats are so attractive to modern sailors Where comfort, space, and convenience genuinely matter Where capability, structure, and motion start to matter more When production boats make a lot of sense—and when they don’t We’ll also look at real-world examples and listings to show how to evaluate boats beyond marketing language, specs, or dockside opinions. This isn’t about telling you what boat to buy. It’s about helping you think clearly about the kind of cruising you actually want to do—and what tradeoffs you’re making, whether you realize it or not. #boatfoolssailing #boatoftheyear #usedsailboats #sailing Buy a New Sailboat — or Go Used for Half the Price? EP 146 Every year, the sailing world celebrates the Boat of the Year winners — innovative designs, cutting-edge technology, and eye-watering price tags. But here’s the question most sailors quietly ask: do you really need a brand-new boat to go sailing? In this episode of BoatFools Sailing, we take five 2026 Boat of the Year winners and compare them—loosely and honestly—to used sailboats you could buy for roughly half the price. This isn’t about bashing new boats. Many of them are excellent. It is about showing what smart money can buy in the used sailboat market—and why proven designs, solid refits, and real-world ownership often deliver more sailing for fewer dollars. We compare: -A modern performance cruiser vs a proven coastal cruiser and a legendary one-design -A high-performance trimaran vs fast monohull alternative and a use trimaran -A cruising catamaran vs serious monohull passagemaker and a used Cat -A serious mid-range cruiser vs its used doppelgänger -A luxury bluewater yacht vs a Maine-built classic CHAPTERS: 00:00 Intro - 5 Boats of The Year vs Their Half-Price Used Counterparts 01:30 The First 30 VS Oceanis 323 and Melges 32 06:35 The Dragonfly 36 VS J122 and Dragonfly 35 12:43 The Excess 13 VS Tartan 4700 and Fountaine Pajot Lipari 41 18:39 The Jeaneau 415 VS The Jeaneau 419 and the Bristol 47.7 21:51 The Wauquiez 55 VS The Lyman-Morse 65 25:45 Final Thoughts - which would we pick? Which would you pick? Along the way, we talk about value, ownership reality, depreciation, maintenance, and why keeping good boats sailing matters—not just for your wallet, but for the future of sailing itself. 💬 Which would you choose—new boat hype or smart money? In this episode, we sail into Arenys de Mar, a small marina and coastal town we knew very little about before arriving. As is often the case in sailing life, we never quite know what to expect from these smaller stops — but Arenys de Mar surprises us in the best way. What was meant to be a quick two-day visit quickly turns into four as we settle into marina life, explore the town, and enjoy the relaxed local atmosphere. We wander the streets, soak up the charm of this Catalan seaside town, and catch up with fellow sailors we’ve met through Facebook and the wider cruising community. While we’re here, Helios finally gets a much-needed wash — always a satisfying job after weeks on the water — before we continue our journey down the Spanish coast. If you enjoy authentic sailing adventures, real cruising decisions, marina life, and discovering lesser-known coastal towns, this episode is for you. ⚓ In this episode: Sailing the Spanish coast Marina life in Arenys de Mar Exploring a small Catalan seaside town Meeting other cruising sailors Boat maintenance & giving Helios a proper wash Episode S03E41 Recorded: Late September 2025 Support Our Journey: 🔗 Check out www.sailinghelios.com for exclusive behind-the-scenes content 📸 Follow us on Instagram for updates: https://www.instagram.com/sailinghelios2023/ 📸 Follow us on Facebook for updates: https://www.facebook.com/groups/sailinghelios 4K Video Chapters: 00:00 Bugger, we forgot to stow the dinghy 03:54 Best docking ever! 09:08 Exploring Arenys de Mar 15:00 We forgot to leave 18:07 It's finished! 19:10 Washing the boat

My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog. Now, I’m exploring a new chapter, having jumped aboard my partner’s Hallberg Rassy Rasmus with Boga and his Australian Kelpie, Jango. The camera gear finally gave up the ghost. It’s dead. New kit is on order, but that’s the reality of a DIY operation—sometimes the tech fails before the spirit does. Beyond the dead pixels, we’ve been in the trenches with Bella. Our pup’s dealing with a pinched nerve and a rough back, so we’ve been focused on getting her back on her feet. Add in the quiet of an empty nest and a much-needed tactical reset, and we’ve been "off-grid" for a minute. We haven’t forgotten you. New gear drops tomorrow, a haircut is in the works, and we’re back in the wire next weekend. Traded the lawnmower for a salt breeze, and we’re not looking back. Stay tuned.
Design, Models & Real-World Ownership Tradeoffs Which Hylas Fits Your Cruising Plans? Hosted by David Walters Yachts President Josh McLean and DWY Sales Director Erik Haaland. Buying (or moving up within) the Hylas fleet is rarely about “bigger is better.” It’s about fit—how the boat’s design choices translate into the way you’ll actually cruise: day-to-day handling, comfort at anchor, passagemaking confidence, maintenance load, and long-term satisfaction. This practical, experience-driven session breaks down the major Hylas models and generations through the lens of real ownership—not brochure claims. We’ll unpack how layout, displacement, sail plan, and systems complexity change the experience underway and at rest, and why two boats that look similar on paper can feel radically different over a season (or a crossing). Topics include: Hylas design philosophy—and how it has evolved over time Key differences between major models (46, 48, 49, 54, 56, 57, 63, & 70) Performance vs. comfort tradeoffs—and how they shape cruising style Crew requirements, systems complexity, and maintenance realities Matching the right Hylas to coastal cruising, offshore passagemaking, or liveaboard plans Common “why this model” decision points owners cite after living aboard and cruising Who this webinar is for: Buyers deciding between Hylas models (or between “classic” and “modern” Hylas generations) Current owners considering a move up/down in size Cruisers who want to reduce surprises by understanding ownership tradeoffs before they buy About David Walters Yachts & Hylas David Walters Yachts has built a long-standing reputation as the go-to brokerage for Hylas—not just for helping clients buy and sell these yachts, but for advising on the practical realities that matter once you actually own one: how different models behave offshore, what systems complexity really means over time, and how to align a boat’s layout and sailing characteristics with the way you plan to cruise. This webinar is designed to give you a clear, experience-backed framework for choosing the Hylas that best matches your cruising goals, your crew plan, and your desired “complexity level”—so you can buy with confidence and enjoy the ownership experience you’re aiming for. #Hylas #HylasYachts #Hylas46 #Hylas48 #Hylas49 #Hylas54 #Hylas56 #Hylas57 #Hylas63 #Hylas70 #BluewaterCruising 🌊 #OffshoreSailing 🌎 #Passagemaking ⛵️ #Liveaboard 🏝️ #CruisingLife #SailingWebinar 🎥 #YachtOwnership #YachtBuying #YachtBrokerage #DavidWaltersYachts #DWY #JoshMcLean #SailboatTalk #YachtDesign #SailingLifestyle
After a long holiday break back home in Massachusetts, Steve, Robin, and Akiva make the 1,100-mile journey back north to Arabella and winter life in Newfoundland. With big plans for backcountry skiing and ice climbing along the island’s northwest coast, it’s time to finish some critical prep. This episode covers the build of a second custom sled bag using a newly acquired Sailrite sewing machine—a test run before tackling major canvas projects on Arabella. Steve walks through the design, materials, and sewing techniques that will make hauling winter climbing gear into the mountains faster and easier. With new skis and rare Silvretta bindings dialed in, the crew heads out for a recon mission along the Fox River toward the Lewis Hills. But a sudden storm and strong winds nearly derail the season when one ski goes straight overboard and sinks into the harbor. What follows is an unexpected winter recovery mission, a boat launch in January, and a reminder of how quickly things can go sideways in cold conditions. The episode wraps with a first look at the trail system, wildlife tracks in the snow, and early planning for multi-day backcountry trips—setting the stage for winter adventures to come. In this episode: • Driving back to Newfoundland in winter • DIY sled bag/pulk gear sewing • Sailrite machine setup & techniques • Silvretta ski bindings for ice climbing approaches • Losing (and recovering) a ski overboard • Winter harbor recovery mission • Trail recon toward the Lewis Hills • Preparing for multi-day backcountry travel -------------------------- Episode 375 Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! #vento #meteo #barcavela #vela #nautica #vitainbarca #faidate #diynautico #mare #passionemare #inbarccondario #lusso #forum #dibattito #passeggiata ___________________________________________________________ 🇺🇸🇬🇧 The walk along the docks of Marina di Ravenna continues. In this second part, you’ll see five more boats, viewed only from the outside: hull shapes, deck layouts, and small details that tell a story even without stepping on board. It’s that slow marina stroll where you stop, look, compare, and start imagining. At the end, there’s also a bonus boat, spotted almost by chance, and definitely worth a look. A calm, immersive video for anyone who enjoys observing boats from the dock and getting inspired before casting off. #wind #sailboat #sailing #nautical #lifeonboard #diyboat #sea #ocean #inbarccondario #walking ___________________________________________________________ 📬Per richieste commerciali/proposte di lavoro/collaborazioni: 📩 dario.bevilacqua.011@gmail.com Se hai consigli, come sempre nei commenti puoi dirmi che cosa ne pensi! After years of problems with our many water pumps on Fair Isle, unreliability, noise and constant maintenance, we were impressed when we came across the display of Marco pumps at METS in Amsterdam this year. They had all their pumps hooked up to pump water, lots of water! They were whisper quiet in operation, seemed to move enormous amounts of water with great pressure and had no flimsy rubber and plastic parts. These are 'gear pumps' made with bronze gears, no rubber diaphragms that have to be bashed up and down by cams until they self destruct! We don't accept payment for producing these review type videos as we think that would turn us into salespeople, but we did get a deal on this pump from Marco at the show so YT require us to reflect that and tick the promotions box. In all honesty, we would have bought one of these pumps in any case. We may not have gone for the biggest model as we do have to watch our spending and these pumps are not cheap. But we have been through four pumps in 9 years on Fair Isle have had to buy boxes of spares in between to keep them running, so that adds up to a significant expense as well. Also, we have had 9 years of having to put up with noisy inefficient pumps so frankly we wish we had spent the money earlier. You may have seen in the episode when we fitted this pump that it detected there was a problem with the boat's system. Air was somehow getting in to the system at the manifold and was being fed to the pump. This had probably contributed to some of the problems we had had in the past so it's good that the Marco pump is clever enough to show there is a problem. It seems gear pumps are more sensitive to air getting into the system and the pump will shut down and give you a warning light. This allowed me to find the problem, a stuck one way valve on the outlet of our water manifold, and fix it ( I just removed it, the Marco pump doesn't need it.) It also doesn't need the accumulator which is good because that's just another thing to go wrong. We are on our second. So If you're fed up with inferior pumps then Marco is a great option. Why pay "mechanic markups" when you can find a diamond in the rough on Facebook Marketplace? 💎🛞 The shop wanted to charge us a fortune for new tires, but we’re building this 1973 VW Bus on a $4,000 budget, not a $16,000 one! I’m sharing how I scouted the perfect set of tires online and what I looked for to make sure they were safe and road-ready. Pro-Tip for Marketplace Tire Hunting: Always check the DOT date code on the sidewall! Tires might look new, but if they’ve been sitting in a garage for 10 years, they aren't safe for the road—especially for a heavy bus. In this week's episode, I go back to my first sail with my new custom sails from Point Sails of San Diego. In 2022, Point Sails built a custom severe weather (80%) jib for my Precision 18. So with my OEM sails getting baggy, I decided to have them build a new custom mainsail and 100% working jib as well. My new sails are made from a heavier 6oz Dacron for the heavy mountain winds I sail in. The mainsail has 2 reefing points, 4 battens, a custom logo and custom blue and white colors. The working jib is a crimson color and includes leech lines and foot lines. Throughout the video I share thoughts and observations about my new sails and sailing in mountain winds in general. The winds on this day were gusting up to 16 mph. Subscribe and follow @ColoradoSailing on YouTube for more original sailing videos, gear, boat maintenance, sailing tips and travel content as I sail my Precision 18 trailer sailer and Precision 16 sailing dinghy in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota. #sailingchannel #coloradosailing #sailing #mountainsailing #extremesports

In this video, Mark from Nomad Boat Building walks through the wood lamination process for wooden boat construction, focusing on laminating a stem and transom knee using West System Epoxies. Laminating is a critical technique in traditional and modern boatbuilding, especially when creating strong, stable parts with tight curves that would otherwise require steam bending. Mark explains when and why to laminate, how to design effective lamination molds, how to choose veneer thickness, and how to calculate the correct amount of epoxy for a successful glue-up. You’ll see step-by-step demonstrations of: * Building lamination molds (solid and truss-style) * Cutting consistent veneers safely * Using backing bands and clamps correctly * Performing dry clamp runs * Applying epoxy for optimal penetration * Managing spring-back and final cleanup This is a practical, real-world guide aimed at wooden boat builders, DIY boat projects, and woodworkers looking to master structural laminations for marine use. If you’re building a strip-planked boat, restoring a wooden hull, or learning traditional boatbuilding techniques, this video will give you the confidence to laminate parts that are strong, fair, and long-lasting. 🛠️ Sponsored by West System EpoxiesChosen for their strength, reliability, and long open working time—ideal for complex laminations. Epic Navigator This video documents a real single-handing sailing operation, from preparation to execution. The boat was prepared the day before in Athens. Before sunrise the following morning, I departed alone, raised anchor single-handed, and documented the process using a drone and a 360 camera (Insta360 x5). You can get the camera here: https://store.insta360.com/product/x5?utm_term=INRJD9E USE CODE : INRJD9E to get a discount at the checkout Along the passage, the video also captures the destinations and coastline we pass, offering a real sense of route, environment, and conditions. The journey continued to Almyra Shipyard in Agioi Theodoroi, where the boat was hauled out for winter maintenance. This is real-world single-handing — focused on routine, risk management, and decision-making when sailing alone. No demonstrations, no shortcuts, just practical seamanship in real conditions. After more than a year with our mast down, we’re finally pushing hard toward re-stepping — or so we thought. In this episode, we dive back into the final stages of our complete mast rebuild, a project that has included stripping the old paint, full rewiring, new clutches, new lights, and cleaning and servicing every single piece of hardware. This week was all about getting the mast as close to ready as possible for crane day. We wire the masthead VHF antenna, anchor light, and weather instrument, then tackle one of the most challenging parts of mast work: running lines internally. To get past the obstacles inside the mast, we break out an RC car to help pull messenger lines through — an unconventional solution that actually works. From there, we reassemble the furler, reinstall the spreaders, wire in the spreader lights, and hang the standing rigging back in place. Everything is coming together — except the final step. We can’t secure the lower ends of the standing rigging yet because we’re still waiting on our new turnbuckles. Then comes the gut punch. Two days before our scheduled crane appointment, the turnbuckles finally arrive… and they’re wrong. The threads are too large, they won’t fit, and there’s no workaround. The crane is canceled. The re-step is postponed. And after a year of work, we’re absolutely crushed. This is the reality of long refits — progress, momentum, and sometimes heartbreaking setbacks right at the finish line. If you’ve rebuilt a mast, dealt with rigging delays, or lived through parts arriving almost right, you’ll understand this one. Thanks for following along as we keep pushing forward. We’ll get there — even if it takes a little longer than planned. ☝More about us, our adventures, and how we do all this on our website. Everyone asks, "How much does the boat cost?" Almost nobody asks, "How much does the electricity cost?" Tonight on the Sailing Truth Show, we are breaking down the specific boat systems that drain cruising budgets the fastest. It’s not the hull that bankrupts sailors—it’s the upgrades. We’re talking about the "Lithium Trap," the generator nightmare, and why making your boat "too safe" might actually be making it too expensive to sail. I’m also preparing for a massive interview with the legendary Nigel Calder (author of Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual). I have a list of difficult questions from my Patrons, but tonight, I’m opening the floor to YOU. In this Livestream: The Big 3 Money Pits: Why generators, watermakers, and complex electrics often cost more to own than to buy. Our haul out revealed a classic Chesapeake and ICW problem for a sailing family living aboard a catamaran. In this sailing vlog, we uncover a series of haul out surprises and challenges after discovering mismatched zinc and aluminum anodes combined with frequent sailing through brackish water. Some anodes were badly fouled while others were disappearing far too quickly — a clear sign something wasn’t right. With the boat out of the water, I clean up the props, inspect the running gear, and replace the saildrive seals as part of essential maintenance on our Royal Cape catamaran. We also talk through how different water types — salt, brackish, and fresh — affect anode choice and corrosion rates for liveaboard sailors cruising places like the Chesapeake Bay and ICW. In addition to underwater work, I start modifying a used tower-in-a-box solar arch to fit our boat. It’s not a drop-in solution, so I walk through the challenges of adapting it as part of our ongoing solar and electrical upgrades. ⚓ This episode focuses on the realities of liveaboard catamaran life, preventative maintenance, and solving unexpected problems while cruising as a family sailing full-time. Topics covered: • Catamaran haul out inspection • Zinc vs aluminum anodes in brackish water • Chesapeake Bay & ICW corrosion issues • Saildrive seal replacement • Prop cleaning and maintenance • Solar arch modification 📍 Cape Canaveral, FL | Royal Cape 500 Catamaran

The Art of Maintaining Teak Trim on a Sailboat: https://www.practical-sailor.com/subscriber-only/the-art-of-maintaining-teak-trim-on-a-sailboat Most sailboat owners assume their bilge pump is a reliable last line of defense. It’s installed, it runs when tested, and it’s easy to believe it will work when water is coming in. Unfortunately, real-world bilge pump failures are far more common than most owners realize. In this video, we take a close, practical look at why bilge pumps fail at the worst possible moment. From misleading pump capacity ratings and voltage drop to float switch failures, wiring corrosion, poor hose routing, and maintenance issues that quietly reduce performance, this is the information every boat owner should understand before an emergency happens. We also explain why simply installing a bigger bilge pump doesn’t always make a boat safer, how discharge plumbing and check valves can dramatically reduce flow, and why redundancy and proper installation matter more than advertised gallons-per-hour ratings. Whether you sail coastal waters or offshore, understanding how your bilge pump system really works can buy you valuable time when it matters most. If you own a sailboat, are refitting an older boat, or are planning upgrades to improve onboard safety, this video will help you make smarter decisions about bilge pumps, wiring, switches, and maintenance. bilge pump failure sailboat bilge pump boat safety systems bilge pump wiring float switch failure marine electrical systems boat maintenance sailboat maintenance bilge pump capacity boat flooding prevention offshore sailing safety bilge pump installation boat refit tips marine corrosion practical sailor Practical Sailor is your trusted resource for reviews of sailboats and sailing gear. https://www.practical-sailor.com Chat with us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/PracticalSailor/
