I exit the Gulf Stream which has carried me nearly 600 miles. Continuing on around Hatteras is not in the cards just now with a cold front approaching, so I will put in to Beaufort, NC. The good news is that the approaching front brings increasing southerly winds, which are perfect for sailing into Taylor Creek. Then comes the following norther to blow me back out of there. I sail to the Cape Lookout Bight to await the next weather window, a much easier place to depart from under sail. Its been a busy season on land! Yep we covered over 50,000 miles and 48 states (most more than once) in 3 months. We made tons of new memories and some amazing friendships across the entire country. My son graduated High School, We spend the summer with family and friends and focused on a sustainable future for our adventurous lifestyle. While I am amazed with what we have accomplished this year, along with all the places and things we have seen, I am still yearning for the ocean and the freedom of the sea and the wind and look forward to sharing that part of our Journey again soon!
In Fiji I am invited on ARGO. This is the mini from Christian Sauer. He explains about how he build te boat to compete in the Mini Globe Race. The Mini Globe Race covers 28,000 miles and is limited to 20 entrants from around the world. It should take around a year to complete. The McIntyre Class Globe 5.80 is a simple, affordable, safe, extreme-weather, ocean-capable, easily handled, fun to sail (and build) fully self-righting yacht! Features include basic plywood epoxy construction, bow crash box, three watertight compartments, six full frames, two watertight bulkheads, pine stringers and oak floors. The hull is covered with sustainable plantation 10mm plywood – a central bottom strip of plywood 20mm and deck covered with 8mm. The hull is then laminated with epoxy and glass. A 142° point of vanishing stability with central, strong skeg supported outboard rudder with three sets gudgeons and pintles, allowing simple effective trim tab wind vane steering. A simple overbuilt steel fabricated keel with lead bulb, two x 2m bunks (bunks on the cabin sole, or an athwartship bunk by lifting a floor panel). A secure comfortable cockpit, two transom balancing dagger boards, quick closing companionway hatch/door (Or 50 x 50 deck hatch closure) with 360-degree visibility observation cab with 1.6m headroom under and 1m headroom while sitting on a bunk.
Enjoying morning coffee on the boat. Karen was doing some jumping jacks. Steve liked watching her jump up and down in her bikini. The original lazarette seats in the cockpit were built using thin fiberglass over wood. Through the decades the fiberglass cracked letting in water to rot the wood. Both sides needed replacing. We used marine grade plywood that has a high end core among other things. Finished with a dark stain and multiple coats of exterior polyurethane with UV inhibitors. They should last for some time. Karen was bailing water out of the dinghy we had launched when guests were on board. Had a little fuel delivery problem that is maybe fixed. Replaced the part that connects the fuel hose directly to the Mercury outboard. Took a long walk in the woods to relax. Toward the end the bugs came out which hastened our return. ⛵️ This episode is all about the sailing. The day after Jeanette’s birthday Sail & Doxie https://www.youtube.com/@UCg3j6Cp-_RTS4JABFtgBDxA left the anchorage and we headed out at sea as well. Still haven’t decided if we will be at the same anchorage as Sail & Doxie or not for the next night. They are by the way sailing to the Meds and we are heading to Scotland this season. It’s a beautiful summer day, we take up the anchor, set sail, and then the rain came, and then some wind. Next day couple of days we will get are fair bit of winds as we are on a high reach in good winds constantly 20 knots gusting a bit over 30, it’s good sailing and we feel we need to push a bit to reach the island of Öland for our Midsummer celebration. We’re day sailing and each evening we tuck into a sheltered anchorage for a few hours of rest before setting off again at first light. Along the way we sail past the deepest point in the Baltic Sea, you’d never guess the depth? Join us for this wet, windy, and unforgettable stretch of Baltic sailing. During the sailing season we are filming lots, but editing will be saved for rainy days or winter downtime—so episodes will come out a bit less regularly. 📸 For real-time updates, follow us on Instagram: @bushpointsailing ⚓️ Thanks for watching, and welcome aboard! ⛵️ Welcome aboard Bushpoint Sailing!
