Plastic Pollution is the buildup of plastic products in the environment that adversely affects wildlife, humans and their habitats. Lefkas (Lefkada) is an amazing island on the west coast of Greece. We lived here on our boat surrounded by wetlands and salt flats. Without a car we walked and cycled everywhere and discovered the huge amount of wildlife that lives here such as swans, flamingos, egrets, ducks as well as turtles, butterflies and amphibians. Sadly, we also found a lot of rubbish including plastic bottles, bags and even fly tipping sites which were polluting this special environment. People were actually driving into the wetlands and offloading their rubbish rather than taking it to the dump. In the marina some liveaboards organised their own recycling scheme - cans and plastic bottles were being collected in the community room then taken on fold up bikes to a recycling project every week. This project is called LefkoGaia - a recycle co-operative project overseen by Thomas who recycles everything form electrics, metals and cooking oil to plastic, card and glass. The project struggles by on donations and by reselling recyclable materials. Used boat and car batteries are particularly welcome because of their high value lead content. Some liveaoards - such as Andrew Waterman - even volunteer their time to help sort and package the recyclable materials. The project has only one old van which is used to pick up large white goods such as televisions and refrigerators. They also get by on only two lights until they can fund their own electric supply. We joined a beach cleanup organised by some liveaboards - at a local turtle beach near Lefkas - and although the problem of ocean plastic pollution seems overwhelming at times, we met many people who are determined to make a change. Organising local beach cleanups or just picking up three pieces of plastic every time you're out for a walk can make a difference and inspire others. We've sailed away from Greece now but hopefully left the it slightly better than when we found it. On our travels we've modified the old aphorism of, "leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photos" to, "leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photos.. and a few bits of plastic!" I used to love 'Where the Sidewalk Ends' by Shel Silverstein when I was a child for all its wonder and absurdity and pure fun. And what a question...what lies beyond the end of the sidewalk, or road, or horizon. What lies beyond? I suppose I can answer that with one word. Svalbard. This land is unlike anything that we have encountered on our travels, both for it's untamed spirit and its fragility. It is a challenging place on the top of the world that demands much, but also rewards greatly. A punishing day at sea, with winds that whip your breath away with a gasp, is rewarded later with the most spectacular glacier that seems to change colour before your eyes. We've just made it from the Bahamas to St. Barth's, and we're ready to enjoy ourselves! We've been placed on an island with perfect beaches, perfect waters, and breathtaking views. After stumbling around town our first morning, still suffering from sleep deprivation, we instantly fall in love with St. Barth's and its main harbour of Gustavia. There are beaches full of shells, brilliant turquoise waters, and panoramic views from up on the hillsides. Being such a popular harbour, we were pushed to the back where we ended up anchored on a bed of rocks, but luckily the forecast was for very light winds and we were not worried about dragging. In this episode, Chris sails the boat to Tonga with an international crew of five swabbies! We have a great sail as far as offshore passages go. The wind even works out for us to have a two day stop over in complete calm at Minerva Reef. We get the biggest Yellow Tail Tuna I've ever seen on the line and I spear the biggest fish I've ever caught on a spear. To top it all off a massive fourteen foot Tigershark paid us an afternoon visit and decided to do a taste test of our prop! Passage making is not always this fun, but when it's good it's really good! :) The core of "Family Circus" is Chris (Dad / Captain), Sayo (Mom / Admiral), Aya (First Officer / Deckhand) and Miya (Baby / Stainless Polisher). After many years in business in Vancouver we were tired of life inside the box and wanted to make a change, we just weren't exactly sure what would be next. In July of 2016, when Sayo was six months pregnant, we decided (somewhat at the last minute) to fly to New Caledonia for one last holiday before the baby was born. Aktuell ist das Angebot hier sogar weltweit am dichtesten. Und nicht nur das – auch die Qualität der Schiffe und die Arbeit der einzelnen Vercharterer ist auf einem sehr hohen Niveau. Das Gebiet zwischen Zadar und Primosten, beherbergt die wohl bekannteste Inselgruppe des Landes – Die Kornaten. Man sagt, dass man sich hier für jeden einzelnen Tag im Jahr eine neue Insel aussuchen kann. Genaugenommen zählen laut Wikipedia zwar „nur“ 125 bis 152 Inseln zu der Gruppe, aber auch das ist sicherlich weit mehr als die meisten in einem Jahr besuchen können. Ihren Namen verdanken die Kornaten der Insel „Kornat“, welche die größte der Inseln bildet. Seglerisch bietet das Revier natürlich eine unglaubliche Vielfalt mit zahlreichen Buchten und Bojenfeldern. Aber auch Marinas wie zum Beispiel die ACI Marina Zut oder die ACI Marina Piskera sind hier schöne Anlaufplätze auf einer Yachtcharter durch die Kornaten. Erst im Juli 2017 haben wir selbst einen Törn ab Biograd gemacht. Die Inseln der Kornaten bieten, wie bereits geschrieben, traumhaft schöne Buchten und Anlieger. Aufgrund der Tatsache, dass es hier verschiedene Naturschutzgebiete, wie zum Beispiel den Kornati Nationalpark oder den Telascica Naturpark gibt, fallen hier Kosten an, sobald man an einer Boje festmacht. Offen gesagt sind die Inseln recht karg und teilweise auch wirklich klein, aber ein Landausflug auf den einen oder anderen Hügel des Eilandes, belohnt mit einer atemberaubenden Aussicht, die man sich auf keinen Fall entgehen lassen sollte. Auch andere hotspots, wie zum Beispiel der Salzsee auf Dugi Otok gehören definitiv zu einem Pflichtbesuch, wenn man einen Törn in den Kornaten bucht. Check out Cayla's year leading up to her 12th birthday. It was a challenging year with lots of new concepts in her life. It started with her trip to Australia to meet her Great-Grandparents for the first time. She got to feed a kangaroo. She also started her first year of homeschool, played Ukulele, Violin, Clarinet. She picked up Aerial Silks and had lots of ice cream. It was also her first time to have a cast after falling off her scooter in the back yard. It ended with her 12th birthday at Balboa Peninsula with a fun beach cook out. We are proud of her for all the hard work, especially assisting her special needs brothers as a "special needs sibling" and helping to take care of her little sister. We love you Cayla. In this video I am back in Scandinavia. I attend a Helicopter crash dive training program which is needed to be able to fly to work when you are working offshore in the oil industry of Norway. I go back to Malmö to meet Fia again. She had just moved in to a new apartment and I volunteered to help her buy furniture at Ikea as she doesn't have a car. Then I helped mounting them. Another much needed re-visit was with the Naprapat Pia at Bellevue Naprapatklinink. I used to see her once every 3 weeks when I lived in Sweden as I have had much pain in my neck and shoulders. In this episode, we prepare for our Atlantic Crossing by doing a rigging inspection up the mast! It's very important to make sure everything is in good order before embarking on such a serious journey. While Herby is the one that needs to go up, Frank and Maddie take advantage of the opportunity as well to get a beautiful view of their Bahamian surroundings. We then sail to Compass Cay as a trial run for Frank, but it ends up being quite windless, so we are forced to motor. As we continue cruising north in the Exumas we stop at some of the local underwater sights to do some finless (because we forgot them) snorkeling. We saw the well known Seaquarium and a sunken plan before moving north to the heart of the Exumas Land and Sea Park at Warderick Wells. It's a neat spot to stop but Arya couldn't really go to land do to a protected mammal that lives there.
