Jetzt werden die Fenster im Boot installiert. Begleitet mich von der Vorbereitung bis hin zum Einbau der Fenster im Schiff. Als erstes wird die äußere Bordwand vorbereitet. Die alte Dichtungsmasse, Lack und Grundierung wird mit einem Fächerschleifer weggeflext, bis der blanke Stahl zu sehen ist. Dann kommt eine neue Rostschutzgrundierung darauf. Wenn getrocknet, werden die Schiffsfenster dann trocken eingesetzt und innen mit einem Stift die Innenmaße abgezeichnet und außen abgeklebt. Die innere Makierung dann im nächsten Schritt mit Malertape abkleben, die Schutzfolie außen entfernen und anschleifen. Dann wird die Scheibe mit Aktivator vorbehandelt und dann mit Acryl-Primer eingepinselt. Ordentlich Dichtungsmasse drauf und das Fenster kann eingesetzt werden und die Schrauben festgezogen werden. Danach Fugen glattziehen und das äußere Malertape entfernen. Obacht! Es kann eine ganz schöne Sauerei werden, von daher auch innen im Schiff alles gut ankleben. 5 Fenster sind jetzt schon drin! This week we make some small odd shaped backing spacers that allow a solid through hull bolting of the stanchion bases where they hit the molded curves of the hull lines. We used Epoxy, Modeling clay, Blue Painters tape and some washers to make the correct shape. We also get a lot of little things done. I added two weatherproof switches to go on the side of the helm station to light up the mizzen spreader lights and also the spare anchor light. We also wired the compass light into the dash lights, but as I type this I can see why we may want to put that on a separate switch so that we can turn off the engine gauges when we are sailing. Dangit, I am annoyed with myself for just thinking of this. We also installed the VHF antenna and the Standard Horizon GX2100 AIS, VHF receiver and transmitter. Além das tartarugas nadando com nosso bote. Depois do dia de sol, o tempo fechou e pegamos rajadas de 30 nós de sudoeste, o que fez 2 barcos garrarem e uma noite cheia de emoção.

Our ship has been swinging to her anchor in the Hampton River (Virginia) for over a month now while I search for a weather window to set off for the Virgin Islands. We are in an active and persistent weather pattern of cold fronts exiting the US East coast but then stalling and lifting back north as warm fronts. Hence leaving on the northwesterlies behind the front will mean passing through a potentially nasty frontal boundary, and then encountering contrary, southerly winds on the other side. s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) left Sag Harbor on the south fork of eastern Long Island, heading for Greenport on the north fork. On the way we stop in West Neck, Shelter Island, where we run aground as we entered the lagoon. Luckily the tide was rising but not fast enough to avoid several interested onlookers including 2 police boats who decided to interrogate us right when we didn’t need that! After flying the drone over the spectacular views of Shelter Island we departed West Neck and headed to Greenport via what we chose to call the Motor Boat Highway. At Greenport we met Dennis and Cathy on their HR 36, Endeavor. They had been following us on social media and heard when we called on VHF. Greenport was a very pleasant down-to-earth town after the obvious exuberance of the Hamptons. A lovely place to visit on a late summer’s afternoon. Finally, a tranquil anchorage in Orient Bay before we headed for shelter as the remnants of Hurricane Florence greets us the next days. 16-17 September 2018

We sail from the Caribbean island of Saba in the Lesser Antilles in an effort to out run Hurricane Isaac. Our sails our set for Carriacou in Grenada being the first island outside of the hurricane belt. However as with ALL sailing journeys, the wind rarely does what you want so with four days to go we hit the hyperdrive button and belt it south. The fishing from the boat is the only thing keeping us going though as we catch three fish on our way! Before my first open ocean passage, I didn't know what to expect. Most sailing videos don't show what it's really like sailing the open ocean. I hope this video does a better job of that. A unique new sailing yacht is under construction, to a new design by Hoek Design Naval Architects. The aluminium-hulled yacht has been developed for a European owner as a long-distance cruising yacht that is easy to handle, fast and comfortable for cruising. The aluminium hull was chosen for its strength-to-weight ratio, but more importantly, for its ability to withstand impact loads in case of collision with floating objects. A ketch rig was chosen for its versatility and ease of sail handling but also for its good downwind sailing characteristics with extra sails like Code 0, A-symmetric spinnakers and mizzen staysails. We organized a Beach Cleaning Day with all the employees of North Sails. A joint effort to participate to an event to help protect environment. Both team from North Sails Collection and North Sails Sailing cleaned the beach of Chiavari (Italy). With high enthusiasm and big garbage bags, they set out to get their hands dirty. For the sake of convenience and fun, the whole team was divided into 8 groups. Each team took up a specific portion on the beach and everyone was determined. Once the plastic pieces picked up, each member of the team had to classify them and sort them as per type of rubbish. You won’t believe some of the things they found: from plastic bags to plastic bottles, plastic dishes, cigarette butts, toys, fishing tools and many more… In total, 5382 pieces of plastics were found, 274 plastic dishes, 582 plastic bags, 3015 cigarette butts… All of these in only 1 hour and with the help of 78 people!! Just to make things a little bit funnier, we created a game between the groups, the purpose of it was to find as many pieces as possible of plastics on each beach. The winning group found 1063 pieces of plastics!! The North Sails team was fully satisfied with their amazing job! Well done everyone for this great team building! Keep our planet clean. The keel, rudder and the saildrive looks fine but the bottom of the boat looks a bit moldy, maybe because it was raining when I applied the last coat of antifouling. I also fix the rest of the winter preparations and get ready for the entrance hatch replacement done by the Bavaria dealer here in Denmark.
