We visited the Maratua Atoll in the early days of October 2018 for almost two weeks and spend time at the Nunukan Island Resort and the Nabucco Island Resort. One each island we had five days of diving including trips to Kakaban (Jellyfish Lake) and Sangalaki, were we had no Mantas unfortunately. But overall we had some great dives with sometimes strong current, especially at the Big Fish Country near the Nabucco Island. But we got rewarded with hundreds of Barracudas, Hammerhead and Grey Reef Sharks. Both resorts were very nice and the stuff was always polite and helpful with every problem. We return to treating our barrier coat blisters with epoxy and fairing compound and then give the bottom another thorough wet sand in preparation for painting. After having antifouling paints fail before the one year mark, this year I will put three coats (instead of two) of ablative paint on, with the first coat a different color. The theory here is that the paint is wearing away with all the miles, so by using a different color for the first coat I can gauge how quickly the paint is wearing away. It's time to get back to work on our dodger, now we're laying the tracks on the cabin house and cockpit combing for the bolt rope to slide into. First though, we take a little time to appreciate Antigua after our busy schedule and go for a hike on the Goat Trail next to English Harbour. Passing through the old fort, it is full of history, spectacular views, and you guessed it...goats. When we do get back to work it's time to lay the tracks on our cabin top and adhere it directly to the deck. Finding the the proper line for the track to follow is half the task though. Once we do get it figure out, as well as the curve we want the track to take on the cabin top, it's time to secure it down with West System G-Flex. Bending the track to the proper curve, we weight it down overnight and in the morning are confident enough in the adhesion to continue the project. Otherwise, we just spend our time hanging out and enjoying our last few days in Antigua. One night while having a friend over for a beer we go on a runaway dinghy chase and end up having sundowners on the beach. Our last night in Antigua is spent with s/v Calico Skies and s/v Jabberwocky, trying to find some good and cheap eats at a local joint, after a crazy cab ride with our driver Bling. Kath's Mum (Jube) tells us about her Atlantic Ocean crossing in the 80s with Dame Naomi and Robert James. A 3,200 nautical mile passage they completed in a 53ft sailing yacht, from Newport Rhode Island to Cowes. Last Thursday three of us went to Panama City, Florida to help out a friends family. The devastation is insane! We were only able to help out one house with trees on it. There is SO much to do. We hope we will be going back in a few weeks to help a local church in the area. The amount of help in this city alone is overwhelming! We got no bow thruster! Really hard to maneuver these big Amels without it. So, we're going to replace the propeller by taking the bow thruster out of the boat while the boat's still in the water. Good luck! This repair was part of the repairs we did in Ginesta, Spain before heading across the Mediterranean.

My favorite parts of having a Youtube channel are 1: YOU guys, who follow our little sailing adventure and the magic that occurs when we get to meet, and 2: Getting to experience something new as a result of those meetings. When we met one of this channel’s subscribers and now friend, Duarte, we got inspired to catch and cook an octopus in Culatra, Portugal. There were a few challenges associated with this endeavor of ours. For one, neither Ryan or I fish, let alone octopuses. Also, the idea of fishing makes me slightly queasy. Still, I was determined to get out of my comfort zone to catch this octopus. First, we had to get equipment to make this octopus fishing operation a success. We were helped by our friend Ricardo from Sopromar and Joao from the local fishing store in Lagos, who assisted us in getting the right fishing equipment. Once that task completed, we left Lagos and headed to Culatra via Portimão and the famous Benagil caves, where we made a touristic escapade. Well arrived in Culatra, we met with Jonna, from Sailing Tangaroa, who joined us in this octopus catch and cook adventure, and after weeks of anticipation, finally got to drop the line and hook in the water and try our luck.
