After diving in Maldives the 5th time, we had the impression of an increasing number of young sharks, hopefully the first sign of the shark protection. We dove most time in the vicinity of Vilamendhoo. We saw the Manta rays and the whale shark near Madivaru, Rangali, the grey reef sharks at Hafza Thila, North Ari. Kaikias é fita azul em sua primeira regata O verão que se vai leva consigo os ventos firmes e quentes do nordeste, mas ainda é muito cedo para a chegada das frentes frias com os sopros do sul. O que fica neste meio tempo são os ventos que rondam, brincam de esconde-esconde e reaparecem pelo outro lado, às vezes mais fracos, às vezes mais fortes. O sábado, 3 de março, foi uma mostra das condições atmosféricas que irão predominar ao redor da Ilha de Santa Catarina até meados de abril. Nesta loteria, o Kaikias foi para a sua primeira largada em uma regata, ainda sem adversários na classe C30, e correu com base em um certificado teste, passível de revisão, gerado para a Classe ORC Internacional. A regata Fortalezas, primeira etapa da Copa Veleiros de Oceano, competição organizada pelo Iate Clube de Santa Catarina, contou com um número de barcos muito inferior ao esperado, principalmente na classe onde o Kaikias poderia medir seu desempenho. Nossos adversários mais próximos na água se resumiram ao Feitiço (Fast 395, que corre BRA-RGS), Kiron (Skipper 30, ORCi) e Seu Menino/Katana (Multimar 32, ORCi). Fizeram falta os Beneteau 40.7, o Catuana Kin e os demais Skipper 30 da flotilha que regularmente entra na raia para as regatas locais. O percurso de 22 milhas coloca os barcos na linha de largada montada em frente ao Forte Santana, praticamente embaixo da Ponte Hercílio Luz, bem no centro de Florianópolis. Manda os veleiros em direção Norte até a Ilha de Ratones Grande - que ostenta a Fortaleza de Santo Antônio-, e toma rumo Nordeste para uma boia em frente a Fortaleza de São José da Ponta Grossa, quase em Jurerê. A perna seguinte, direto para o Oeste, leva os barcos para os pés da Fortaleza de Santa Cruz do Anhatomirin para, em seguida, assumir o rumo Sul de volta ao Forte de Santana. Desde os primeiros pés do percurso e até cruzar a linha de chegada, o Kaikias manteve-se à frente da Flotilha. Mais afastado quando o vento acelera, mais próximo, quando as três calmarias que atingiam primeiro o Carabelli 30 ainda não haviam alcançado os barcos que vinham ao seu encalço. Sob estas condições, foi comum ver barcos muito próximos navegando na mesma direção e com velas totalmente diferentes. Enquanto precisávamos da genoa para manter o rumo, o Feitiço ostentava seu balão azul que crescia ao se olhar para a popa, para depois, novamente diminuir quando as condições permitiam o uso das mesmas velas em ambos os barcos. A última das calmarias, e que encerrou o curto reinado de um Nordeste fraco, colocou o Feitiço e o Seu Menino a bombordo do Kaikias, junto à face oeste da Ilha de Ratones Grande, a seis milhas da chegada. Marolas no mar quase espelhado anunciaram um Sudeste firme, as tripulações trocaram as velas e se prepararam para o sprint final. As velas do Feitiço receberam os primeiros sopros e as nossas um minuto depois. Seu Menino ficou preso na bolha por um pouco mais de tempo e o Kiron, mais afastado e o último a se juntar ao grupo, nem parou na calmaria. O Fast 395 orçou e passou a barlavento de Ratones Pequeno, nós arribamos e passamos afastados para fugir do embate da ilha. Já com ângulo favorável em relação a chegada, nosso oponente mais próximo desce de balão envergado enquanto nós nos mantínhamos em orça folgada. Cruzamos a linha quase cinco minutos na frente do Feitiço, doze antes do Seu Menino e com dezessete minutos de vantagem sobre o Kiron, marcando a primeira fita azul de um Carabelli 30 nas águas de Santa Catarina. Feitos os cálculos de correção de tempo pelas planilhas da ORC, Kiron vence a regata devolvendo 17 minutos corrigidos sobre o nosso tempo real, Seu Menino nos aplica mais sete minutos e fica com a segunda colocação. O Feitiço, que chegou meia hora na frente do segundo em sua classe, perde a regata por 1 minuto e meio depois de recalculados os tempos de cada um pelas regras da BRA-RGS. Daqui a três semanas, em 23 de março, data do aniversário de Florianópolis, o Guto, comandante do Feitiço, assume o leme do Corta Vento, o segundo Carabelli 30 destas águas, para a primeira regata onde dois barcos exatamente iguais correrão para ver quem chega na frente.
