It’s a technical monster of a boat that requires an army of specialists, technicians, engineers, and programmers just to get sailing. It’s akin to Formula 1 on the water and the team required to get the boat sailing is immense. But even the best prepared get caught out and it’s a known fact that AC75’s bite as we saw so spectacularly in Auckland. Here in Barcelona, it has been the Swiss team’s turn to experience a capsize. The team made Adolfo Carrau, the affable Alinghi Red Bull Racing Design Co-ordinator (formerly of American Magic), available for comment after the lengthy sailing session and he was pleased with what he saw: “every day on the water is valuable…today was the ‘real day one.’ We were trying to remember what the ‘real day one’ looked like in the previous campaign and it looked a bit like this one.” Speaking about the foils Carrau continued: “We know both foils pretty well from the last campaign with Team New Zealand and American Magic so we know what to expect. This hull shape will track in a predictable manner and the extremities of the boat are all within easy reach. With a little bit of training the bow thruster can be combined with the motor to achieve very close quarters manoeuvring that many people would not expect for a boat of this size. You can literally slide in sideways between two other boats! This is just a quick demo as I had 5 mins spare and some batteries remaining in the cameras but if you like this style of content there is a LOT more to explain. But with a clear understanding, a calm mind and good practise you will be able to achieve miracles when it comes to parking this Saxdor 270 and I'd be happy to teach you if enough people are interested in learning? Sailing Free Spirit. Today we take out the broken and old Fireplace that was put in the boat back in 1974. We have deemed this a fire hazard and since there was several pieces of tile that were missing, we removed it. It gave us a run for our money. Took Nancy a full day to just remove the screws, only to find out that there were more screws holding in place… Andy finally took his turn and gave it a good whack! Also, tackled putting in the first electrical panel so we can start to figure out and plan for usage needed.
