To start with following two days of intense competition on the Sea of Marmara, the 24th Bosphorus Cup concluded with the race on the Bosphorus Strait. The busy waterway is closed once a year to allow this impressive contest to take place, and as usual a sumptuous spectacle was laid on for both competitors and spectators. Racing in a 15 knot northerly winds, and starting from Kuruçeşme, the 55 boat fleet contested a looped course that went as far north as Anadolu Hiasari, and the impressive F S M Bridge, and south to Beşiktaş, with the finish line near Beşiktaş. Hugo Cardon on his Figaro 3, Sarth'Atlantique, won the second leg of La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec. This young rookie managed to cover the distance in 4 days 2 hours 14 minutes and 29 seconds. He is ahead of Alexis Loison in Groupe Reel, winner of the first leg, and the formidable Charlotte Yven, on Skipper Macif 2023. In the provisional general classification, Alexis Loison strengthens his lead before the third and final leg. The Ocean Race Europe 2025, came to a spectacular close in Montenegro’s Boka Bay with a dramatic coastal showdown that saw French, Paul Me-hat’s Biotherm put the icing on the cake and win again in the final coastal race in style. Team Paprec Arkéa, crossed in second to secure the overall runner-up spot on 40 points, with skipper Yoann Richomme praising his team’s consistency throughout the six-week race. With summery sunshine warming the dock at Lorient La Base, the skippers, exhausted by the two-day frenzy of manoeuvres, congratulated themselves on the diversity of the course in this 48H Azimut. "Fun", "intense", "fantastic", "tortuous", "demanding"... there was certainly no shortage of adjectives to describe the 48 H and its 'Figaro leg' vibes. Tougher than ever, this 14th Défi Azimut-Lorient Agglomération required the skippers to dig incredibly deep to hold rank. After a much needed stopover in Puerto Sherry, the Clipper Race fleet is back at sea! The teams set off on the YCPE Cup, to Punta del Este 🇺🇾. This stage brings the second half of the Atlantic Trade Winds - a test of tactics, patience, and teamwork. From navigating the Canaries to the unpredictable doldrums near the equator, crews will face wind holes, squalls, and soaring heat. Crossing the equator will be a huge milestone, marked by the legendary King Neptune ceremony - a rite of passage for every sailor. Four days of close racing in Scarlino brought the Swan Tuscany Challenge to a spectacular conclusion. Nicolas Manthos sitzt für dieses Interview schon in England und bereitet sich mit seiner Class 40 auf das Rolex Fastnet Race vor – eine Jubiläumsausgabe und sein erstes Fastnet. Das Boot liegt in East Cowes, der Kurs und die letzten Checks laufen. Sein Weg ins Segeln begann erst während Corona: Ein Dachbodenfund – Wilfried Erdmanns „Allein gegen den Wind“ – zündete den Funken. Kurz darauf kaufte er eine Hurley 18 (Langkieler, Baujahr 1970) und startete alleine via Sizilien, Sardinien, Spanien bis Gibraltar. Von Lanzarote segelte er in ~29 Tagen nach Antigua – „perfekte Passatwinde, fast nichts kaputt“ – und brachte das Boot später aus purer Sehnsucht wieder nach Europa zurück. Heute segelt Nicolas eine Class 40 (2007, „Cheeky Tattoo“) – ein frühes, kompromisslos sportliches Design mit minimalem Komfort. 2024 setzte er bei der Round-Iceland-Challenge eine Referenzzeit single-handed: geplanter „Zwei-Wochen-Traum“, am Ende 16 Tage – nach harter Am-Wind-Passage mit Böen über 50 Knoten, später traumhaften Bedingungen entlang Islands Südküste und schließlich zwei Downwind-Tagen mit ~11 Knoten Schnitt zurück Richtung Irland. Angst gilt dem Material, nicht dem Wetter: Die größten Kräfte wirken auf Rumpf und Rigg – Seamanship bedeutet für ihn, so vorzubereiten, dass Ausfälle möglichst selten werden. Prägend ist auch ein schwerer Slackline-Unfall (2015), bei dem Nicolas sein linkes Auge verlor. Statt ihn zu bremsen, schärfte das Erlebnis seinen Fokus: Träume nicht aufschieben, Verantwortung übernehmen, Risiken bewusst managen. Das große Ziel: Worldstar 2026 – solo, nonstop um die Welt. Start in Plymouth, dann Atlantik südwärts über den Äquator, hinein ins Südpolarmeer, unter Kap der Guten Hoffnung, durch den Indischen Ozean, südlich an Neuseeland vorbei, durch den Südpazifik und unter Kap Hoorn zurück in den Atlantik – alle drei großen Kaps an Backbord lassen. Inhaltlich nahe an der Vendée Globe, aber mit deutlich kleinerem Budget und Team – dafür ebenso erzählbar „in Echtzeit“ dank Bord-Connectivity. This week, join us as we discover the excitement to be found in the hills of Medellin, Colombia! That's right, we're in South America and we have stumbled across the most painful insect known to man. The tarantula hawk wasp has the most painful sting in the animal kingdom, scoring a whopping four points on the Schmidt Pain Index! What we don't mention in this week's travel blog is how we stumbled upon this terrifying insect. It's too good of a story to pass up, so I'll fill you in now! Picture this: the two of us out in the forests of Santa Elena, Medellin. High in the foothills of the Andes at 2500 meters/8400 feet. So not only are we jet lagged from our flight across the Atlantic, but also a bit head achy and short of breath from the altitude. Sea level to cloud forest is quite the shock! But despite our tired bodies asking us for a nap, we decided to push through our sluggish states and stretch our legs to see what the eucalyptus forest had to offer us. A few miles in, a metallic blue insect with red wings caught our eye. We had no idea what this was, and no cell service to inquire, so we did what any curious hiker might do and tried to get closer to our curious specimen. Perhaps we could scoop it up on a stray leaf or fallen branch and have a good inspection. Lucky for us, this South American insect is not interested in eating gringos for lunch, and only has it's sights set on huge venomous spiders. The blasted things kept flying away from us! And in our naivety, we kept running closer. And closer. And closer. Chasing them around like a toddler at their first soccer game who's just spotted a colorful butterfly. By the time we got home, we'd nearly forgotten about the thing, and it would probably have been better if we did! Now every time we go out walking into the thick cloud forests of Medellin, we're hyper aware of these little guys. And as is the case with nearly all insects, they couldn't care less about us. They're not aggressive, and do everything in their little bug bodied power to avoid us big stomping humans. Funnily enough, a few days later we went out hiking with some locals, and as we passed by an area that was particularly inundated with what we now knew to be * The Most Painful Insect In the World * , we pointed them out and told them what we had learned, and they were completely shocked to hear that these lovely blue wasps had such a terrifying reputation, and also completely unconcerned. They'd been living their whole lives in the foothills of the Andes and had never once heard of anyone being stung by these beautiful creatures. So now you know for when you too decide to travel to Colombia! Yes these guys have a scary reputation, but if you don't bother them, they won't bother you! Or as you see in this video.. even if you bother them, they still won't bother you! I'm not sure what you need to do to get stung by one of these, but we're not interested in finding out. The Andes mountains have so much to offer us, and Medellin is just our first stop as we make our way around Colombia.
