Today was the kick off of the 48th running of the Congressional Cup presented by the Long Beach Yacht Club. This is the most famous match race series in the United States and has the worlds best match race skippers and vying for a chance to win the crimson blazer.

The final day of the International ROLEX Regatta brought more flawless weather as the over sixty boat fleet wrapped up this year's event.

Com Horácio Carabelli a bordo Kaikias é fita azul em Florianópolis Desta vez não foi tranquilo como na primeira regata, no início de março, (ver e ler "Jaibes e mais Jaibes"), quando o Kaikias cruzou a linha com grande vantagem sobre o segundo colocado. A presença do Zeus na raia ofereceu um desafio e tanto e um final de regata eletrizante para as duas tripulações. O Beneteau 40.7 de Inácio Vandressen só foi alcançado e ultrapassado nas ultimas das quase 17 milhas da regata Cidade de Florianópolis, segunda etapa da Copa Veleiros de Oceano, realizada na tarde de sábado, 24 de mar??o. A prova também marcou a estreia do Corta Vento, o quarto Carabelli 30 a entrar nas raias. Mas como o barco debutante ainda não recebeu o assimétrico de sua veleria, a tripulação comandada por Carlos Augusto de Matos usou a regata para se familiarizar com a nova "máquina" sabendo que não teria condições de medir forças com os outros barcos da flotilha de regateiros do Iate Clube de Santa Catarina. O aviso da Regata Cidade de Florianópolis previa início ao meio dia e percurso com largada junto à Avenida Beira Mar, no centro da cidade, e chegada próximo à sede oceânica do ICSC, em Jurerê, no norte da Ilha de Santa Catarina, depois de contornar a Ilha do Frances. As previsões dos institutos de meteorologia indicavam vento sul fraco rondando para sudeste. A configuração geográfica norte-sul da ilha fez com que o percurso para as classes C30, ORCi e BRA-RGS A tivessem, mais ou menos, sete milhas de rumo NNO, cinco milhas de NNE, três de NE e o restante de SSO. Ou seja: bastante popa, um tanto de orça folgada, um pouco de través e quase nada de contra-vento. As demais classes e os veleiros convidados para um passeio, incluindo a baleeira à vela comandada por Pier Palumbo, fariam um percurso menor, sem restrições à passagem pela Ilha de Ratones Grande e sem contornar a Ilha do Francês, perfazendo pouco mais de 13 milhas. Os do passeio largaram meia hora antes dos demais. A previsão de vento se confirmou no início da regata e o Kaikias optou por largar junto à boia e tomar o lado esquerdo da raia. A escolha rapidamente se mostrou equivocada e quando o C30 comandado por Tarcísio Mattos mudou a proa, se viu na popa de barcos de todas as classes e tamanhos. Horácio Carabelli, projetista do barco e tripulante de luxo nesta regata, mantinha um olho nos acertos da velejada e outro na tela do celular, acompanhando as atualizações da VOR, em busca de informações sobre a evolução do Telefónica que velejava no Oceano Austral, em plena Volvo Ocean Race em meio a surfadas insanas, acima dos 20 nós de velocidade e sob rajadas que ultrapassavam 50 nós. Mesmo velejando sempre com maior velocidade do que todos os demais concorrentes, o Kaikias sofria pelo ângulo do vento. Enquanto os outros navegavam em popa rasa na direção norte, o C30, envergando o assimétrico, precisava velejar de jaibes em jaibes. Galgando posições em doses homeopáticas o C30 alcançou a Ilha de Ratones Grande, seis milhas distante da largada, com apenas o Seu Menino/Katana (Multimar 32, de Fábio Filippon) e o Zeus à sua frente. O vento cresceu e, de plainada em plainada, Seu Menino/Katana cedeu a segunda colocação assim que o rumo da regata girou para norte-nordeste e a posição relativa do vento permitiu que o Carabelli 30 colocasse a proa apontada para a Ponta do Forte e partisse para cima do Beneteau 40.7. O vento Sul rodou para Leste-sueste, o Zeus tirou o balão, o Kaikias guardou o assimétrico e, em orça folgada, o C30 iniciou uma verdadeira caçada ao Beneteau por cinco milhas em direção à Ilha do Francês. A experiente e vitoriosa tripulação do Zeus vendeu caro a ponta da regata, o que só ocorreu próximo a Ilha, no final da perna, com uma passagem "por baixo dos panos", depois de algumas fechadas de porta resultantes das investidas frustradas por parte do Kaikias em passar por barlavento aproveitando a sua maior velocidade desenvolvida no través. Numa última, curta e emocionante perna da regata, com o Zeus no encalço, o Horácio sem dar um segundo de descanso para a escolta da genoa e o anemômetro batendo na casa dos 20 nós, o Kaikias cruzou a linha com pouco mais de 30 segundos de vantagem sobre o vencedor da última Olivos-Florianópolis e atual campeão brasileiro da Classe Beneteau 40.7. Depois, cervejinha no cockpit para relaxar os músculos consumidos pela 1 hora, 59 minutos e 59 segundos de regata.
