Une première pour nous... Courte halte puisque le lendemain nous partons pour Belle Ile. Mais en chemin nous croisons nos premiers dauphins du séjour (de loin).

October sailing with our Bavaria 32 Cruiser, starting with only 3 bft, but soon up to 5 and 6, with peaks of 7 Bft. We've reefed from the start, since predictions were 5 to 6. So not enough sail at start, but that soon changed. A nice wind, but fairly cold. 6 degrees celsius, but chillfactor .... My wife and I enjoyed the trip on the Veerse Meer in the Netherlands.

With every long passage we learn a stack more, about ourselves, about each other, about life at sea, and first and foremost, about Little Miss Avalon. This time we learnt that motor sailing on a starboard tack is a sucky move. Oh, and that our hand pump (fuel) doesn't work. As perverse as it may seem; this was by far one of our best weeks on Finding Avalon. I mean, there really is no room for boredom when you've got wind on the beam, dolphins and a bit of problem solving. Exciting ride NW wind 20-25 kt gusting 30 for the first 2/3 of the passage; Easy motor-sailing at the end.

We said goodbye to Sardinia and Corsica and set passage for the beautiful Baleric islands off the coast of Spain. We had a great time exploring these incredible islands, we saw so many dolphins, our first pilot whales and the kids had their first scuba dive with us in the amazing national park of the Cabrera islands just south of Mallorca. We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau. We are a family of 5. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand. We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures! After sailing from BVI, we arrive in Saba, a dormant volcano rising out of the Caribbean Sea a whopping 2910 feet. We discover that a tropical depression is heading our way so try to cram in as much as possible before we need to run... checking out the two main towns then starting a seriously STEEP ascent from sea level to the peak of Mount Scenery. Leave family and friends. March 2008. We got the news. Ashley’s father had stage 4 cancer. Terminal. Life expectancy between 4 to 6 months. From having the perfect life, nearing retirement with 4 kids and loving wife to dead within 12 months at the young age of 52. It was a hard time. It was the biggest wakeup call of our life. We leave the island of Maupiti (the best place ever) and embark on our 1200nm crossing to Tonga. 20miles in we are struck with a bilge full of water! We go to turn around and are hailed by other cruisers in our vicinity who offer to fill us in the next atoll, Maupihaa (which has absolutely NO services), out of the goodness of their hearts. Thanks to the lovely people that we met and made our disaster into a new adventure. We will be forever grateful.
