After working eight months in Colorado to save up for boat repairs and gear, we returned to the boat only to find flood damage from Hurricane Irma. There's oil everywhere and it looks like water is in the engine! Oh no! Not what we were hoping for upon return but watch to find out what happens.

A pleasant light-air weekend sail in Lake Superior's Apostle Islands, visiting Stockton and Michigan Islands. We expected trouble with our dinghy motor, and predictably had to row for a while until we got a tow back to the National Park Service's harbor in Presque Isle Bay. After leaving Nassau we decided to spend a few days anchored at Rose Island before crossing the yellow bank to the Exumas. At this point of our trip we stayed on the South side of the Island. It was well protected and turned out to be a great place to stay while waiting for the wind to die down, but we found that the snorkeling was mediocre and there weren't any fun beaches to relax on. Later on our trip, we found that the North side of the Island has fantastic beaches and numerous reefs to explore, along with plenty of places to anchor. Before leaving on our trip Randall did a ton of research trying to find shelf stable foods that we could take with us on our trip. One of the products he found was Yoder's Bacon. In this video we tried the bacon for the first time and found that we really like it! We were surprised at how much bacon fit into the small can. We had lots of fun staying at Rose Island and are now looking forward to crossing the Yellow Bank to the Exumas! When my surveyor friend Keith Willis featured the Carbon Delta 88 yacht on his Instagram page I was intrigued. | Season 2 | Episode 19 | Forney Cove Anchorage to Cueva Valdez Anchorage, Santa Cruz Island of the Channel Islands of California. The last week of 2017 I took an amazing solo sailing trip to the Channel Islands. I visit six anchorages on Santa Cruz Island before sailing for Catalina Island and tying up in Isthmus Cove for New Years Eve. We sailed back on New Years Day enjoying sunshine, great wind and thousands of dolphins. Forney Cove was very protected and gave me a great nights sleep. When I motored out of the anchorage the wind was fresh in the Santa Rosa Channel so I hoisted the headsail and was soon sailing! The swells were big and showed me just how protected Forney’s Cove is. I had a perfect day sailing down the North side of Santa Cruz Island all the way to Cueva Valdez. As I motored in to drop the hook I could see two baby dolphins playing in shallows and soon an adult Risso’s Dolphin surfaced next to me to check me out. My first ever sighting of a Risso’s Dolphin! I had intended on anchoring at Ladys Harbor but Fagen’s book said you needed a stern anchor for sure due to the limited space to swing so I opted to anchor at Cueva Valdez and explore its sea caves. While I was on my trip I started my first podcast and the first episode is up online now. The podcast is titled “A STERN VIEW” and is something of a cruising guide to anchorages and sailing destinations. Each episode is recorded on location and I cover everything I know about the anchorage from my research and experience at the anchorage. I also kept a journal in my logbook and will be posting them as a blog with still photos. This will act as support to the A STERN VIEW podcast as will each new video episode that features the anchorage covered in the podcast episodes. A 22-knot SSE wind provided fantastic conditions for the flying 18ft Skiffs today when the Australian 18 Footers League conducted Races 5 and 6 of the Auustralian Championship on Sydney Harbour. Once again, the two races produced two different winners and the overall scores suggest that we are in for a great finish in the final four races.

We crossed the Cook strait & stayed in small bays around Marlborough Sounds for three nights. Now it was time for our next challenge, The French Pass! We waited out an afternoon of bad weather at a bay beside the French Pass entrance: Catherine Cove. This was where we met the yacht Nephalle, a 40ft 18 tonne Sailboat. As Nephalle could average at around 8 knots and our average speed was only 5.5 knots, she offered to tow us through to get us across this piece of water quicker. Safety Briefings are really important on boats. Here's how to make a great one. First, understand that most people have a limited attention span with safety briefings. The world's best safety briefing is for naught if nobody is listening. With that in mind we recommend a three-minute, three-item general safety briefing for everyone. Then find out one or two people who are particularly interested and take them through an extended safety briefing.
