With spinnakers blowing up all around them, Torbjörn Törnqvist steered his Artemis Racing through the carnage of the final run of the final race to claim the RC44 Cascais Cup by single point from Igor Lah's Team CEEREF. Both Chris Bake's Team Aqua, leader going around the final mark, and Team CEEREF in third, suffered kite problems at the final top mark rounding, helping the Swedish team to prevail. But to win by just one point (even the top six were separated by just six points) after 11 races, was particularly impressive turn-around given that Artemis Racing had finished the first day of fleet racing here in the Portuguese sailing mecca in last place. After two light to moderate days, conditions turned more brutal for today's final three races. The long Atlantic swell Cascais is famous for wasn't so much in evidence today, but a particularly vicious sea state had been kicked up by the northnorthwesterly breeze that built steadily until it was gusting to 25 knots. The RC44 Cascais Cup is the fourth event of the 2016 Championship Tour, which pitts the world's top businessmen and the best sailors in the industry compete in high performance one-design 44-foot carbon racing yachts. Alors que seulement six semaines séparent les solitaires du coup d’envoi du Vendée Globe, la pression monte chez tous les candidats au tour du monde. Le Défi Azimut est donc le meilleur moyen pour patienter en restant concentré sur l’objectif. Face à 11 de ses concurrents, Vincent a pris un départ prudent hier en fin d’après-midi. Pas question de prendre le moindre risque pour le matériel comme l’avait expliqué le skipper le matin même. La suite s’est déroulée au contact lors du triangle dessiné par les monocoques dans l’ouest sud ouest de Groix. Décalé dans le sud du leader Banque Populaire à l’approche de la première marque, Vincent a ensuite enchainé les manœuvres comme ses concurrents dans un vent de face soutenu pour rejoindre la deuxième bouée avant de glisser pour le retour vers Lorient à bonne allure. Une confrontation intense et riche d’enseignements même si, le skipper de PRB n’a finalement coupé la ligne d’arrivée qu’en 5ème position à 12h27’58’’ aujourd’hui. « Je suis content de cette navigation. Tout s’est bien passé. Nous n’avons eu aucun problème technique. Par contre, nous n’avons pas tiré le bon bord de près cette nuit. On n’était pas dans le bon wagon. On ne peut pas gagner à tous les coups. Mais tout cela s’est déroulé dans de bonnes conditions puisque nous avons eu entre 8 et 20 nœuds de vent. Nous avons navigué au contact. C’était une belle opportunité de se confronter avant le Vendée Globe » raconte Vincent avant de rejoindre le ponton de la base des sous-marins de Lorient. Banque Populaire (Armel Le Cleac’h) remporte ces 24H Azimut avec une avance de 20 minutes sur un autre monocoque équipé de foils, Safran (Morgan Lagravière). Wir waren frühzeitig in Warnemünde gestartet und sind bei Leichtwind schlussendlich bei Darßer Orth West in die Flaute gedümpelt. Bei beginnender Dämmerung wollten wir nicht 25 sm durch die Nacht motoren, deshalb sind wir hier rein. Sicher kein Notfall, akzeptabel aber allemal. The trade winds had more south in them than we'd anticipated, so for most of the passage we close-reached, sailing 55 to 75 degrees off the wind in 18 to 30 knots. This meant we spent most of our time heeled over hard, all the while bashing into 2- to 3-meter seas that were very close together. Some moments were challenging; others humorous (mostly because we both felt a bit delirious at times); and some were beautiful and raw. Fourteen days and 4 hours after we departed Galápagos, we dropped our hook in Anakena anchorage on the northern coast of Rapa Nui, one of the most remote inhabited islands on earth.
