HOBIE said FISH THE WORLD and we did. (Part 1 - South Carolina Hank Parker, Australia) We landed and released four-foot Pike in the shadows of castles in France and beneath the windmills of Holland. We laughed a lot and learned about fishing the French Broad and the farm ponds of North Carolina with Bass Fishing Hall of Fame member Hank Parker. In Australia we landed fish we had never heard of like the slate grey Sooty Grunter and fish well never forget like the Barramundi. Join us as we pedal the Pro Angler and the fleet of Hobie Kayaks on the Oxbows of the Mississippi, the Lower Owens in the Eastern Sierras, the Louisiana bayous, Corsica, and down the west coast of Baja Mexico.

Ken and Sylvianne Roberts bought their Krogen 48' North Sea prior to retirement and share what they love about the boat, the Kadey-Krogen service, and the Krogen family. The boat is big enough for them but also a size they can handle on their own, she's capable of cruising offshore, and she is built by a company who pays attention to detail as well as customer service.

John Rose started sailing Snipes in 1948 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. That was right after World War II and people were just beginning to think about what they could do for fun. Over the next 10 years the fleet exploded from 8 boats to over 50 and John started winning races and then regattas in the mid-West. John's always loved wooden Snipes and he saw the change coming when the fiberglass Snipe was introduced in 1954. It took 13 years of constant development before the first glass boat won a National Championship in 1967. His love of wooden boats is still there. He worked hard to make the Wooden Snipe Rally at this year's Snipe Masters a success. There were wooden boats there that had been lovingly restored to better than new condition with owners who could tell you just exactly what the pedigree of their boat was and the changes from the original construction made to it over the years.

Woody Norwood started sailing Snipes when he was 12 years old in the mid 50's. When he graduated to skippering his sister signed on as crew and together they weighed in at around 120 pounds. That was the perfect weight for sailing a Snipe at the Atlanta Yacht Club. Woody got one of the first fiberglass boats in 1957. There were technical issues with those early boats but their was no beating the ease of maintaining them. They didn't require complete refinishing each winter and they didn't leak when you put them in the water each Spring. Just like surfers, Snipes in big waves and breeze are an incredible ride. Woodys got a great story to tell about sailing off shore of Ft. Lauderdale in the late 50's.

Means Davis started sailing Snipes in Atlanta 50 years ago as a high school student. He remembers how great it was to experience sailing on a warm spring day - as opposed to running track. He's a big fan of the current group of younger Snipers who come to the class with a lot of training and experience that kids just didn't have when he started sailing. They study the boat and they use technology to make it faster all building on the groundwork of those who've been sailing Snipes for years. Means also has some good stories about traveling around the country to sail Snipes in competition with his kids.

Carl Eichenlaub started building Snipes before he started sailing them. Back when wooden boats where the only boats, Carl made Snipes in San Diego starting with an order of 5 boats from the Mission Bay Yacht Club. He started sailing them when one of his woodworkers wanted a Snipe but needed someone to drive it till he got the hang of racing it. Carl earned his reputation as a master boatwright the hard way. He was always available when someone needed help with their boat. In fact at the Peoria National in 1965 he took his wood plane to a boat that was an 1/8" too big at every station - the boat measured in and went on to take 3rd in the Nationals that year.

SteveSherman started sailing Snipes in Kansas City, MO. He worked on his first boat to make sure it was really ready for the season, only to find out wooden boats leak when you put them in the water. He gave up his job as an industrial engineer in order to buy Mike McLaughlin's boat building business and begin his career as a boatbuilder. Things were not always easy but the ability to handle all aspects of the business from the customer relations to the layup of the boats made it exciting. His industrial engineering background led him to work on the specific boat controls, making them easier to use and more powerful. Steve knows that Snipes are really a family. You sail with the same group for many years and they all take you into their homes and make sure you have what you need when you show up to race around the country.

Andy Pimental started thinking about Snipes in 1989 right out of college. When he finished up his Finn campaign he decided he like the comraderie of the Class and joined in. Ed Adams convince Andy to start building Snipes. He'd been working for Vanguard when he rented a garage, built the molds for his first Jibetech and started building Snipes. Along the way, there were a ton of people who had ideas about how to make the boats faster. He looks at building Snipes as doing artwork everyday. What better job could he have?

Devoti-One International Regatta, Torbole, Lake Garda, 23-25 October 2009 The finishing positions in the Devoti-One International Regatta on Lake Garda remained uncertain until the competitors had drifted across the line of the final race. With the grand finale race counting for triple points, Andrea Giammarinis speed in the dying breeze off the Torbole shore proved decisive, as his race victory converted to overall victory in the regatta. It was a similar story for Alberto Ferrari who seized the advantage when two of the series leaders fell into a windless hole just metres from the finish. Ferrari screeched - or rather ghosted - past local Olympic Star sailor Silvio Santoni and British visitor Andy Rice who had gone into the final race level-pegging for the lead. In the end Santoni and Rice were relegated to third and fourth overall. The regatta was a first test for the weight equalisation of the D-1 boat, with Gianmarini and Ferrari both weighing in at just under 80kg while Santoni and Rice were 94kg and 88kg respectively. The gennaker requires sailors to hike out downwind in any more than 6 knots of breeze, meaning the lightweights dont generate much of a speed advantage while upwind the wider wings keep them in the hunt alongside the heavyweights. British competitor Adrian Brunton was the heaviest competitor at 102kg, and he won one of the lightest races of the weekend, although he too fell victim to the vagaries of the final run in the all-important triple points race. With 20 sailors having competed in Torbole, class founder and builder Luca Devoti anticipates fleets of 40 to 50 boats for the five-regatta Tour of Italy series being planned for 2010. Sailors are responding well to the boat and to the format. Fewer races means you dont have to be Superman to win in the D-1 class, and Im really pleased by the spirit of fun that people have shown here in Torbole. This winter we will be hard at work building and selling more boats throughout Europe, and we are just about to ship our first boats to the USA, so the D-1 looks set for worldwide popularity.
