The 2009 Snipe World Championship in San Diego was everything competitors thought it would be. The winds were light but never so light that you could not have great tactical racing. The competition was intense with victory in question right up until the last day. Snipes take their motto very seriously. Serious Sailing, Serious Fun. The organizers made sure that there were plenty of opportunities for Serious Fun on shore from scavenger hunts to the Awards Banquet, you rarely find Snipers not having serious fun. Young Snipers made a mark at this regatta too. Two of the top 10 finishers were almost young enough to be the grandsons of some of the competitors. That bodes well for the future of the Class as more young sailors explore tactical one design sailing.

Alexandre Tinoco has three bothers who sail Snipes, but he grew up in a family where no one sailed at all. He's been sailing Snipes for 10 years, the first five as crew and the last five as skipper. This year at the Snipe World Championship in San Diego, Alexandre placed 5th out of 49 competitors. He beat out such strong Snipers as Augie Diaz, George Szabo, Xandi Paradeda and Manu Hens. Alexandre had a few words about why the Snipe is a good boat for the sailor looking to get into a good competitive class. He's a perfect example of why young sailors can excel in this class with minimal expense and maximum help from others in the class, including the three generations of the Diaz family currently sailing.

Brainard Cooper has been involved in keeping the Snipe a strict one design boat for many years. He's seen the class make many changes to the boat. The driving force for those changes has always been: "Will it make the class more competitive and is it a change the sailors want?" He's been involved in the change to the hankless jib, the reduction in weight to the center board and the overall reduction in weight to the boat. There was even a time, when the Snipe Class thought it might introduce a spinnaker. That was an idea whose time has never come.

Giorgio Brezich has been sailing Snipes since he was 6 years old, more than 60 years ago. He's done just about every job possible in the Snipe Class from European Secretary to Commodore and now the Rules Chairman, as well as winning his share of competitions along the way. In his youth he won the Italian Junior National Championship multiple times with multiple crews. Juniors sailors coming into the Class can learn about the culture from those who've come up in the Class before them. Everyone takes the Class moto - Serious Sailing, Serious Fun - seriously. You race competitively on the water but the fun you have on shore is just as important to the members of the Snipe Class.

Jimmie Lowe hails from the Bahamas where the wind blows across the turquoise water. The Bahmas host the last leg of the Snipe Winter Circuit that begins in Clearwater, travels to Miami for the Don Q and ends in Nassau. Jimmie and his wife Lori have traveled around the world sailing Snipes. They always look at the next regatta as an opportunity to catch up with other members of the Snipe family. And just like any family, they take a lot of pride is seeing just how well the current crop of Jr. Snipers are doing -- Nick Voss from Florida finished 8th in the Snipe Worlds in San Diego. The bottom line is that for Jimmie, the Snipe Class lives up to its motto: Serious Sailing, Serious Fun.
